Back to the topic (ha). I remember this game, had a tear in my eye when he came out.

Blues bring back memories for Powell

Few may have expected Chris Powell to be preparing for his fifth successive start in the Championship for Charlton this season.
But age means nothing to the 38-year-old, who received his first England call-up in what most would consider the mature years of a footballer's career.
It was the day before the Addicks travelled to face Coventry City (at Highfield Road) on February 24th, 2001 that Powell heard he had been selected for Sven-Goran Eriksson's first ever England squad to play against Spain.
And Powell recalled the last league meeting between the two clubs in the Premiership, saying: "We travelled up to Coventry and my phone was going a bit ballistic that day.
"I personally felt under quite a bit of pressure, but I got a great reception from our fans - I remember that clearly."

I still love the Legend that is Sir Chris!

He let the ball hit him and it bounced away enough for the Cov bloke to get a shot off. He made one other failed interception but recovered to knock it away. To be fair, he very rarely makes technical mistakes. At his age he can sometimes get a lively young winger to try and stop which is difficult for him. I for one am glad he's back. He is just one top bloke.

From the short highlights I've seen, he was also having to cover for the centre halves much of the time - even for the goal either Madjid or Fortune (couldn't quite make out which one) lost a challenge to Adebola right before it came in Chris' direction.
  • Powell's "mistake" was just one of those unlucky moment that any defender can have. The ball came at him at an awkward height and he could not adjust in time and Mifsud got in behind. Far less culpable than some of the errors that poor old Bougherra was making.

Never let 'em see you sweat
  • Powell looked to have made one mistake and he let a goal in...but credit Mifsud for getting in between Powell and the ball, Bougherra made several mistakes and got away with each one, such is football.
