Windows 8

Just got a new laptop with windows 8 must admit its terrible OS. Really user unfriendly unless it's on a mobile. Any other experiances? Any tips before I launch my new laptop out a window? (8th window in the house)

Its more user friendly than scrolling through endless filelists! If you have any experiences of phones or tablets then its easy to get used to as well.

Having a touch pc or laptop helps

  • There is an option to change the layout of windows 8 to the old style....metro style or something... It's on the desktop... I like it... It's more functional and will take some Gerri.g used to but its quicker
  • Has anyone got one of those Windows surface they keep advertising on tele , and are they any good?

I used Windows for years and trust me there is nothing I miss about it. I actually have windows 7 on my Mac and never use it.

NO NO NO !!!!! Microsoft don't know the meaning of a good o/s. Wonderful products yes but a fully functioning and tested o/s. NO NO NO !!!!!

No Soapy, don't let it get to you...take a pill and get back in your box...

    Sorry Gaz ;0)

  • Just got a new laptop with Windows 8 and I can't find anything -- control thingy, for example; or how to shut down! I hate computers (though they have their uses when they work).

    Typing this on old netbook.

I installed the Release Preview a few months back and regretted it immediately. It wasn't the bugs that got to me, as it was after-all still pre-release, but the features themselves. I can't speak for the stable release version but here it goes...

    - I want to click a PDF/Video and have it open, not to be transported out of the actual "Windows" interface and in to the Metro one.
-- Solution - Set all your default programmes up.

    - I liked my start button; it enabled me to be productive without having to keep flicking into square-land and looking at a bad mosaic
-- Solution - ermm.. havent found one.

    - If you install even a few apps, your metro interface will be cluttered with LOTS of useless icons you'll never use. I have icons for uninstallers and alsorts, I installed some of Microsoft's developer tools and they took a whole (widescreen display) screen of icons up..
-- Solution - After every installation right-click and remove the pointless icons you'll never use

There's lots of issues, but these 3 represent the bulk of them - issues to do with the new interface. The new interface grows on you, and it is pretty handy (you start typing and it starts searching straight away etc) but it's not suited to a traditional PC format. If you have a touchscreen then brilliant, it should be awesome.

When I was installing it I was chatting to my girlfriend about buying a new MacBook for work, she said she'd never buy a Mac as the price wasn't warranted (true.) - yet as soon as installation was complete and she saw what was in store for her next time she bought a PC.. well, she is now pricing up MacBooks.

Microsoft have thrown everything into developing Win8 - but I'm not convinced as to whether it will pay off or not. They seem to be putting all their money on this being the future though; i.e they went to lengths to remove the ability of having a traditional start button. (The functionality originally wasn't actually removed, and it was possible to get it back - then when the instructions appeared online MS quickly released an update which removed it..)

Bottom line for me is that it's actually grown on me, I like it - and will probably buy a license (I think I can get one for free actually) and keep it when the release preview runs out. I spend all my time in the traditional desktop though, and ignore more of the new features.

Check out the new Windows Phones. They share the blocky interface.

I run 3 machines day in day out. 2 are xp, and one is Vista. Never get any problems, and the reason is? I dont put crap programmes on them or surf the net unprotected. The Mac is God myth is just that...a myth.

Installed Windows 8 last night. Looks pretty good, like it but time will tell. Took me a while to figure out how to shut down though lol.

Am I being stupid here. Is there a way to close programs such as skype and spotify without having to go to task manager? If I close them, they just sit in the taskbar. Windows 8 will stop frustrating me one day...

8.1 is available, I've downloaded and it appears to give you the old desktop back and the easy shutdown option. It's all rocket science to me though.....

When you are on your regular desktop, move the mouse to the top left of the screen and right click on the application (e.g. Skype) when it appears - you should be able to close it from there.

Or maybe I've misunderstood what you mean - if it's on the taskbar once you've closed it then it probably isn't running but is just pinned to the taskbar. You can right click it and select "unpin from taskbar" which will get rid of it. Sorry if I've just confused things further...

Quite possibly the worst operating system windows have ever thrown up. Hate it with a passion.

Anyone worried about Windows 8 - don't worry, you still have the ability to upgrade to Windows 7

I don't think it is at all bad, have it on a HP 10inch tablet with blue tooth key board, it is great for productivity on the go I can use Itunes with it and access work which I can't do with either Apple or Android. The apps in number are much smaller but there are quality games from Xbox.
