If clean sheets win you titles, why aren't Burnley top?

    My initial point still stands.

Burnley have an amazing defensive record and in so have kept 30 clean sheets. But they are still not top. Leeds are top by way of goal difference. So even by only conceding 15 goals all season Burnley might still not be Champions. Leeds have let on almost double the amount that Burnley have.....but have scored far more goals than they have conceded.

Ergo.  Clean sheets by themselves do not win you titles.
You don’t have to score the most goals or concede the fewest to win the league. It’s a daft thing to be obsessed about. But you cannot lose if you don’t concede.
And you cannot win if you don't score.

    15 all.

this debate is daft - golfie was right - he made the point that our defence was good at the start of the season but the lack of goals was a big problem - others seemed to think we could grind our way to success but it wasn't until we sorted the attack out, that we turned the corner - a good defence will only get u so far but is generally considered to be the starting point to build from and so it has proved this year

    Yeah......nuff said.

I take all the brick bats that are thrown at me but I was right. Clean sheets dont win you titles.

Clean sheets & scoring goals do.
Was that really what you were saying all along? Really?
Well its obvious you have to do both, but I started the thread when Burnley had just kept 12 clean sheets in a row..........but I think a few of those games ended 0-0. Imagine if a few of those 0-0's ended 2-1. They wouldn't have set a record but they would have won the title.
Or, turning one of their two 1-0 defeats into a 0-0 would have also won then the title, along with an even more impressive clean sheet record.

At least with dirty sheets they can only get dirtier but clean sheets need washing all the time to keep then clean and this contributes to global warming, chemical saturation in the water and soil and ruins planets.

i'd rather rely on huge amounts of goals scored than keeping perpetually clean sheets, you know it makes sense.

Golfie said Burnley wouldn’t get automatically promoted in his first post. He was wrong.

Yeah, since know it all has been slagging Charlton for their rubbish sound defence tactics and then criticised Burnley as well, both teams have been promoted.

We've gone from mid table in L1 to 7th in The Championship.
That Nathan Jones should start listening to what Golfie says  :D

And have conceded the joint fewest number of goals. It is early days but we knew we had a strong team defensively. I get the impression the rest of the teams haven't worked it out yet. I told my Bristol City mate before we played them how good our defence was so it is becoming apparent just now.

That’s an incredible stat, clean sheets in over 50% of home games.

Chat GPT is very clever but really struggled with the strapline "Keeps Your Sheets Cleaner than Clean", but you get the idea.

Must be Goals Conceded... In order of most to least

Although not sure what qualifies us to be bottom

    Yes, shoulldn't we be top?
  • Simply on the topic, rather than the original post

But that's five clean sheets for the season now, matches the same amount this time last season

Only three teams (Coventry, Middlesbrough and Stoke) have better defensive records than us, whilst we're suddenly climbing the scoring charts, having scored more goals than 14-other teams in the Division.
  • Six clean sheets in 14-games no... Only Stoke have a better defensive record than us now, but only two goals difference.

For the record, it took us 16-games to get the same amount of clean sheets this time last year

I wasn't too sure how long it would take us to reach 6 clean sheets this season, never in wild dreams did I think it would be after only 14 games. Superb job from entire team.
