Colin Powell Testimonial Match

There will be a more formal announcement shortly but I thought I’d give you guys a ‘heads up’ that the forthcoming friendly against Inverness Caledonian Thistle on Saturday 27th July has been designated as the Testimonial Match for Colin Powell and I, along with Peter Varney, have the honour of making up Colin’s Testimonial Committee.

The Testimonial has been granted by the Club in recognition of his 30 years service as both an outstanding player in the 1970’s and 1980’s and then since 1988 the Club’s Head Groundsman at The Valley and Peter and I will soon be announcing a number of exclusive hospitality packages available for the match.

Like many Charlton fans, Colin was one of my favourite Charlton players of all time; the legendary forward line of Powell, Hales and Flanagan has to be one of the greatest in the Club’s history but my own association with him goes back to 1988 during my first spell at the Club when I was Commercial Manager and together with the then General Manager, Arnie Warren, I visited Colin at his former place of work, Westminster School to offer him the role of Head Groundsman at Charlton Athletic.

I’ve also played many times with Colin for the Charlton Athletic Veterans Team and once turned out for him in a Veterans team at Margate FC in a testimonial game when he moaned at me throughout the whole match!

Clearly Peter and I appreciate that the attendances for pre-season friendly games are traditionally quite low but we very much hope that as many Charlton fans as possible will join us at The Valley on the 27th to show their appreciation for a man who has given such loyal service to Charlton Athletic, both as a great player and a respected Head Groundsman.

Any help that the members of Charlton Life can give to Peter and I to get as big an attendance as we can for Colin, will be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Steve Sutherland

Thanks for letting us know in good time.

It will probably be his redundancy package.

I met Colin on Friday. After visiting the club shop I enquired at reception to see whether the club do any stadium tours. I was told that the club doesn't have enough interest for it and only did it on special occasions. However, a member of staff offered to show me the stadium from pitch side where he introduced me to Colin. Colin went out if his way to take me on the pitch and show me the new turf and pose for a photo in from of the North end. And it was his birthday on Friday as well.
  • What a player Paddy was. It was no coincidence that whoever played up front with Paddy scored so many goals, be it Hales, Flanagan or Horsfield. One of the finest wingers in the country of that period and would have been knocking on the door of the England team had he played in the first division. Really nice fella as well, wish I could be there to support his well deserved testimonial.

I think it fair to point this out. Don't let your dislike of Airman colour your judgement.

I understand that when these type of fixtures are negotiated, the visiting club doesn't take a cut in the same way it would if it was a friendly, therefore both clubs would have known at an early stage.

I would have been far more likely to try and make a testimonial for Paddy than just a friendly but I don't think I can now due to the late notice.

good to see that the Club is still willing to be associated with this considering PV's involvement. I did also worry that PV's involvement at Ebbsfleet might scupper any loan deals for the kids but hopefully that won't be the case.

On a brighter note, well deserved for Colin. He is one of my favourite ever players as my entry in the Valiant 500 will testify.

I have to disagree. Suthers clearly said it was a heads up and given that Airman himself has given us heads up on things before the clubs mentions it, it is not unusual.
It's nothing to do with a dislike of the man (I would assume, not knowing them or their relationship), simply a wearyness over his constant pecking at the club now he is not part of it.

Please do not let this good news be hijacked.

Don't let's use this thread for more of this. I assure you that the club not announcing the testimonial until three weeks before the game is 1) wholly unprecedented and 2) for political reasons. It's very poor and indicative of what is going on at the club. Suthers knows this as well as I do. But now they have publicised it let's focus on supporting Paddy.

Inverness have had a good season and looks like a match that has been chosen for football reasons - which is what ought to be th ecase with friendlies.

I'll be on holiday but will be buying a ticket regardless. Colin would have been a millionaire in today's game. He deserves every penny we can give him.

Paddy is not only one of my all time favourite players but we have mutual mates but strangely I have never had the pleasure of meeting him.

Anyway can't make the match but will deffo buy a ticket so a true CAFC legend has a good day. Thanks Colin for all you have done for the club.
