Disappointing Wrexham won, but we have to take care of our end and if that is not enough then so be it.

Three more points in the bag.

Horrible last few minutes I was convinced they were gonna nick one

All I care about is the 3 points, shame the other game didn’t finish 0-0 but I still believe (but obviously would need to beat both Wrexham and Wycombe away)

It’s now in the season that you start looking at silly points dropped here and there but our rather fortunate last minute point against Wrexham could still be quite important at the end of the season.
Every team has their what if's & maybe's. Points are always lost here & there and there is no point looking back as you can't change it. We are where we are & we can only look forward at the games to come. Another 5 or 6 wins and a couple of draws should see us in 3rd, 4th at worst. Might squeak 2nd but that will entail us dropping just a few points and beating both Wrexham & Wycombe away. To me it's just a stretch too far but far far better than last season when we were looking over our shoulder at 20th place.

It says a lot for our current form that I was absolutely gutted when we conceded a goal. We dominated that match from start to finish and I genuinely think that if TC and Matty hadn't missed that golden opportunity at the beginning of the second half, we would have run out winners by 4 or 5 goals. As it was, 2-1, 3 points, another step towards the Championship.

    The bad stuff
If Campbell had scored we wd have gone on to win at least 4-0 so the scoreline wasn't a true reflection of the game
And we should have had a pen
    The good stuff
11 players in red playing their hearts out. Campbell and Godden were brilliant and Watson came in and did a decent job..it was a great atmosphere at the Valley today with the sweet perfume of promotion playing on the senses of the Charlton faithful. In the words of mcfadden and whitehead "ain't no stopping us now "
  • When you think how one dimensional we were earlier in the season eh?

Now playing with a bit of style, a high press and ingenuity - a couple of gems from dead ball situations today - which admittedly - didn't quite come off, but really good to see us in there pitching and keeping the opposition guessing.

So when are the club going to start selling a match day special of a tray of chicken nuggets goujons and a bottle of Leffe for £8?

the attendance looked to me to be better than for a long time, and shout out for the coverd end, they were in good voice today.
Agreed. It was pretty loud in the AC Stand today, to be fair. A third goal at the start of the second half would have fuelled it even more.

I’m loving the wins but I’m slightly concerned about the hard work we’re making of some of it. We really should have put both Crawley and Wigan to the sword.

Take a win any way they come at this stage of the season. Played very well for the most part.
Godden showing what a great finisher he is again.
    Fortress Valley!

    2nd is within reach.
    UTA!

Been like it all season.  Can't score more than 2 goals in a game & soon that will bite us on the bum. I now expect us to make the play offs but we wont get 2nd.

But I dont want to detail this thread with negativity so I'll leave it to others to bask in another win.
You really are a glass one sixteenth empty kind of a guy, aren't you?

  • Had to hot foot it from Dorset to Bexleyheath this morning to attend to 94 year old Mum, just discharged from QE Hospital and a bit disorientated and confused.
Made it to the Valley at half time and saw us in comfort mode lose 0-1  ;)
Seriously, a dominant performance it appears.
    But we must learn ruthlessness.

No idea why the ref was booed off. One of the best this season. If TC  didn't try to con penalties then one day he may get one.

I hope others see what a player Berry is. He has a football brain just watch his positioning and passing. Let’s hope our young players especially Campbell and Small can get some of his football brain.
Completely agree with you. He seems to get a lot of stick but if you watch him his positional play is exceptional. Knows where the goal is too.

I think he’s been great this year. He doesn’t stand out all the time but is involved in a lot of the good things we do
Using the word great extremely loosely there. He has had some good games, some crap games and a lot of average games. For someone who played and scored in the premiership last season, I expected a lot more.

7th straight home win in a row, keep this up, and eventually we’ll turn into Liverpool!

Brain: Our lapse in professionalism in the second half meant a game that should have been a clean sheet, wasn’t.

Heart: oi oi autos here we come. Thierry Small doing a no look pass, drawing the foul then revving up the crowd - hang it in the Louvre.

