Apparently only 5 clubs voted against it. Why on earth are all the other clubs accepting this?!

    More revenue of course.

Rochdale v Man U U21's will give them their biggest gate of the season.

But not so great if they're drawn against say Burnley or Bournemouth U21s

Hopefully the U21s all get knocked out in the First Round (Its not like they'll get an easy ride seeing Charlton have struggled against Dartford in the past)

Might make people realise that the Football League isnt that bad at all

Can you see that happening? I'd guess that the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Man city's U21s are better than your average L1 and L2 team
Like I say... Charlton U21s are one of the best Cat.2 teams and lost to Dartford who are three tiers below them.

Chelsea / Arsenal U21s are two of the best in the Cat.1 and will be facing teams who are just two tiers below them... Wont be as easy a ride as many believe

Trouble is it could be a softening up exercise in preparation for the next swingeing change the PL plan to muscle in.

That's the fear. That it's the thin end of the wedge to get Prem B Teams in the Football League.

Neither are Cat 1 U21s so wont be able to participate...

  • It's the old favourite, isn't it?

Someone in the Premier League says, "We'll put in an extra £1,000,000 in the prize pot!", and someone at, say, Bolton says "Brilliant! We could do with an extra Million quid!"

And then, the reality sets in as they get turned over 4-0 at home by Chelsea U21s, and they all scratch their heads why they didn't see any of the extra prize money...

And, as others have said, it's the thin end of the wedge, it continues, and the Premier League clubs end up getting even more TV money, and an extra game at Wembley...

On the other hand our u21's beat a near full strength Gillingham team the season before....

So completely depends on (1) How good the U21s are (2) If they are up for it (3) If the opposition are up for it.

Bet there are some League One / Two Centre-Backs who'd love to show those kids a tackle or two

This could set a dangerous settlement for when they introduce a 4th division. It's been assumed that clubs will step up from non league to fill the extra places but what if it's PL 2nd elevens? Also, keep hearing of more clubs that voted against, allegedly, so how come it got passed?

Little brown envelopes of the FIFA kind perhaps?

It will get what it deserves - gates in the hundreds. I hope the 'financial compensation that the clubs accepted in exchange for making it even more irrelevant is worth it.

Also, I believe it is to be regionalised, so a high chance the likes of Bury or Rochdale will play one of the big Northern team's U21's.

More nonsense has been announced for this. In the group stages it's 3 points for a win and 1 each for a draw. But in drawn games a penalty shoot out will be held with a bonus point for the winner

They might as well add sofa's dancing to house music and have done with it.

So 2 points for a penalty win? Seems a bit pointless to me. What's wrong with giving a win, like always.

What an absolute joke . We should boycott it or play our under 21's in it.

I suppose that would have to be at the actual home ground of the senior teams. Hope we get to go to the Olympic Stadium.

I think you may find the Prem teams will be away if against a FL club, and will only play a home game if they draw another Prem team.

Could be the case that the 16 Prem teams are spread across the 16 groups meaning the FL teams are guaranteed 2home games
I was right the Prem clubs will be spread across the groups but they will have to play 1 game at their home ground in the group stage

Is the rule that teams have to play a certain number (6?) of first team regulars?
Or does the inclusion of Premier League B teams mean that every team can treat it as an u21 tournament?

    http://www.efl.com/news/article/2016/efl-trophy-format-confirmed-for-201617-3170687.aspx

So EFL must have a minimum of 5-First Team players in their squad whilst the U21s must have at least 6-U21s

Each Group will have at least one U21 team / one League One team / one League Two team

Round 2 will remain regionalised yet Round 3 wont so we can have a Tuesday night clash against Carlisle United... Well done FA great idea that one, well played

Invited clubs will donate all or some of their share of gate receipts to a fund that will be shared equally by League One and Two clubs.

    - Group Stage ... Invited Clubs will donate their 45% share to the fund.
    - Knockout Stage ... Invited Clubs will retain 25% of their share and donate 20% to the fund.
    - Semi-finals & Final ... Invited Clubs will retain 30% of their share and donate 15% to the fund.

Clubs to play each other once, either home or away. Invited clubs will play one home game at the club’s first team stadium.

Clubs will be awarded 3 points for a win and 1 point for a draw. In the event of a drawn game (after 90 minutes), a penalty shootout will be held with the winning team earning an additional point.

So the Premier League clubs, with their huge squads of players, can treat it as an opportunity for kids and those returning from injury to have a casual kick around, but the Football League clubs, whose resources are much scarcer, will be forced to field half of their first team, even if they've got something trivial like a key promotion/relegation clash the following weekend.

Mind you, it's a great opportunity for us to witness some of the potential stars of tomorrow playing for the big clubs, before they get fed up with the lack of opportunities and being constantly loaned and end up signing for a League 1 or 2 club anyway. Great work Football League.

    What a load of nonsense.

Shows how out of touch the people upstairs are.

Desperate for players rotting in youth teams to get a game against professionals because their clubs can't be bothered to let them grow with experience in the proper way. Most clubs would loan these players out, i really do not understand how this has been sold so a vast majority think this is a good idea.

best way is to boycott it or better still make it a 'CARD' match and get a good attendance but get the game abandoned. Would get good exposure on Sky as all they are concerned with is the PL in all it's forms.

So, the Hamsters have to squeeze in another game at the Olympic Stadium.

When is the draw for their Europa League game? I am sure they will get the away leg, first but it will be interesting what they do, if they don't
