Deadline Day from Pg.641 - Summer 2025 Charlton Athletic Transfer Rumours

Lockyer as player/coach and 6th choice is probably fine.
We know Jones values having experienced players in our squad that know his style and can set the standards for the rest. Plenty of championship experience too, and if there’s a chance he could get back to even half the player he became at Luton then it could work out very well for us

Mad that the logic seems to be that they were fit last time Jones managed them. They aren't now!!

Not to say it won’t include Fukuda, but I don’t think it was a comment about a specific player.1 -

I don't think we've got a lot of options if we want to bring in another centre back:
1. It's pretty late in the window and all of the decent, low cost/out of contract options will probably have been signed up already.
2. We're clearly looking for a back up option and the wages on offer will reflect that squad status. Those factors will limit the appeal of joining us to any decent player for this level looking to extend their career and get meaningful game time.
3. A loan from a lower division side is unlikey to be of the required calibre.
4. A premier league club will not be keen on loaning a young starlet knowing they are unlikely to get good game time/development.
Most of our transfer business in this window has been very good but it does feel like mistakes may have been made in signing the very injury prone Burke and in allowing Alex Mitchell to leave on loan. If NJ believed Zach Mitchell would be up to the job he seems to have revised that opinion based on ZM/s admittedly shaky performance at Cambridge - and that feels more than a little "knee-jerk".
On that basis it might be that the experienced and talented Lockyer might be the best of a bad set of options.

If Lockyer comes with semi reasonable evidence that his heart problems shouldn’t be an issue, then it’s a cracking signing1

He would be absolutely mad to continue playing, surely his health is more important than money.
I can't believe his family would be happy with him playing either.
He has had two almighty let offs.
Go into coaching or something if he wants to remain in football but for God's sake don't attempt another comeback.10 -

FWIW. I thought Lockyer was a cracking player when he was with us but left a nasty taste in the mouth him having a relegation clause in his contract.
That & having a heart issue means a NO from me.4 -
There are many cases of footballers playing with pacemakers for years after being fitted with no more heart problems whatsoever .
If they thought it was likely to happen again he’d never get insurance.I’d be more concerned about his physical fitness having not played for so long .4 -

But also he's not played since the terribly sad heart condition and only recently cleared to return, is he anywhere near the same player he was?
I'd like to see us look abroad for a new defender, there's not a lot of value or prospects in the UK, right now. WBA and Plymouth had great success and good value last season (Heggem cost £0.6m, sold for £10m, Talovierov bought for £1.5m, sold undisclosed)23 -

We're getting into the difficult area now of how you get a backup centre back who is good enough to fill in but willing enough to sit on the bench praying that Lloyd's Jones' hamstring explodes. The reality is you either pay a decent amount for a good player who then gets annoyed at not playing and leaves at the first opportunity (like Alex Mitchell did) most likely at a financial loss or you find a player who is good but cheap because something weird has happened either with fitness or life, which is a Charlton specialty at this point. Or you can get an inadequate bit of cover that doesn't cost a lot but doesn't do the job when he plays, like Terell Thomas or Sam Lavelle. Hard to justify spending big money and big wages on a reserve and hard to lure him over but impossible to not have the right level of cover. Lockyer fits the bill if he's healthy enough, just remains to be seen if it's a real possibility and if he's well enough. I hope he is for his sake and ours, he's a decent Championship centre back and he needs to see if he can continue his career.9

The knowledge that he had severe injury record was there. The whole thing is so od
Actually nothing odd about it. Just another member of the Nathan Jones mutual support group for Luton rejects.
Nathan Jones took such a pasting as manager at Stoke and Southampton that he has developed a siege mentality, stubborn and closed to advice from outsiders. "My way or the highway". He wants to surround himself with yes-men and is more comfortable with those who remind him of his glory years at Luton. This is such a common pattern with public figures, politicians, entertainers and military leaders it is easily recognizable.
Sometimes it works. Stalin got the job done. Hitler didn't. It has worked for Nathan Jones so far. Much as I would like to see us at least try to play football, I realize it could be very dangerous to change strategy now. I think we are stuck with it, at least until the end of the season. I do not think we will get relegated, and we do have a very remote chance of making top 6. Keep your fingers crossed! There is something very odd about signing a permanently injured player. How we play is irrelevant to signing someone who’s body is not up to the rigours of championship football all.
😁
Makes me cringe how people think it's a sign of intelligence to be able to differentiate between the use of their, there and they're as an example, big fkn woop.
Some of the most interesting/intelligent people I have met can't spell for toffee or write very well, it is not a complete measuring stick at all.
Tell your step son to ignore the noise and carry on as is.
Clearly doesn't matter to you your honour....fecking judge & jury on everything.
For some people it's about standards (learning difficulties aside).....we're all different and all have different things that please or agitate us.
Now, back to the rumours I reckon.
It's a bit different if it is academic, or you're a writer, or blogger etc, where writing is key, but why does it matter on a Charlton forum or social media etc. Also wouldn't hurt to PM someone and try and help them privately rather than embarrass them. I just don't think it's the 'gotcha' that some people do.
I agree there has to be standards, but that's in certain environments and being cautious about who you might be dealing with.Callumcafc said:4 -

Had a lot of time for Lockyer. Obviously a gamble given his heart and lack of playing over the last few years, but will have the hunger and desire to prove he’s worth a contract
he’s also a good defender2 -
Signing Lockyer would be a crazy risk especially considering our injury woes with some recent signings….it was just a TBT photo1

Lockyer has had two heart attacks on the pitch and missed all of last year with a knee injury, Id hope we could find a better 6th choice in truth9

Stand down he’s off to Barca

i believe he was back training at Bristol Rovers over the summer.0 -
