Has anyone from the club actually said that our budget for the coming season is going to be poor/low/Div 1/or has in any other way suggested it wont be enough/very good, or is this just assumed speculation ?
    No, they haven't.

Carter spoke about being sustainable which many took to mean not throwing loads of money at it but nothing was specified as far as I can remember.

Some have decided we spent little last season despite the club stating we had the 4th or 5th biggest budget according to Methven.

The club has just appointed an ex-EPL CEO which doesn't suggest penny pinching.

IMHO we will spend but the nature of the division means we'll be in the bottom half or even bottom quarter budget wise.
Exactly this. Spending big by our standards in comparison to most of the Championship is going to be the equivalent of Burnley spending big compared to Man City and Liverpool.

Your last line is key Henry, we're going from a league where half the league doesn't spend a transfer fee to a league where £2-4m is the norm for most of the league to spend on one player and there's a lot of sides that are more than happy to splash the cash.

For the hard of hearing can someone please repeat when the window reopens?
    7 days after it shuts.

    Allegedly.
Will this thread shut as well, hopefully?

Yes I accept that there are gems to
be plucked out of league one but we need to be signing out of contract Championship players as our staple, not just league one. Good players in league one don’t always equate to good players in The Championship. We load those hopes and expectations onto too many of our recruits and we might come seriously unstuck. Chapple and Jones are shrewd I’ve no doubt but so are the rest of the division. We can’t outbid most of our rivals and we can’t just think we can outsmart them. Yes I know our squad is nowhere near complete but as we stand I can only see about six players that will possibly make the cut. That for me leaves a minimum of 8 Championship quality players required.

if there are no significant funds, what would be the point in recruiting Phil Chapple and a CEO who signed 20 players in a window.
Who said there “no “ funds ….. the owners said there will be funds available to make us competitive and we’re very open to fans about their ambition for getting us back in the big league .. not going to get there by having “no “ funds

No need to be rude to other fans.
Just move on or don’t read posts from people who’s opinion you disagree with.

Another element this season is that we need nine players on the bench. One of Nathan's rationales for reducing the squad last season was that he didn't want to have too many players outside the match day squad.

With the extra two places , this means that he needs twenty rather than eighteen as his core squad. He can now always have an extra striker , but doesn't need to lose defensive cover to accommodate this.

Played 109 games over the last 3 seasons. Stats look like he isn't hugely strong in the air but is decent in the tackle. Passing looks pretty accurate too. Young, played 26 games in the Championship and out of contract

Reading fans rate him very highly. Would be very happy if that happens 👍

I'm lazy, so don't take these as my thoughts, but here's some speculation on who would be good targets from The ChatGPT A.I.

Charlton Athletic, returning to the Championship with a small budget, will need to be smart in the transfer market—focusing on free agents, loans from Premier League and top Championship clubs, and undervalued talent from League One, League Two, or Europe. Here's a realistic and strategic shortlist across positions:

    ---

🔁 Loan Targets (Premier League/Championship Youth)

    1. Liam Delap (ST) – Man City

Physical forward, Championship loan experience, likely available again.

    2. Harvey Vale (CAM/LW) – Chelsea

Versatile, creative midfielder; impressed on loan in League One.

    3. Tommy Doyle (CM) – Man City

Experienced at this level (e.g., Sheffield United); may need minutes again.

    4. Zach Awe (CB) – Southampton

Young, promising defender; could be loaned out for development.

    5. James Beadle (GK) – Brighton

A strong young keeper who could challenge for the starting spot.
    ---

🆓 Free Agent Suggestions (Summer 2025)

    1. Conor Hourihane (CM)

Experienced, great delivery and leadership; could guide younger players.

    2. Lukas Jutkiewicz (ST)

A strong, physical option up front who fits well in a direct or target-man system.

    3. Josh Scowen (CM)

Aggressive, gritty midfielder, experienced at this level.

    4. Ryan Nyambe (RB/CB)

Quick, versatile defender; released by Derby in 2024.

    5. Korey Smith (CM/RB)

A useful utility player, especially valuable with a small squad.
    ---

    📈 League One/Two Bargains

    1. Jordan Williams (RB) – Barnsley

Consistent, quick and can play wing-back. Likely affordable.

    2. Alfie May (ST) – Charlton

Retaining him will be critical. If they sell, a replacement like Jonson Clarke-Harris (if wages align) could fill the gap.

    3. Ben Garrity (CM) – Port Vale

All-action midfielder with an eye for goal.

    4. Jack Whatmough (CB) – Free agent/Lower League

Played for Wigan; strong, Championship-capable defender.

    5. Max Sanders (CM) – Lincoln

Technically solid, deep-lying playmaker, possible for a step up.

    ---

    🇪🇺 Cheap European Markets (Scouting-Dependent)

    Scandinavia & Eastern Europe:

Players from Sweden, Denmark, or Slovakia often bring quality and can be available under £500k.

Nice to see we have Alfie May and even ChatGPT likes to suggest ex players to return (James Beadle)
Might've been a touch more convincing if Charlie Kirk was in there

Doubt he's someone we'll be in for but Joe Low the big CB is leaving Wycombe at the end of his contract.
I'm trying to think of any other footballers who have rhyming first and surnames?
There must have been a Mark Clark somewhere, but other than that Gary Neville's Dad is Neville Neville, but unfortunately not a footballer.

16 year old CB according to this, so would have moved up to our u18s this coming season. The link says his birthday is in February so we couldn’t have tied him down to a pro contract until 2026.

    https://www.rocnation.com/sports/reuben-gokah/

Made 7 starts plus a couple of sub apps for our u18s last season (last two games are missing from the stats).

Would player morale in the camp be a little bit shored up because you’re apparently allowed more people to be named as subs in the Championship?

It worries me that Preston, mid-table for ages, crowds in the teens, have outbid us for Small. He was one of our better players bar the defence, and seemed to like it here.

I think we will still be shopping at Lidl.
