There was a young man called Chris,
Who not many people would diss,
    Not renewing his contract
    would seriously detract,
But if we keep him, we’ll all be in bliss!

Or both ... hope he gets back to you! Maybe he'll be a touch embarrassed too.

You need to put the unhappy ending to this a few more verses from when it was first written to now

I don't know about you Paulie but I'd prefer it if it was shorter. It's a bit long for me already.

How many extra verses? I'd say 4 but my nan reckons 5.

Maybe something along the lines off

    Unfortunatly it never worked
And you was forced to leave
But you will always be loved
For wearing your heart on your sleeve

In your last season with us
You came close to bringing us a cup
Then Riga came and took over
And helped to keep the Addicks up

But for you the journey is over
You got us back on track
    A club legend forever
Thanks for bringing our Charlton back

Yes it's a nice little end paulie, however I think it's done now. Powell has gone, I still love the guy but this poem should be left in the past. Powell read it, he loved it and his words were 'it cheered me up no end' this was when he was very unsure, quite rightly, of his future and he was obviously down. I put a smile on his face and let him know that we were mostly behind him and he left us knowing that, so job done.
  • I don't know how I missed this when it was originally posted. One of those weeks, I guess. Brilliant work, SadieJane

Whilst reading it, I imagined Sadie to sound like Pam Ayres. .........................

Great poem! Apologies for continuing it...

    New owners came in
    And rumours did fly
    That they didn't want him
And it would soon be goodbye.

    But they denied it
    Saying Powell is our man
    And instead we said goodbye
    To Dale, Ben and Yann.

    We were promised new players
    To replace former stars
    We tried big name signings
But our attempts hit the bar.

    A striker from Poland
    Another from Iran
    An unfit midfielder
    And the dreadful Thuram.

    In the league we struggled
    But there's always the cup
    Perhaps we can make Wembley
    Then hopefully stay up.

    To Sheffield we wandered
    But there it went wrong
    A dismal cup defeat
    And soon Powell was gone.

    The fans were in mourning
    And feeling beleaguered
    They've sacked our icon
    Who is Jose Riga?

    We missed our legend
    Things weren't the same
    Whose fault were our problems?
    Were the Belgians to blame?

    But Riga was clever
    He rallied the troops
    We picked up the points
    As other teams drooped

    Eventually salvation
    Three points did the trick
    Watford defeated
    To make Elton sick.

    You'll always be a legend
    Sir Chris Powell to us
    Good luck for the future
    Now in Jose we trust.

    Powell was our manager
and did alright in league 1
and towards the end of last season
but this year he was crap

He refused to adapt to a new boss
    and got sacked
so a new guy came in
got on with what he had
and showed everyone where Powell was lacking

    The end

It has a ring to it if you read it with a Flemish accent

Rhyming is overated, free verse is the way forward
