I've just asked my mum about the photo I posted with her and her mates next to the bus. She told me that the bus was hired from Lewis Coaches and the pick up point was in Tunnel Avenue Greenwich. She thought the bus was off Wembley in 1947 to watch the Cup Final against Burnley. She remembered dancing with Sam Bartram, Gordon Hurst (7) and Chris Duffy(11) at a Charlton Athletic social after the final.
She can't remember who the no. 9 is in the second photo but it must have been taken at the Valley in the late 40's or 50's.

The 'we want Leary' photo.....wasn't that when he went on some kind of strike, refusing to play and ended up going to QPR. May have been also something to do with his cricketing commitments. I remember it was a sad way to end his time with us.

Johnny Summers sadly died in the summer which affected Leary badly and he wanted a break, given that as you mention he had played football and cricket continuously for many years, however Frank Hill, manager at the time, said no. Leary didn't show for training apparently and that was that. Hill flogging him (to QPR) at the first opportunity.

I was too young to be aware of all this as it happened but can remember my grandfather saying a year or so later, once I'd started watching, we should never have let Leary go as all he wanted was a break.

Len I think it was the great Colin Cameron who said that instead of letting Stuart go the board should have sacked manager Frank Hill instead. Here is a photo of a young Stuart Leary.
  • The defender on the post has the stature of Phil Warman, though I wouldn't recognise the face. I.

I agree stature and body shape looks like Phil Warman - it just doesn't look like his hairstyle

That's what I thought - didn't Warman have lighter-coloured hair than this fellow? And wasn't he a bit stockier? Maybe it is Richard Wilson after all....

  • It's not so much the hair colour as such, more the style.
Maybe there was a breeze blowing, or like you say maybe it's just somebody else entirely.
It's bugging me though for some reason :-)

Yes, it's bugging me too. His barnet was lighter - have a look at Warman on Google Images. That ain't him on the post against QPR, surely...?

Didn't Smith have a bubble perm? He played in just five games for us that season (I don't have the line-ups for each individual match). Two other suggestions for your consideration: David Campbell (not tall enough?); Tony Hazell. I reckon it might be Wilson - but what's he doing defending?

    A Corner?
  • Right, I've gone back to Colin Cameron'd trusty tome, Home & Away etc and checked out the team photo for the season and the line up for the QPR game.
The only possible candidates are Warman, Madden and Wilson and on the basis that he is the only one who didn't sport a 'tache it has to be, as Lewis Coaches already deduced, Richard Wilson

Brilliant - We got there in the end! What's the title of the Cameron book? The only one of his I have is 'The Valiant 500'.

We got there 13 hours ago ;-) Home and Away is the other Colin Cameron book.
  • "Home and Away with Charlton Athletic 1920-2004"

It's an absolute "must have" Viewfinder - every game, line-up, goalscorers and more besides.

As my ageing memory for detail fails it sometimes helps to remind me of games I know I attended but can't bring to mind.

One of those books you'll always be dipping in and out of and as you would expect written with skill and tlc

Yes, must get that. At the moment for the stats I'm relying on Paul Clayton's 'The Essential History of Charlton Athletic'.

Yes, we did! We went round the houses and came back. How about another of your fiendish quizzes, Shirty5, to take our mind off the gloom.

    Haven't a clue.
A friend puts them on his Facebook but hasn't commented when I've asked.
I think he's glad he can work out how to put them on there.
