Sorry, did you really use the figure "$4bn" right next to the word "only"?

facebook user numbers are dwindling amongst u18s/young people. i'm guessing this is the company trying to spread their bets.

One of my Whatsapp groups has the most depraved filth on it. There is no way I want that linked with facebook in any way at all.

Does anyone use Whatsapp for anything other than (ahem) 'banter'?

I'd never heard of it but 19bn ? Apparently they only employ 50 people

This is possibly the most ridiculous valuation of anything ever.

Here is what is going to happen. Facebook will ruin or commercialise whatsapp.

Someone will come up with another version, which is basically whatsapp but without Zuckerberg's shite all over it.

Facebook then buy this new messaging service.

    Repeat ad infinitum.

Insane amount of money which means they will be looking to increase the revenue through adverts etc much like facebook. Still, nice little payday for the 2 guys that set it up, even if the facebook shares end up worthless.

they won't use advertising, they'll simply sell your data...

Insane amount of money for something that is effectively a text/chat service.

What exactly makes WhatsApp different from what is on Facebook anyway, apart from the fact that info is deleted on the server once it has been sent?

Clearly a lot of money to be made with these messaging apps. Snapchat turned down something like a $3-4bn offer from facebook at the end of last year and that was created by two 23 year olds.

Remember that only 25% is paid in actual money.

75% of the sum is in Facebook stock.
