Eni Aluko v Ian Wright

My estimate is that most would, but some not.raytreacy said:I she was a white woman would people have the same view of her? I am not playing the race card. Just interested in peoples honest opinion.
Let's be honest when you consider what Joey Barton said, then I'd side with her on that.
Additionally, Aluko was saying Fara Williams and Aluko should have been on the TV panel, but I can't stand either & Williams is/looks white.0 -
I think she’s finding her level and will probably end up making a name for herself as one of these professional provocateurs. There are loads of them who make a living out of being contrary for the sake of it.2

raytreacy said:I she was a white woman would people have the same view of her? I am not playing the race card. Just interested in peoples honest opinion. In this case I think probably yes. She has a misguided view of what qualifies to be a 'brilliant' pundit - it certainly isn't directly linked to playing for England 105 times. Put simply, she is a very poor pundit and that's got nothing to do with the colour of her skin. She played the sex card with Ian Wright, not the race card - the last time I looked, Ian Wright was black. She turned on him because he wouldn't pull strings for her to maintain her employment with ITV, so I would guess he shares the view of her poor punditry. She is not a particularly likeable character either. If she had stuck to her view that women should be front and centre to commentate and be pundits for women's football then most would have agreed, in the same way most would agree that men should be front and centre in commentating and being pundits for the men's game. But she didn't - she focused on 'her' rather than her sex because she believes she is a brilliant pundit.1

The lack of anything resembling self-awareness is hilarious. Imagine for a second the thunderous noise if those she had asked for feedback were not gracious and just.... nice to her and were honest instead
Off the top of my head the most catastrophically stupid acts where I work have been committed by graduates. And I work with a lot of uneducated thick people as well as educated ones

The best pundits are the ones nobody notices, like referees. When someone is on talking a load of bollocks and doing it badly people notice.JohnnyH2 said:
Makes no differnc to me. She is an awful pundit.raytreacy said:I she was a white woman would people have the same view of her? I am not playing the race card. Just interested in peoples honest opinion.
If she was any good, TV companies would be lining up for her if ITV do not want her. Or she could set up her own podcast. But at this point that has not happened and you suspect if she did set up her own podcast the numbers would reflect what the public really think
Has anyone ever met anyone who says they like her on punditry because I certainly have not
There is an enormous pool of ex professional footballers who want to do media work, tons more than there are jobs for. When Joe Cole started doing it I thought he had been beaten up before he was put on live tv, he was awful. Good now but atrocious when he started.
You make a great point about how she can start her own YouTube channel, podcast, whatever and showcase her talents while she waits for someone to notice and make her an offer she can't refuse.

Mr I Wright ... offered her a gig and she took it.peterreeves said:She really doesn't get it.... In my opinion she has a chip the size of the grand canyon and needs some humility. Definitely the wrong show to go on... Who advised that?

I still think Aluko is a better pundit around the female game and certainly better than the buffoon Rooney2
-
Nope. I actually don't think she's the worse of the new batch of pundits that have entered the arena in recent years.raytreacy said:I she was a white woman would people have the same view of her? I am not playing the race card. Just interested in peoples honest opinion.
I happen to think Clinton Morrison and Michael Dawson are equally terrible.3 -
Well that was a prolonged and protracted resignation from future punditry work!1
-
What I took from it was that she is essentially saying Ian Wright should have pulled strings for her because they are both black? Then she says she withdraw herself from consideration for any pundit roles, then moans that she didn’t get any pundit roles?
Narcissistic tendencies.4 -

She comes across as surly which makes her easy to dislike. Maybe if she was a man she could get away with it but women in front of the camera are expected to be smiley and engaging which isn't her forte.1
-
Not this shit again. Yes of course they would. She talks absolute bollocks, can barely string a coherent sentence together and brings no real insight to the game. To draw a parralel, Alex Scott is a perfectly good pundit, and doesn't get criticised - because she's not bad at her job.raytreacy said:I she was a white woman would people have the same view of her? Alas, Aluko has been targeted with mysoginism and racism for many years and probably is randomly hitting back.
OK she isn't a great commentator, but neither are Shearer, Rooney, Lawrenson, Murphy, Keown, Hart, Radcliffe, Redgrave and others. Most have been coached but are still lacking personality. Eni, I doubt had similar media training.
Do we really think the pundits on MotD research the post match analysis?14 -
A few of her calls make me raise my eyebrows. For example, there was an England Women's game and the ball was going in and a player in an offside position headed it in needlessly and the goal was disallowed. And Aluko was taking about the player doing well and that is what they do in training. I don't think so. She should have said, she should have left that. I have no bias against her, it just feels there are issues in how she reads games.
My disapointment was how she brought Ian Wright into it as he hadn't done anything wrong. He is a big supporter of the women's game.0 -

