  • If it gives us a few billion then sure, or a few hundred mill, or tens of millions, but it won't.

That's my view on it, just another cheapskate move. Surprised it hasn't happened sooner tbh

    I make you right.

I reckon Charlie is so desperate to reduce our losses/his salary he'll take Wilko renaming us.
  • Maybe Robert Downey Jnr could be contacted. I understand he is setting up a range of new products. Happy, a brand on a mission to help consumers rediscover the magic of every day.

His first venture is coffee but 'The Happy Valley', what could go wrong?

I am sure the Trust will listen and nod their heads.

Don’t be ridiculous, clearly no fan wants The Valley totally rebranded/renamed

    But

fans also want better players, promotions and success- which comes at a cost.
consultation is really the only way fans are going to get what they want- or at least have a few small victories

Surely you’d ask for their council before announcing naming rights are up for grabs.
It’s all for show, the decision has been made.
  • I don't like sponsored grounds or stands, BUT worth noting that it's very common nowadays.

Next week we will be sitting in the GiPrint East Stand at Gaughan Group Stadium, while the following week it will be the Vitality Railway End at Stockport.
  • How much is the yearly cost of rent?
Pretty good idea to generate a multi year revenue stream from an asset we don’t own, to at least cover the costs of its usage.

This would be a fraction of the rent, never mind the operating cost. It won’t even pay Charlie’s salary.
How much is the rent per year?
The Valley was £500k in 2020 under the lease variation signed by Sandgaard. There is quite a complicated rent review procedure which will increase that, but the total rent liability of the club in 2023/24 was a bit shy of £600k. This will include Sparrows Lane.
Best case scenario, we’re looking at no more than 60% of the rental liability based on 23/24 figures.
  • The design on that site produced actual visual discomfort for me. I was really interested to read about was on there but couldn't stay on the site. Genuinely disturbed my vision. I still feel unsettled now. I am not even joking. Weird. Some kind of visual white noise that would make me spill my secrets in no time if interrogated.
The drone footage by the naming rights section was excellent (imho).  Some great views that you don't normally see

Not sure that is likely ! 😉😆
  • Never really seen the problem with a stadium sponsor tbh. Whatever it would be everyone would still call it The Valley. No one called St. James Park The Sports Direct Arena

F***** me there! I think his salary needed to be taken from the post!
  • Im sure those so against a name change that no one will use are happy to help make up the financial short fall?

We lose millions a year, the revenue is much needed.
Successful team will bring more money in than whatever comes from renaming.

Do well to find someone stupid enough* to pay for naming rights but the name won’t change from the valley.
*Don't give  Simon Jordan any ideas.
  • In all honesty I'd prefer saying goodbye to the Valley, building a new ground (and selling the naming rights to that). Highbury, Goodison Park, White Hart Lane - these are names that lived on in the memory. I see the Valley the same and would prefer to move grounds than have it renamed.

  • Anybody any idea what somebody like Bolton get from their stadium sponsor?

But less than a successful team and sponsorship income combined
  • The above may or may not be complete bollocks  :D
  • My take on it all.

A lot of grounds that have had "naming rights" have been clubs that have moved to new, bigger & brighter stadiums......esp higher up. Arsenal, Man City, Leicester, West Ham, Brighton etc. Those are easy wins for the clubs as they are moving to new grounds that don't have a name yet. Obviously further down the pyramid you've got the Tough Sheet stadium & the WHAM stadium (or whatever iis called) but most haven't changed their name. The thing is, people might say "it doesn't matter, it'll always be The Valley to me" but it's the media who get the name out there. Everytime there is a goal on a Saturday afternoon & SKY say....." and we are off to the Arthur Smith Community Stadium where Charlton have just taken the lead..." then thats another reminder to the public that The Valley is no more.

This is a good point.  But it might work if it was called something akin to: "The Arthur Smith Valley" - we know it's really called The Valley, everyone would still call it The Valley but there is also much needed revenue.  I agree though - if there is no 'Valley' in the name - it's a big No from me.

I suppose it's a bit similar to Twickenham being called the 'Allianz Twickenham Stadium'.  NO ONE seems to add in the Allianz bit apart from the official pages on social media.

Typically successful teams don’t come free of charge.

The cold reality is that the club have one of the higher budgets in the league, arguably some/lots of that money has not been spent well, but in order to maintain that level of expenditure we are incurring enormous debt every season. In those circumstances any revenue stream should be explored and if the business case makes sense we should do it. Of course because of the emotional investment in the name of the stadium we shouldn’t be flogging the naming rights cheaply, but if we’re able to get a good offer then I would seriously consider it.

As a related aside, I was at St Andrew’s on Saturday. Despite spending a couple of hours there I had no idea until I read this thread that the naming rights for St Andrews had been sold and it was now “St Andrews @ Knightshead Park”. Regardless of any rights deal, I don’t think anyone is going to actually refer to the stadium as anything other than the Valley.
  • I've been to rugby matches at Twickenham and cricket matches at The Oval. In no way is that sentence compromised by the fact that's not their names any more.  Earning revenue from a naming rights sale (or, more accurately a "rental", as they're rarely permanent) is a good thing, as long as the club remembers that no-one is going to use a name other than The Valley.

Until it's finalised, I am going to set up a Go Fund Me, to gather enough funds to get it renamed the Fuck Off Roland Valley.  Who's in?

*Yes however ,on a more serious note, I would set up a Go Fund Me to retain its title/ rename it Valley Floyd Road.

I wouldn't want that man's name anywhere near this club (we don't want to streisand affect that man hence making him synonyms with Charlton FC)
