My Great Grandfather, Augustus Hood played for Charlton before they went professional. His best mate who played at the same time as him was Ted Basset he went on to win an FA Cup winners medal for Notts County. They both lived in Deptford. Gus as he was known did not go onto play professional but remained great mates with Ted who always carried around his winners medal. Is there any official record of our pre professional teams anywhere, I would love to be able to share some with my Dad who is now in his late 80's

    One of the cardigan brigade will be along shortly i'm sure, but i just did some quick googling for my own satisfaction and found Ted Basset has his own wiki page, also there's a history from 1905 on another forum that might be of general interest, and Oggy Red did some digging on this forum a few years back, based on a photo ostensibly from 1907 and also club records there and held in the museum i believe;

    Charlton Albion were one of the many other "Charlton" teams of the pre-WW1 era.

    Did he play for Albion or Athletic?

    The only trace the museum has of anyone called Hood playing for Charlton Athletic is W Hood playing in one match, on 9/11/1918 at Dulwich Hamlet - lost 3-1.

    No other info.

    If Charlton Albion were around in 1860 can we claim a spurious connection to them and claim that we are the oldest football club in the universe like a certain Surrey team who's name escapes me at the moment did?
