Brighton u21s v Charlton u21s

Went to the game. We played a 4-5-1 when defending which moved into a 4-3-3 in attack. Gerard was the most advanced CM but they all got forward.

Beeney - did well enough considering someone said he's 15. The odd poor kick or ball you'd expect a senior keeper to hold but didn't think his age or lack of experience was obvious from watching.

Pyke - reasonable job at RB without standing out.

Osborne - saw him twice last year at right back, more comfortable in the middle, again did well enough. Been on loan at Sutton Utd, with Gomez (hopefully) coming through and Lennon already signed up longer term I'm not sure if he'll win another deal.

Lennon - well taken goal but I think it was his failed attempt at a clearance that led to Mackail-Smith's first goal. Was captain and what must have been his family were sitting a few rows in front of me. Again did well enough overall.

Evina - can't imagine he's happy playing in these games. Didn't stand out as you'd hope he would and I expect him to leave this summer and probably end up in League 1, maybe even 2. CMS knocked him to the floor to create the equaliser, completely outmuscled. Solly and Wiggins aren't big themselves but I think they'd handle a challenge like that better.

Munns - tidy and good feet but one of those that you ask is it enough. Very small and because of that needs to really stand out in other areas. Obviously the club think he has a chance as he agreed a contract until 2015.

Daniel - hadn't seen him before and can see why we offered him a deal after he left Palace. Was a threat on the counter, would run with the ball and usually pick a pass. Think it was him that put Sho-Silva through early on (who hit the post) and PP (who put it just wide). Like Munns good touch and control and also showed a decent range of passing. Also has a contract until 2015, hard to say based on one game but there might be a useful player there. Moved to LB when Pyke went off injured, with Evina at RB.

Gerard - as with the other CMs decent on the ball. On the counter attack for his goal we had several players running into their box. Munns got the pass and tried to lift it over their keeper, was saved but Gerard was there to finish. As with Munns not sure how well he'd cope physically.

Sho-Silva - still on loan with Welling but back to play for our u21s. His pace and height cause problems. Unlucky to hit the post, had another chance after a poor Brighton ball across their own box which he blasted over, needed a bit more composure. If he's here next season I think he could probably do with regular football out on loan, hopefully in the FL. Probably more comfortable as a striker playing on the wing than our first team strikers.

Koc - flashes of pace and skill but mainly in the first half. Right footed so looks to cut in more. Still not worked out why he's here though? If we had no wingers on the bench I'd have him there just to offer that type of threat from the bench.

PP - average is fair. Not going to win headers against Champ CBs and not a big strong targetmen. Occasional decent touches but some poor ones, a few too many to be honest. Couple of efforts at goal just wide. Nothing to say he should be written off but didn't show he's a better prospect than Pigott or Smith.

Two of the trialists (I assume) came on quite late. Not sure how they can show anything in that amount of time. Hanlan one of our own also came on and looks to be another striker/winger similar to Azeez and Sho-Silva.

I wouldn't say he didn't cope but I could see why he's not been playing for the first team. If he gets a bit stronger, holds up the ball a bit better and takes one of his chances it turns from an ok performance into a good one. Not impossible considering his age and the fact that he's adapting to a new country, club and style of football.

As I said I wouldn't write him off based on that, he may just need some time. A few on here that went to Derby said Pigott looked a stronger and better player, and Smith has improved to the point that he now scores goals at League 1 level. I also wouldn't expect to see him used as the main target man or physical presence up front, unless he really improves that side of his game.
