Championship dark horses or show ponies

  • I'd be happy with a top-half finish and laying the foundations for a promotion push the following season.

This. As long as were not facing the trap door from September i'll be happy. Top half would be great. Play-off's are unlikely and if i had a free £1000 bet for top or bottom half i know where my money would be! (My cup is half empty)

I'm not thinking show ponies with this squad or manager, lets just hope we haven't got the pony and trap ;)
  • Some people are getting a bit carried away here. Even a top half finish would be good, we're a new team with a new manager. The likes of Cardiff, Fulham, Norwich, Watford, Derby, Brighton, Wigan, Reading and Forest are all stronger than us. It's a very tough league. Yes we've spent some money but one club just spent 11m on one player. This is what we're up against.

That said, there's usually a surprise team. Burnley last year, Palace the year before, so anything is possible.

I look at this way, our form from when Riga took over was comfortable mid table. the players we lost/let go apart from 2 did not contribute much if anything and we have by general consensus improved the squad with 3/4 quality signings on paper.

If Bob gets them to play well together in an attacking style, I think mid/top half is achievable with playoffs a real possibility.

I think RD is looking for promotion this year(hopefully) or next (a must have) he is spending a lot, although not rashly on everything connected to cafc

The odds haven't moved for a month and therefore do not factor in our recent "binge". I still think we are a long way from the top ten in terms of quality and much of our fate depends upon how Peeters and the new players gel. One thing I am sure is that if it is going well then we can expect more of the same in the January window. If I could sell relegation I would as we will be nowhere near the bottom three. I think more like 65 points. So I'd go with @Czech_addick as I suspect 75 points and 6th place is too big an ask right now.

I'd be happy with a top-half finish and laying the foundations for a promotion push the following season.

The whole squad apart from Wilson, Church, Buyens and Ben Haim are on two or three year contracts so this is definitely a work in progress.

It is a brand new team with a whole lot of new players learning how to play together. The old guard will be learning the Peeters way of playing. Peeters will also be learning about the Championship as will the new European signings. The amount of time that all the players have been together prior to the new season starting is relatively short. Even now, there are new key additions to the squad being made and hopefully still to be made. The additions still to be made may make a positive difference but my comments on are on the team as it stands today.

It may all slot together and there may be an element of surprise against other teams. More likely the first 12 games will be a struggle. Charlton supporters may have to hold onto their hats, be patient and keep their cool. Charlton may well be in relegation places (edit) in the division and may have even received a 3 or 4 heavy defeats.

It is a new team that will hopefully start to gel from 12 to 23 games. Where the team will be after 20 games will be more of indication where Charlton will end up at the end of the season. Lower to mid table is a more reasonable expectation of where the team will end up. If things are still going pear shaped after 23 games then that would be a worry.

A top half finish IMHO would be an unexpected bonus.

    Requirements to win the league:

    1. Get a proven goalscorer at this level thats highly motivated to play for us...which is like steven hawkings trying to chat up beoncye, it just aint gana happen.

There are of course alot more requirements than that.

    Stability...consistency...being able to win ugly.

I think we will be much better at home this season, with the odd 5-0 spanking to a medicore type nott forest.

Need a top class Gk, Winger, CM and a 20 goal a season CF. We're currently missing all of these.

Very very tough start to the campaign.

Please be better than last season

    Agree.

To sign players like Vetokele and Gudmundssen, somebody is painting a very good vision of where Charlton want to go.

We could be pleasantly surprised - but remember, it is a work in progress.
    Supporters expectations must be realistic.

Must admit that I haven't a clue how well we'll do this season. But what I do know is I can't wait to find out.....................
  • I still think we need another 5 signings to have any real chance of the playoffs. Another striker is a must, we're relying far too much on Vetokele being great. Pope may well turn out to be fantastic but I'd still like a competent championship goalkeeper signed up in case. Would like to see another winger and a creative CM brought in and I don't think we will but I'd like another CB, not convinced with Bikey or Ben Haim.

Or they could already be here, any of Pope, Gudmundsson, Buyens, Moussa and Vetoekele could be one of those players.

Three years ago Green was one of the most hyped up signings. We expected Alonso to play a part, but weren't sure about Pritchard and Hughes. No one was really impressed with the signing of Kermorgant.

We still need that Kermo-type frontman, to hold up the ball and pick a pass, let alone be strong in the air. A wily old head and Championship experienced.

We may have signed pacy front runners quick on the break, but we still need the ball to stick up front - otherwise it comes straight back to put our defence under pressure, once possession is lost.

Relegation..............It's amazing what buying a few players can do to interest and false optimism.

We won't get promoted, our squad compared to the ex-Prem sides and the traditional top half-Championship teams isn't strong enough
I don't think we'll get relegated either, looking at the promoted teams and those which we around us last season, I think our squad will get more points than them

A comfy mid-table season with no relegation fears whatsoever would be lovely, with a good Home record, a few decent jammy 1-0 wins away and the odd +3 Goal mauling of a team in the relegation zone would be excellent

I think the 2-0 defeat to Welling sets the suggestion that Charlton are promotion / play off contenders into better context.

Will get all the rubbish about only a friendly, blah blah blah, but it is now 225 minutes without scoring a goal.

Just 3 shots on target, and none of them threatening too. I don't buy the claim that friendlies are for fitness only, there is a lot more to it than that, take that from someone who knows. Fitness a key part but fitness is all done on the training ground, match sharpness is what friendlies about and we've lacked it thus far.

I know I'll get pelters for saying it, so I'll say it anyway ......... each team we've played started their pre-season before us.

Obviously, we're not going to have the same levels of fitness and match sharpness just yet, compared to our opponents.

We're a couple of weeks behind them.
