Underrated Charlton players

Steve Gritt possibly became a victim of his versatility.
Dear old Les Berry. You have to do something right to play nearly 400 games but affectionately remembered for the back pass from anywhere and the hoof over the gable stand.5 -

............and the own goal against Fulham when he back headed into his own net in front of the Covered End which put us well on the way to relegation.

I never understood why Salim Kerkar got loads of abuse.6

In the history books as a scorer of one of the six in our record away win at Barnsley.cafcnick1992 said:I never understood why Salim Kerkar got loads of abuse.

Nicky Bailey, our best player for the 2 years he was with us (and only remembered for that penalty!)9

Wished there was a stat for the tackles he won - Can't remember too many attackers getting round him.paulbaconsarnie said:Mark Bowen.

Great thread this.
Gary Nelson for sure was underrated. Rarely gets a mention in dispatches when discussing decent ex players.
Mark Bowen was a better player than people realised as was Darren Pitcher. Plenty of reason to dislike Pitcher but he won his tackles and scored his share.1 -
Can't believe no-one has mentioned him: Luke Young.
Not many would put him in an all time favourite Charlton XI, but I believe still holds the record for most England caps as a Charlton player.11 -
Jon Fortune - did great for us at a time our centre backs were up against the likes of Shearer, Henry, Cole, Van Nistelrooy etc13

Good shout for JF Damo, likewise Chris Perry and Sweaty Balmer were very underrated CB's neither were the tallest but won more than their fair share of the ball. Chris Perry timed his jumps so well and often seemed to do just enough to nick the ball away.DamoNorthStand said:Jon Fortune - did great for us at a time our centre backs were up against the likes of Shearer, Henry, Cole, Van Nistelrooy etc

Of all the names I've read Mathias Svensson stood out the most. Haven't read his name for years and years, but he did an awful lot for the team with those cameo appearances. Just looked him up and surprised to see he played for 8 clubs, but a full quarter of his appearances were with us.2

Well I'd say here's the winner.East_Stand_Loopy said:Can't believe no-one has mentioned him: Luke Young.

I don't even remember Young playing for England, whilst at Charlton, let alone 7 times.
One of my mates absolutely hated Young, (could never understand it myself).1 -

I'll add Nicky Bailey into the mix, that Swindon game defined him a bit but people forget he hit a cracking 25 yard effort into the inside of the post in the first leg at 0-0. Fine margins eh0

Mickey Bennett
Paul Williams
Joe McLaughlin
All from Selhurst days.1 -
Finding it hard to agree he was underrated......he was far and away our best player and the crowds favourite for a long period of time.Sage said:Andy Reid.
Not the fittest, but a wand of a left foot who was wrongly asked to play out wide by Pardew. He had so much class and could control a game by himself if allowed to sit in the middle with some runners next to him. Our first season down in the Championship fell apart when we sold him to Sunderland.3 -
Ilic's best game was away at Birmingham I think.jamescafc said:All the obvious candidates have gone so I'm going for Shields (was it that goal against Forest?), Illic (think I saw his best game away at Stoke) and Salmon.

Poor for us but a local legend back in Sweden for the mighty Elfsborg.JiMMy 85 said:Of all the names I've read Mathias Svensson stood out the most. Cracking fella and a very successful businessman.
Not forgetting he scored up at Blackburn to make us champions in 2000.0 -
I don't think anyone disliked bailey and he wasn't underrated.killerandflash said:Nicky Bailey, our best player for the 2 years he was with us (and only remembered for that penalty!)
The star of the 09/10 season. Quality player.1 -
Chris Perry was awesome for us... Surely was never underrated by people?... He was as tall as Solly yet boy could he win headers against anyone!!Albertan_Addick said:
