There are so many but I am going Desert Island Discs i.e. my favourite eight so in no particular order (and it will change tomorrow)

Here there and everywhere - The Beatles
Castles made of Sand - Hendrix
Signed Sealed Delivered - Stevie Wonder
    Gimme Shelter - The Stones
With a little help from my friends - Joe Cocker
Say a little prayer - Aretha Franklin
    Crossroads - Cream (live version)

But! The Ballad of Lucy Jordan - Marianne Faithful (can any else remember a cartoon that was used to illustrate this song on Whistle Test? I can't find it on You Tube)

This is a briliant shout I love that record!

Impossible question. Would struggle to pick 3 just out of those mentioned above.

However one song - not mentioned so far I believe - which gets me EVERY time is the red red robin. Not the greatest song in terms of the tune or lyrics I guess, but in terms of the pure emotion it conjours up ( for me, anyway) it sure takes some beating.

To develop this idea a bit I want to return to the original question...'best song'. I suppose that means the song can do something whatever the version, by whoever the artist.
Are people really saying here their favourite version of their favourite song, or are we talking about a song that cuts through whatever the treatment of it?

That's a tough one Seth. I've been trying to come up with my top three (not quite there yet) but the ones I've considered have been around a particular version, usually the original, rather than the song as a work irrespective of artist.

It's an interesting question though. I've just come out of a supermarket where they were playing Comfortably Numb by the Scissor Sisters. There's no way this would be close my top ten, but Floyd's original is. Then again, it is for me easily the best Scissor Sisters track. So what if an artist that you don't really like mullered one of your favourite songs would that drive it down the rankings?
