Written without reading previous posts. A lot of positives to be drawn from today's game despite the final score line. Definitely not a performance worthy of a 2-0 defeat.
It looks like we have the nucleus of a decent team. Rudd, Holmes, Solly and Crofts particularly impressed. Sadly Jackson appeared to be the weakest link.
I think in a few weeks this team could gel into a useful unit.

By the sounds of things Jacko can add most value alongside Slade as a coach. Issue is we are so stretched he is being forced to play (and will give his all as always) when even he would say he can't do it at this level anymore.0

Its going to be a long season! First half tactic was hoof up to Jackson, Fox or Novak, and very rarely did we win the aerial duels. Second half was a little better but there is a dearth of creative talent and goals are going to be a rarity I fear (at least for Charlton). Nice to meet @robroy & co - they encouraged the piper to come along!1

On the bright side KM can't say you don't need any more signings. The evidence is clear to see we're still about 4 or 5 established players short.0

I would have thought, first game of the season you'd have your best starting eleven out, which I think baring two players we did. Even if our players aren't not quite up to speed with each other it's plain to see the squad and manager are not up to much.1

Exactly, I would go back to the days of Curbs and Gritty or rather operate like AFC Wimbledon! Yes they lost today but they have spirit and passion running through the club from the chairman to the fans! 23rd position, lowest league position in Charlton's history (admittedly only first game). This is entirely as a result the way Meire & Duchatelet are running the club. We need to keep the pressure on and it needs to be clever , (like last year) hopefully "the final push" will return our club to us and former glory.

We started the second half brilliantly. Ricky Holmes is a quality little player, and his teammates know it. Everything was going through him. He had no support or movement around him whatsoever, which is to be expected when you've got a journeyman of a full back in the midfield. Fox put an excellent cross over for Novak at 0-0 and he just couldn't stretch enough to stick it in. Think Gazza at Euro '96.
Novak looks a handful, and even though he couldn't quite connect with our two best chances, at least he found the space and created the opportunities for himself. Ajose was nonexistent but he has no midfield behind him. Those two could form a good partnership but this team has a long way to go.
Final word to our fans. We were excellent. Quite simply, one of the best away turnouts in years. Everyone was in good voice with some great songs flowing. Non-stop singing, and we even had some bagpipes to accompany Valley Floyd Road. Nothing but 100% support for the boys....and then Johnson, conning a living, tells a group to f*ck off. Our supporters are, and always will be the heartbeat of OUR club and tools like him are everything that's wrong with it at the moment. We deserve better, much, much better. Russel Slade couldn't even be bothered to come over and thank us. Pretty poor that.
Nevertheless, I'd go as far as to say fucking poor!!2 -
Probably wrong thread but anyway. Last season I asked what our goal was - not to get RD out, we know that, I asked how. Many responded to withhold monies (eg season tickets and merchandise). It now seems there is a realistic not that won't work and we just want to be as disruptive as possible for him to give up. As much as that is a valid tactic I don't see it working. He's in Belgium and doesn't give a crap. So how about we try to put together a takeover offer? I don't mean money - unless someone is a secret millionaire? I mean a collective to pass this on to. Thoughts?2

I can handle a moody pen and a scabby goal but the thing that worries me the most is how easy Burys centre halves had it. Novak looked woeful and Ajose will get so frustrated.1

When Slade said he was still looking to bring 6 players in after the Orient game and has only brought in a couple late in the last week, today's result was likely. No time to put in a team structure, pattern of play, and organise ourselves at set plays, when players are still coming in. Considering we have had a six week pre-season to get organised and months before that to get any business done, that's really poor. Non league clubs are better organised.
I notice he is now calling it a "transistional period". So what was the last six weeks? The pre-transistional period?38 -

He has beaten Welling in a meaningless friendly but after that I've been very underwhelmed by him, his team lineup,(today), and his tactics (also today). Last week was a taste of things to come. This week he fields a team that manages how many shots on target against Bury?0 -

Very poor today from start to finish. A decent shot from Ajose and Holmes is not enough to deserve anything over 90mins. Didn't think much of Bury but they clearly know how to scrap at this level. Good day out, one of best atmospheres in a long time. People may say it's only the first game, give it time but I saw nothing out there to warrant any signs of optimism.
Waited around after the game too with a few others by the club shop right next to the team coach. Let's just say I didn't get the feeling the mood within the camp was as great as Slade makes out. Not fair to name names but a few interesting comments from the players too.
Shame we had to leave before Johnson arrived. That man is a disgraceful to football.7 -

Just got back.
The only good thing about what has been an awful day for me was the company of other Charlton fans I met.
I will read back to see if any Charlton fan has anything positive to say about todays events, but coming away from Gigg Lane today was as bleak as the way we all felt leaving Bramall Lane after that cup defeat.

Solly, Holmes and Rudd were the only players who made it to average in my book.
The most distressing thing was that it also looked like poor management in a football sense from Russell Slade, and I had harboured hope with him around.
I have not felt (and some is for personal reasons) as down as this for a long time.1
