I liked both The Shawshank Redemption and  Starred Up but my favourite is A Prophet, directed by Jacques Audiard. Oscar-nominated and winner of over 50 awards worldwide, it’s an intelligent and visceral film with real depth in its character development.

I still have never got round to seeing Shawshank Redemption!!

I've always enjoyed "Life" with Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence though
    Bonkers. Watch it. Great film.

A Prophet is brilliant and my favourite prison film too.

I'll also give mention to Slam starring Saul Williams.

    Some amazing movies already mentioned.
Although the acting at times is a bit embarrassing, Blood In, Blood Out has some great prison scenes.

If you can handle subtitles, this one is great. Very rough. The main guy was also in Borgen.

    Escape from Pretoria is fun
I came to say that, it's derivative of a bunch of prison movies but in a really good way.

    Escape from Alcatraz for me

Watched it a couple of years ago on BBC, one of those times when a film comes on late and you are doing something and think I will finish up then change channels(think I was wrapping presents or cleaning my hamster)

Anyway about 10/15 minutes into the movie and I was so caught up in it I never changed channel and watched the whole thing and it was definitely one of the best movies I have watched

Escape from Alcatraz. One of those films that always have to watch when it pops up (it's just arrived on Netflix which is good news).

Impossible not to mention Shawshank Redemption, as many have already. Seen it many times at home, but last month watched it at outdoor cinema, was fantastic to finally see it on the big screen.
