Leaburn became a key player for us. Some didn't appreciate that though!

Andy Hunt didn't have a particularly good first season for us - 7 goals in the Premiership (seem to remember it took him ages to get his first as well). But then followed that up with 25 in Division 1. It's a shame he had to retire the following year, as he scored 4 goals in the first 8 games at the beginning of that Premiership season.
  • Surprised it took someone this long to mention scott parker i never thought he woukd make it as a player but the boy that came back from norwich was amazing

Kishishev- looked a very dodgy right back in his first season, got a bad injury at start of his second but moved into midfield in his third and didn't look back.

But Parker was always viewed as a positive youngster - true he really came back fron Norwich a great player but given his age i don't think you can put him in this category.
  • I thought he was going to be another youngster
Full of hype but no product unfortunately

Like the lad who was banging the bird from girls aloud

Parker was poop up until norwich

Simon Webster doesn't fit this catagory for me, but I post because it's always good to give Webbo a mention. There have been very good ones, but can you name me a better captain we've ever had?

Played over 350 games (inc subs) and scored 53 goals (league), made double figures 91/92 and 93/94, though I can't ever remember him being prolific (read this on wikipedia...if you can believe that), it did state on there that Mendonca thought he was the best strike partner he had at CAFC.

What, better than Andy Hunt? If Sir Clive said that he had one too many sherbets

In fact Leaburn and Sir Clive only played 9 games together. Sir Clive only scored three in open play in those games so Carl was evidently not a prolific assister for him. Even then S Jones was generally prefrred to Carl. Curbs brought Mark Bright in , he came on as a sub for Carl and scored and that was that.

Darren Pitcher was similar, a poor RB, but a decent midfielder when eventually moved there

I thought Mark Bright only came in after Leaburn left to join Wimbledon?
Steve Jones was a different sort of player to Leaburn, I can imagine Sir Clive enjoying playing with Leaburn (aka Michael Owen enjoying playing with Heskey)

Kishishev and John Robinson stick out for me... Leaburn a very poor mans Heskey imo.

Just goes to show with all these players mentioned that we shouldn't really be writing off Green, Dale Stephens or any of our players untill they have had a chance to shine in the championship.

They're still fairly young as well, scabby, it's not like we bought the finished article in either players

Agree, I think they might surprise a few people this season especially Dale.

Paddy McCarthy was a lot better when he came back into the team. Hardly great, but a lot better than before he was dropped.

What up flipping it round. Good - turned bad.

Martin Pringle would get that one.

Not unless Marcus Bent is ruled out since his good spell wasn't long enough!

  • Mike Flanagan was very inconsistent at first playing out on the wing. He turned into a world beater once he had his hair permed and switched to centre forward.

Carl Leaburn. After that notorious long non-scoring period he became a very effective centre forward, regularly scoring 15 or so goals a season and making countless more.

Are you sure ????? Think he scored 14/15 one season but mainly picked up 7/8 a season

Wiggins for me, I though he was pony at the beginning of the season, misplaced passes, giving the ball away, sloppy tackles, but then it all came good.
Really? He had an OK first half v Bournemouth when he was boo'ed by his old fans. Made an error or two but grew into the game. Don't remember him having a mediocre game after that other than when he played on the wrong side. He was never "pony" IHMO
Jeez that's a harsh judgement. He couldn't have picked a worse team to make his debut against given the circumstances of his leaving and even then he wasn't that bad, just overshone a bit by Hollands, Stephens and all the rest that were playing their first game too. After that he had a pretty much perfect season.

    Peter Shaw

Without a doubt, took horrific abuse from covered end, probably worst I've ever heard from fans against one of their own players to become a cult hero. Definately not the most skillful agreed but a powerful CB who gave 100% to the cause & would put any part of his body on the line to block shots.
Those with poor memories may disagree ?

FFS all those slating Stephens (in other threads) need to wipe the shit out of there eyes, imo we were very lucky to get him & will become a top player.( He's still very young) He may have faded a bit after getting injured but you'd need to be a blind man not to see the quality he has
  • for Charlton id say...Andy Hunt, signed when we first got to the prem and never made an impact, ripped it to bits the year later in the championship then unfortunatley got that illness to force his way to retirement.
otherwise the most memorable is Henry at Arsenal.

I thought about peter Shaw because he was awful to start with and rose to being poor to average -so definitely inproved but can we say he was bad to good -good a little to strong for me.
