Players who flopped after leaving us.

Boredom, procrastination and curiosity led me to Zheng Zhi's wikipedia earlier today. After his solid Championship performances and being voted the 5th best player in the Football League according to FourFourTwo I was fully expecting him to play in the the Prem. It appears not. Only a handful of appearances for Celtic and now he's back in China and judging by his stats isn't setting the world alight.

Can anyone else think of players who promised a lot while playing for us then flopped horribly when they left?

Parker @ Chelsea. He picked it up elsewhere though... and, erm, ended up as England captain! Darren Bent was allegedly more useless than 'arry's Sandra while at Spurs, but hasn't done too badly since.

One I was sorry to see go but Curbs turned out to be right about cashing in on him while he still could was Kinsella, who did nothing at Villa and two years later was reduced to plying his trade at Walsall.

Andy Hunt ''flopped'' big time after leaving Charlton at the age of 30 and never played at pro level again - but for very different reasons that had nothing to do with loss of form or being over the hill.

Sasa Ilic. Went on loan to WHU; let in four goals (I think it was four - and all of them his fault) in his only game for them and got sent straight back to us on Monday morning. Hardly played again for CAFC or anyone else, despite spending time at Portsmouth, Barnsley and Blackpool.

  • Darren Pitcher. Swapped him for David Whyte and Paul Mortimer AND some money. Defo got the better end of the deal there.

Ferencvaros I think. They beat Man Yoo 1-0 in Budapest then bravely went down 6-0 or something in the second leg.

Off the top of my head, Simon Webster is my nominee.

He was unlucky and it made a change; it was usually Charlton who picked up players that hardly played due to injury.

    My nomination is Claus Jensen.

He did. But then moved on to Palace before coming back to us. Or so my recollection goes.

He did play champions league - the club was a hungarian club called Zalaegerzeg (not sure of spelling).
Only reason I remember is because I watched it in a pub in Hungary with a load of Hungarians. Me and my mate were the toast of the pub for being English, yet cheering on the local side.

If my memory serves me correctly he got sent off for jumping to catch the ball and then drop-kicking Van Nistelrooy at the same time. Moment of sheer madness.
