Went to see 'The Imitation Game' at the weekend. Thought it was excellent Keira Knightly's character is a bit jolly hockey sticks but Bendidick Crumblesnatch is superb and the film avoids falling into the trap of sentimentalism that these films sometimes do.

A story for which Britain can be proud and ashamed in equal measure and well worth a watch.

Boyhood

I'm a fan of Richard Linklater's films. I really enjoyed the "Before" series of films , which told the story of two people , in three films made over a period of 18 years. With Boyhood he's done the same kind of thing but in one film filmed over a period of 12 years and it really works well. Linklater shows that you don't need bangs or crashes , CGI or ridiculous plots to make a good film . You just need to be a good story teller. I expect this to pick up many awards in the next month or two , simply because this kind of film making is quite rare and at 2 hours 45 minutes it might test some peoples patience but because i have two boys growing up and i'm already a fan of the director, i really liked it.

Some really good acting and stuff, but the script was so predictable I could have written it myself.

Edit: Just read, it's not realeased to UK cinemas until January 15.
I saw it in a cinema in Marseille a couple of weeks ago.

Stunning film. Didn't find it predictable at all.

Carell is excellent but the film is poor.

Saw Birdman last week. Got to say I was a bit disappointed after all the hype. Acting was good, as you would expect from the cast, but not great and the film's story was weak.

Just OK for me 6/10 - it will be a shame if this film and it's leads win Oscars over The Theory of Everything and it's cast.

I wasn't sure what to make of it - I would watch it again to see what I missed. But generally, I agree with you.

Nightcrawler

Like @Colthe3rd i'm really surprised Jake Gyllenhaal wasn't nominated for best actor or that Nighcrawler isn't nominated for best picture. This is a fascinating story involving one of the nastiest characters i have seen in a film for a long time.
Gyllenhaal plays a man who films police incidents or road traffic accidents and sells them to a TV news company.
It's is a darkly wonderful portrayal of how low some humans will stoop for money or to boost an ego.
Rene Russo , who i'm not a great fan of , does a really good job too .
Highly Recommended.

I actually feel the opposite to you. I was disappointed by Theory of Everything, the acting was superb, as was the script, but that's the only positive I could find from it. Thought it was a rather flat interpretation of an inspirational story.

As for Birdman, in my view it was terrific, and the best film I've seen so far this year (Theory, Unbroken & Foxcatcher being the others). The script was pacy and fun. Cast all worked very well together. But it's Iñárritu that turns the film into a high contender for film of the year. The cleverness of the apparent continuous scenes, drifting from one conversation to another through multiple floors of the theatre.

Think I need to give it another watch. I was undecided after leaving the cinema on how good the film as a whole actually was but Gyllenhall was superb. A proper anti hero.

Saw American Sniper last night. Excellent Film directed by Clint Eastwood. I have family in the military who completely agree with the type of warfare depicted in this movie was accurate with actual warfare from their personal experience on tours. Such a great flick and highly recommended. Bradley Cooper will win the oscar for Best Actor by a landslide im sure of it now ...

I can't see him wining it myself but the American's do love a film like this so you never know. Eddie Redmayne should win it for me but then again i haven't seen all the contenders .

Birdman
Billed as a black comedy, it struggles for laughs despite good performances. Glad we paid just a fiver each at the Peckham Plex.

Clearly it is a high success rate, but then if you look at the previous ten years from 04 and only two of the ten winners were based on real people.

I agree with you that Redmayne should be feeling confident though. I'll be watching American Sniper and Whiplash over the next few days, but at the moment he is the best actor performance I've seen from the nominations.

I understand that Chris Kyle is a hero in the eyes of the American people and he did do an important job but this film goes way over the top . In fact i wouldn't have been surprised if this had started with the commonly seen cartoon Marvel introduction , it's that sycophantic and it's no coincidence that this directed by Clint Eastwood.
Bradley Cooper does a decent enough job , as does Sienna Miller and it does entertain if you can see through the stars and stripes.
It's a shame that Eastwood didn't make this more of anti war movie because then this film could have worked but sadly this is just a pro American film made for Americans.

I saw the Paddington movie last night. It was actually way better than the awfull tráiler led me to expect. Very enjoyable, much more than the Penguins Madagascar film which I expected to be the better. One kick in the nuts was that we go to a cinema in Mataro as they sell a family ticket, but yesterday, we were told that a family ticket no longer applies to Warner Bros films. Some sort of domestic spat among the distributors? Whatever, it jacked up the price painfully.
