10 and half things you never knew about San Marino

1. San Marino makes 63% of its income from selling postage stamps

2. Famous people from SM include John Wayne, Marconi and Eddie Firmani's mum.

3. People from SM are called either Marinettos or Marins. This is a llong running dispute which goes back centuries. Fights can break out and often do

4. There was never a law in SM banning gays or lesbians until one day in 1997. It not that they were very liberal just that they never got around to it. This caused a problems with the European Human Rights act so they had to pass a law banning gays in the morning and then another legalising them in the afternoon

5. However many thing were illegal in SM until recently including smoking a pipe in public, flip flops and eating strong cheese on Sundays.

  • FACT 1
San Marino means 'Without a Marina'. Why? I hear you ask, well to elaborate, the last King of San Marino, King Alan the Unsteady (who was an alcoholic), took delivery of a very nice Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB), he decided to use it to go across the Marina to see one of his many concubines, halfway across the marina, the wankered King capsized.
The crowd that had gathered laughed their tits off at King Al, so in a drunken fit of pique he had the marina filled in and for good measure he built a mountain on the top and a castle where he imprisoned the boat builder! He might still be there now for all we know.

    FACT 2
And they arent very good at football, this is thought to be because 99.9% of San Marinese can trace their decedents back to Scotland.

In 1987, Derbyshire bus conductor Sam Narino was forced to change his name by deed poll after repeatedly receiving errant mail from the Italian enclave. Unfortunately his new chosen surname, Plumbase, was usurped by an up and coming builders merchant for their kitchen and bathroom division. After a deluge of orders for taps and shower hoses, the unfortunate Sam killed himself. As a trubute to the Chesterfield clippy, Plumbase now sponsor many football teams around the country including Heaton Hawkes, North East Leeds, Pant Boys & Girls and the charmingly named Bird Park FC of Bicester. Some of these teams play to a higher standard than the San Marino national side.