First half was probably our best display of the season. Crowd getting bigger and the Covered End choir in great voice. Our winning run has got fans wearing their scarves - nice to see.

Agree about 1st half. Some great football and totally dominant. For me, CC was clearly mom (again) and someone gave him a 4 in the player marks. Oh well. We have a proper team now. Onwards and upwards. COYR.

A very decent performance but it was noticeable Wigan had more energy with five substitutions, we should have responded as we usually do with changes around 60 to 70 minutes. That we did not do so was why we had an anxious last ten, Berry for sure and maybe Campbell could have come off, very strange given our recent workload especially with some decent replacements available.

Hard to moan because the key thing is to just keep on winning and we did that. First half (and most of the second) was as one sided a stroll as we’ve seen for ages. However, although our goal difference is steadily improving (cos we keep on winning), we really should have given Wigan a pasting today. We utterly dominated but only really had half a dozen decent chances.  Our end product is poor.  TC and Small have given us great width and transformed how we play.  There is still a bit of hoofball but it’s league 1! However, both the above would not recognise a decent cross in a chapel.  I just have this nagging fear that we’re going to come from nowhere to miss out on automatics on goal difference and it will be our own fault for being shyte until December and then not delivering a couple of pastings when we really should have.   All of that said when I managed to get back to the Valley in late October for the Wigan match, what I saw depressed me and I’d have given my right leg to be where we are now (see what I did there).  I just hope we don’t fall short because we don’t capitalise on our dominance.  Just keep on winning……

And how nice to have a decent ref for a change!
    Decent ref?
He was absolute shite 2nd half.

Enjoyable day out watching us win at home again - I think it's very easy to forget that last season, we went from about December until March between winning any home games. I was fortunate to miss the Crawley game at home, so have only seen us lose at home to just Blackpool all season. We have a real sense of togetherness that hasn't been consistent across our side for many years that has lead to a genuinely strong home record that other teams probably fear. The Valley is a fortress and no one will want to play us here if we do end up in the playoffs.

As others have said, first half today was really, really good. Defense is rock solid and teams rarely get a sniff at our goal when we are at home. Spine of the team is showing some real consistency, and there were standout performances all over the pitch. I'm pleased to see the best side of Gillesphey at the moment - big physical presence every game and those diagonals that looked hopeful in the first half of the season are now looking a lot more threatening with the pace in behind of Small, Campbell and Godden. His errors are much, much less frequent and I think the others are learning to support him better. It just feels like we have less and less weak links in these games.

NJ deserves some credit for being cautious with the substitutions whilst the lead was only 2-0 - I thought he was wise to keep the older heads on for a bit longer. I think less experienced managers might have gambled bringing on some of the younger players on to chase the 3-0 and could have ended up with egg on face. If we'd taken our chance at the start of the second half, I think it would have been a 3-0 win at a canter, but thankfully their goal and late rally was seen off by the changes we did make. Charlton teams of the last few years would have probably thrown the lead for a point, but this side is made of sterner stuff that will see us compete for promotion when I never thought we would.

It remains utterly wild to me that we even have a chance of competing for second. Our form is outrageous right now and, as a minimum, across two legs, we are more than capable of beating anyone in this league (aside from maybe the gilded Champions elect that sit 12 points clear). Was hopeful that the Wycombe vs Wrexham game might have ended in a draw to help chase our dream of 2nd, but selfishly, I kinda want a playoff semi-final game at home. I missed the Donny game back in 2019, and I'm desperate for that kind of atmosphere again in a game that matters.

Another huge 3 points. Every game is a step closer to something that felt impossible. Lots and lots of credit to NJ and this team.

Excellent attendance considering Wigan looked like they had about 700.
Possibly more home fans than for those games against Sheff U & Sheff W in our automatic promotion season. (If not roughly the same).

It also looked to me like there were actually @16,000 in attendance.

Wigan had 596. Agree that the home figures actually looked accurate for once too
