agreed about 3d. its expensive and truth be told, gives me a stonking headache
Me too; I sit there rubbing my eyes for half the film instead of watching it.  Meanwhile character development, plot development and what passes for dialog are all sacrificed just so that things can be made to fly out of the screen at you.

Whoever said Pulp Fiction, I completely agree. Seems to be an essential part of being a student that you say you like that film. We had three copies of it in my flat as everyone I lived with brought it up and I had high expectations for it. I was pretty sure I could see Tarantino palming himself off in the background of every single pointless scene. The worst part of it is if you say you don't like it everyone tells you you just 'don't get it'. Pah
You clearly don't get it Garry
Love that one. I also once had a guy in a pub ask me what the most obscure film I'd ever seen was. Not the best, the most obscure. He then competed with me by reeling off a load of films listed on Wikipedia as particularly obscure. I didn't talk to him again. I can't stand people who turn films into a way of trying to appear cool, talking your views down and reeling off facts like they have a different Wikipedia to you.

Hugo is good in 3D ... but it's a great film anyway
  • Only 3D film I;ve ever seen that was good was Alice In Wonderland - but that was only because it was a great film anyway - Tim Burton is a genius. In fact, that film should be in the 'underrated' thread.

    Dead Poets Society is crap.

All of the Harry Potters are absolute crap.

The Draughtsmans Contract is also crap, as is all Batman (and other superhero) films.

Mask is crap with the exception of the shot where that beautiful woman turns up at the bank.

...there are loads more but I can't be arsed to think of any.

nearly all of tim burton's films i've found to be pretentious rubbish. Definatley "overrated" director for me.

Tim Burton films annoy me , including Alice in wonderland. I cant forgive him for making Sweeney Todd into a poxy musical.

I see he's in the process of making a film called Dark Shadows - A gothic horror starring Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter ....Zzzzzzzzzz

The only one i really like is Beetlejuice.

The reason it was a musical was because it was a direct lift of the stage production.  I agree with you though, the poxy music did ruin it.

I don't think I know of another director that gets it so right with the visuals and so wrong with the sound, consistently in film after film.

King Kong. The critics got very excited about that one.

    The Kings Speach.

Not bad, but certainly over-rated in my book.

Was fairly bored in Alice in Wonderland, liked few of his other films. I think he needs to realise that there are other actors than Johnny Depp and Helen Bonham carter too...

American History X. 8.5/10 on imdb. The subject matter is interesting but the film itself is hardly great.
Fully agree. It starts well then gets real dull really quickly. One of the most pretentious films I've ever seen, especially with the shots of Ed Norton having a shower in slow motion black & white.

    Good Will Hunting.

I really should stop going on this thread. Some of your opinions are making me rage :)