Any relation to Dale Stephens?22 -
Aluko has said quite a few things that have got people’s backs up, but I’m not interested in contributing to the race/gender stuff right now because everyone’s saying their bit on that. So instead I want to highlight a couple of things she said which raised my eyebrows that aren’t race or gender related:
Firstly, she talks about having caps as being some sort of qualification for being a pundit. I’d say it’s of almost negligible benefit. Personality is infinitely more important. You only have to look at Shearer and Owen at the top of an enormous list of excellent ex players who are atrocious pundits. There are exceptions of course - for example, although I find Carragher and Neville a bit annoying, you can’t deny that they live and breathe the game and their passion comes through. Carragher, in particular, clearly works his arse off to prepare for MNF, so although I can’t stand his voice and disagree with a lot of his opinions, I’ve got to give him credit for that.Shearer and Owen and many others always seemed to puff their chests out like the world owes them a living and everyone should be in awe of them. But the reality is that the only really successful pundits are ex elite players not because they’re better at it, but because they’re a recognised name. To be fair, some great players are good pundits, but give me a journeyman (or woman) any day. Sometimes the players Sky selects for EFL games purely because they played for one of the teams involved turn out to be the best pundits because not only do they know the game, they’re passionate and they don’t think they’re billy big bollocks.
Secondly, she kept saying how everyone she worked with told her she was doing great so she must be a good pundit. (Sorry, I mean “brilliant broadcaster” because she worked with “brilliant broadcasters”. Apart from this being utterly false logic, is she aware she was working for itv? I don’t think the words “brilliant broadcasters” has ever been said about itv football coverage. This is the home of Sam Matterface and Clive ‘cushion faced twat’ Tyldesley ffs.)
Anyway, it seems she’s unaware of the fact that in broadcasting, everyone blows smoke up each others arses. ‘Oh, Laura Woods, do you think I’m a good pundit?’ ‘Yeah Eni. You’re brilliant. Best pundit ever. You’ll go far. Oh, there’s my lift, see ya.’
Asking the people you work with if you’re good at your job when they have nothing to gain from telling you you’re shit is meaningless. That’s in any industry, let alone broadcasting.
Thirdly, she kept mentioning Fara Williams. Now, I love Fara Williams the footballer. She was fucking great. She seems a nice person too. But she’s not cut out for broadcasting. I hate to say it, but I can’t understand what she’s saying half the time, she talks like she’s got a mouthful of marbles. I’d say she’s like Peter Beardsley in that respect: she’s a great player, a top person, but she shouldn’t make her living from talking on tv.
Well, that’s my two penn’orth. Feel free to disagree! 😎7 -
Either way, her face is on everything i look at this morning ffs0

Shouldnt have bought so many copies of 'Eni more rubbish? ' the Eni Aluko autobiography (ghost written)0

A truly dreadful pundit with zero personality - no loss to television. Making a fool of herself...2

Educated thicko, I have never heard that before. Isn’t that a contradiction in terms. There are many forms of intelligence. I have an IQ of 150 but I am no good at practical things like putting a flat pack from Ikea together. I worked as a Fund Manager. The people I worked with were largely from Oxford and Cambridge University’s Some of them had no aptitude for the job but that didn’t make them thick, just not suited to the job they were doing.Carter said:

I think Eni Aluko gets a lot of stick because she is an outspoken opinionated woman and some men don’t like that..As a closing parentheses can I say I don’t like the woman. I find her.surly with a chip on both shoulders.0 -

Re: Graduates being intellectual by default - I’ve always thought it was fairly widely accepted that a university degree don’t automatically make someone intelligent in a broader sense. What it generally shows, in my opinion, is that a person has spent 3 or 4 years studying one particular subject in depth, so naturally they’ll know more about that area than most people. But outside that specialty, their knowledge and problem solving ability may be no better than anyone else’s, and when discussions move away from their field, some graduates can struggle just like anyone would because intelligence isn’t based just on academic credentials. Personally, I tend to associate intelligence more with wisdom, practical judgment, and the ability to understand, rather than simply holding a degree or having academic knowledge in one area.7

Anyone outspoken and opinionated tend to get some stick given back, especially when most of what that person says is a load of bollocks.raytreacy said:

Racism, mysogyny, random assumptions, this CL thread has everything a pedant could wish for and thrive on.
However, I love Ian Wright, so feck off the other person (i've never heard of)!0 -
Variation on a theme, was at uni with a girl who, when we started, thought Birmingham was the capital of Scotland. She is now in early 50s and lives in a big fuck off mansion in Sevenoaks. I’m sure she knows where that is.lolwray said:

I think you answered your own question in the first three sentences. And no, that's not a cheap jibe. But there are, just as you say, many forms of intelligence. Some people have sufficient intelligence to get through a course, pass an exam and write a dissertation, but don't have the intelligence to apply anything they've learnt to the real world. Some people have certain skills that mask for a lack in other areas. For example, they may have be able to confidently use complex words and speech patterns even though the logic to make cogent arguments just isn't there. I think this group can often slip through the education system, even breeze through it, because no one has the time, energy or inclination to pick up on it; you know all the right words, you must know what you're talking about it. It's also the case that people with good educations tend to have more self-confidence than those that don't and are therefore better at self-promotion. They are also cut more slack by others, at least, up until the point there they are outed. So whilst 'educated thicko' may seem like a contradiction in terms, I think it is a very real phenomenon.raytreacy said:
