Simon Church?

I was there Brendan however we were furthest away on the side by the open end weren't we. On the tv highlights I caught up with the next day I thought to myself a hungry, natural finisher in the Killer / Mendonca mould, would have buried that chance but only he knows if the pass to Green was his first thought or whether he bottled it.Brendan_O_Connell said:
Were you not at the Oxford replay when he squared the ball for Green? He could have easily had an attempt himself, but gave Green a tap in.thenewbie said:
Off the top of my head I cannot remember any of Church's undeniable effort actually directly helping out any other player. No assists that I can think of, he's not any kind of threat in a penalty box when a ball comes in, defenders don't panic when they see Simon Church running towards them, they take their time, and they can afford to.ForeverAddickted said:

You can run your arse off all day long but if there's no end product, what's the point!
There is putting in a shift for the team, and then there is running around like burnt-arse bluebottle achieving f*** all. Church falls squarely into the latter as far as I can tell.0 -
FL site says Church has 2 assists (but 0 in the cups, so not reliable)

Twitter claims Nottm Forest are keen on Churchy
Must admit I'd be willing to let him go if I'm honest - especially if there's a couple of hundred grand in it2 -
Oh, you shouldn't give poor Spongefoot all that grief. He hit the ground running with two goals in the League Cup against Oxford. Yes, he has missed some absolute sitters, but we all know the service to the strikers is wayward, bordering on the non-existent. Hey, since Kermorgant has gone, Church is our top scorer!1

Many harsh comments here in my opinion. Tell me a player who tries harder in our squad? Really like him and hope he starts on Saturday.

I said when I first saw him that he ran the channel well
Seems nothing went down the channel or he failed to do anything with it1 -
I've never seen a player in a Charlton shirt who put in more effort than Simon. Unfortunately I don't believe that alone makes him good enough to play in the championship.0

A confident striker would have taken the chance himself and scored!Brendan_O_Connell said:

funny how 2 wins against average oppo is 'this far in the cup' isn't it. Just makes you realise how crap this season has beenLincsaddick said:with better service from midfield and a decent partner/winger alongside, he'd be OK .. remember his Hudds goal got us this far in the cup .. (alright he didn't do it alone, but it was a very well taken goal)

Not the type of guy women will be after:
1.He runs round like a b***** dog on heat.
2. Never looks settled.
3. Always chasing something he hasn't got.
4. Never delivers where it matters.
5. But I suppose it does take him ages to finish.2 -

Give Churchy a break and play Jermaine Easter (then can some Icelandic bloke give him a kick so he misses the Millwall Derby tie)0

Must be a different Simon Church, that article says "striker" :-)shirty5 said:0 -

Slow? Lol.cabbles said:
He may give 100%, but of that 100% there is about 10% ability. Big guy, but can't hold the ball or hold off an opponent. So slow. Doesn't get in the positions regularly enough to score goals. I don't rate him, at all.eug72 said:I rate Simon Church. I wish

Sadly, my heart sinks when I hear his name. Its obvious that CP rates him, so you can bet your house that he starts on Sunday. If you watch him carefully he is very good at galloping after an opponent, but never quite gets there in time to make a tackle. You can throw abuse at me if you wish, but frankly I would rather see Toby Sho Silva there. It is up front that I think we will win or lose the game, I have already got the prayer beads out.0

No one that understands football would ever throw abuse at you for not rating Church. He's a poor player. If as the BBC website says, he is injured, then this can only be a good thing he has a chance of missing the Sheff Utd game.Granpa said:Sadly, my heart sinks when I hear his name. As you say, Powell rates him, and we continue to see him unfortunately.0 -
There's hardly a lot of choice now is there?
Unless you give Sordell a run of games... :-00 -

Fortunately he was fit for our previous two FA Cup games as he scored in both.cabbles said:

He had a good game v Wednesday and I don't think any of our other strikers could have done the same job in that game.
I don't rate him that highly but who would you rather see up front? Tudgay is now available but if AA plays behind we won't have much pace up there.
If you play 2 up front who do you drop from the midfield?4 -

According to the BBC he is injured for tonight's game Wales v Iceland. Wonder if he will be fit for Sunday?0

This is the sad state of it all. I agree we're not getting any value from Sordell. It's too early to judge Reza, he's getting use to the pace of the English game. Polish Pete is obviously one for the future. So that only leaves Tudgay who himself is a recent addition. I can see why Powell plays him, I just don't rate him. I don't buy the fact 2 goals in the last 2 cup games makes up for about 4 or 5 in the league.Scoham said:

I have nothing constructive to add here, maybe try Reza and Tudgay as a top two. But then like you say, who drops from the midfield 5 (this dilemma is partly influenced by accommodating Jackson as well though). Church up on his own with Jackson tucked behind isn't great either................0 -

Is it just me, or does Jordan Cousins appeal for handball when Churchy scores and then quickly realize he should keep his mouth shut?
I don't have to watch him every week, but based on the two televised games and bits and pieces of highlights I've seen I think Churchy deserves a bit more respect than he gets. His goal record does not stand up to much scrutiny, but he's played a big part in getting us to Sheff U on Sunday, a game which everyone is very excited about and at least he puts some bloody effort in.
Effort alone is not enough, and in an ideal world we'd have better players, but imho putting in effort should at least earn you the respect of the fans.
If we must have players who don't make much happen, at least lets have ones who look like they are trying to make stuff happen.1 -
I'm not going to be one of the ones who gives Church abuse in the stands, because he clearly tries hard and I don't doubt his commitment. On the other hand I am not deluding myself that he is anything other than a clearly and obviously limited player who is at the very highest level he could convincingly play at! His superior goal ratio in the cup counts against him for me - playing better against for the most part lower league teams, or weakened 11s? Yeah, that doesn't look so good.0
