    Your confusing stadiums with atmosphere. Fulhams fans may be soulless but the stadium certainly isn't .in fact it has more character than most stadiums.

    The OP said boring stadium and then mentions souless stadiums, to my mind the fans are the soul of any stadium, and Craven Cottage has no soul. If we are talking about architecture, then yes its nice!

    The problem is that when building a medium sized stadium, certain templates get copied. For example, when Middlesbrough built the Riverside, it was quite stylish, but subsequently an awful lot of clubs have built very similar bowl grounds, so it looks boring.
    Sunderland (through their's is a lot bigger)
    Derby
    Leicester
    Soton
    Cardiff
    Reading
    Stoke (minus a couple of corners)
    Swansea

    I think they actually spent much more money than they needed to. A stadium in a similar design to the old Wembley but 'revamped' would have been absolutely fine.

    Wembley is large, but unexciting. The outside isn't at all impressive for the money spent either.

    Been to most of the new ones and will have to go for The Ricoh. Edges it for me as they had the Tesco Stand.

    Yeah. Those 3 temporary stands are fine examples of modern architecture.

    Vicarage road. By design actually. Until they sort out that stand its going to be terrible.

    I think craven cottage we saw on a "bad day" so can't judge on the FA cup performance alone.

    Emirates. Terrible

    Every time I've been to Wembley it's been pretty bad too. I think that's largely cos you can't get songs etc going very well. Best atmosphere I've seen in the 5/6 games I've been to there ironically was the Olympics... Senegal v Uruguay (followed by GB v UAE) was amazing. Everyone cheering on Senegal and Suarez getting booed every time he got the ball was hilarious.

    It's one of these new identikit stadiums with four stands, all the same size, built on an industrial estate and they don't sell alcohol inside.

    The advantages of out of town 'boring' stadia are several:

    Decent urinals
    Easy to get to
    Decent parking
    Good viewing from most seats
    Easy access to catering facilities.
    AND: A long way from residential areas so that the non footballing local dwellers are generally free from yobbos and dickheads smashing their property and persons.

    Why people say Craven Cottage has character is beyond me. Two cheap temporary ends, a plain as anything stand by the river and a stand that looks nice from the road but not from inside. I guess it must be the cottage itself?

    Grounds with character:
    Goodison
    Hillsborough
    Villa Park.

    The Stade Louis 2 has more character than Craven Cottage.

    Doncaster's Keepmoat is probably the ultimate bowl stadium, without even the 2 tier main stand that some grounds have...

    gotta say, i agree about the new wembley. The old one was so steeped in brilliant history and this one just feels so plastic and corporate. Same with the emirates.

    Wembley is horrific.
    Says a lot for me to say this but I'd prefer to go to see a game at the Cameldome than Wembley.

    The Valley's been dead ever since we built the North Upper... Nowhere near as bad as the above mentioned grounds though.

    All depends who's playing at Wembley. England games are pretty poor...however a playoff final or FA Cup game brings the place to life and you see what its all about.
    Went to the Everton v Man Utd semi-final there a couple of years ago and the place was rocking.

    The Ricoh for me. It edges out the other soulless bowls as there was no reason for them to leave Highfield Road in the first place. So far out of town too. These new stadia make it a pain for train travellers.

    I miss the Baseball Ground, Filbert Street, Roker Park etc. Derby, Leicester and Sunderland have all won promotion at their new grounds so would have benefitted from larger capacities and felt vindicated for moving but they have all lost something by doing so.

    Grounds that I used to think were awful now seem charming. I shall miss Roots Hall when Southend move for example. I'm sure Oxford is a lesser day out now the Manor is no more.

    Oh and I know we've never played there so it won't be on many people's radar but the Deva Stadium in Chester is a breeze block fuelled Hell hole. I visit with a Seals supporting mate now and again.
