Good job we're "only" playing Inverness Caley.

Imagine if it was Barcelona. Or Bournemouth.

If there's a positive - hopefully the board know that they will have to find the money to get a couple of strikers in.

Terry Butcher is in talking to the media now. Says the first half was like playing against @celticfc, but better in the second. (IL) #cafc
  • It was a game with no edge to it and played on a warm day when nobody wanted to get hurt. Some nice touches to give encouragement for next week. Some lapses to give the usual worry. 23 other teams in our division will be saying exactly the same thing.

Can anyone explain that formation to me. It made Wiggins and Solly look uncomfortable and isolated Yann up front which given the number of players we had in midfield almost seems impossible.

No attack whatsoever, Yann goes for all the goal kicks and heads them 20 yards on to absolutely fucking no-one , or drops deep and looks for a pass, only to find the entire midfield has dropped even deeper to accommodate him! Harriott was still losing the ball by trying to many tricks, Pritchard loses concentration with the ball in dangerous places and Stephens just looks lost. Need a serious step up for next Saturday

I think the formation came from lack of players to try something else. Have to hope for a bit of Smart dealing in the next week or two, or TJ will find himself trying to offload a broke league 1 club instead of a championship one,

Perhaps but it could well be that is what we have to work with next week. Bloody scary as we were god awful. If we don't get in anyone then I hope CP goes 442 and keeps it tighter than what we did today. Can't see any merit in tinkering with a weird formation one week before the kick off.

other than the obvious striker problem, like pritchard but he is no right winger, so we lose emphasis when we have the ball down the right. centre mid seems ok with various combos available. thought harriot was a lot less positive today, hope he is not being told to rain the off the cuff stuff in, thats what makes him exciting to watch. yann in attack woefully isolated, if he gets injured god help us. cant judge whats to come by a friendly, but totally underwhelmed today and slightly worried for the season to come. keeping fingers crossed now!!!!!!

CP: It's no secret we need to improve the [striking] area and I am hoping I will be allowed to do that." (IL) #cafc

Just got back. To be honest I thought we looked pretty good, particularly first half. Gower dictated the play and we looked very comfortable with the formation. We kept possession for long periods. I agree we lacked a cutting edge but have no real moans with either the style of play or the effort and attitude. Reckon we only played the ball long to Yann once, everything else was on the floor.

I was sat behind the ICT bench. First half Butcher and Malpas were concerned and had several discussions about how best to cope with the way we were running them ragged.

Certainly not all doom and gloom in my book.

Really impressed with Gower. Can't remember him misplacing a pass (long or short) all game. I really wanted Stephens to shine, but he just couldn't impose himself.

What exactly was the formation? How were the midfield set up? I take it that it wasn't just a flat 5?

Gower is very neat and tidy but I am slightly concerned that once again we are likely to have a very pedestrian paced central midfield with him and JJ. I thought Stephens looked very mobile but as you say didn't convince against very average players and continues to frustrate.

Can't agree with SirJohnHumphrey about anything actually. I thought we were dreadful to a man. The formation isolated Yann and exposed his deficiencies which frustrated him. I realise we will tighten things up but that today was hopeless.
