I avoid musicals as well . The only musical that I actually like is The Blues Brothers.

But what about Quardrophenia, how could you not like that?
I like Cabaret and The Blue Brothers but I'd contend that neither is actually a musical. To be a musical, people have to break into song for no apparent reason whilst doing something that's nothing to do with singing. In The Blues Brothers, with the exception of Aretha's, and in Cabaret as far as I can remember, the songs are part of a performance, making them films with songs in.
Probably a fair description and Quadrophenia is of course a rock opera rather than a musical.

Whatever it's label, it's a bloody good film and stands the test of time.

Love Quadrophenia but I wouldn't class it as a musical

Definitely not a musical, may as well say Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, in fact anything with a soundtrack is a musical.

Worth throwing in some film theory basics here! Diagetic vs. Non-diagetic music:

Diagetic sound in a film is that which is heard by or audible to the characters in the movie. Whether it's the sound of someone knocking, talking or sneezing. In terms of music for instance, Summer Nights is diagetic as the characters of Grease can hear it.

Non-diagetic sound is that designed for only the audience to hear. Narration, orchestral score, montage music etc. For instance, The Who music that plays over the top in Quadrophenia, or most of Trainspotting (just not the nightclub scene).

Rocky III makes me laugh, because they unveil a statue of Balboa with an orchestra playing the Rocky theme tune. The song went from non-diagetic to diagetic in that scene, which is hilariously ridiculous.

Watched Hacksaw Ridge - enjoyed it, WW2 is my film genre, so I was always gonna enjoy it, I knew the story from years ago, excellent battle scenes, however a little far fetched in places, Hollywood just cant help themselves can they?? 6/10
Saw Live by Night (Ben Affleck) - 1920's gangster type, prohibition etc, was ok 5/10.

RE WW2 films, There is a independent British film company making a film about Pegasus Bridge, Ive been following the making on FB, its gonna be good, accurate and about us Brits in the war not the bloody Yanks. If you dont know the true story of the raid on Pegasus Bridge just before the start of D-Day, google will tell you.
Should be out later this year.
Also 'Dunkirk' is due for release in July, its got some cracking big names in it and will be a winner, I hope. More Brits in WW2....!

Dunkirk should be good as Christopher Nolan is directing and isnt a fan of CGi, the trailer I've seen doesnt look bad either.

Viewing figures will surely go in One Direction as well with Harry Styles in it.

Edit: Cheers for the heads up about the Pegasus Bridge film, like yourself WW2 is one of my favourite genres

HaHa, well the names I am thinking of are Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh.
BUT if Styles helps youngsters revisit the history of WW2, and understand it, then I'm all for it.
Incidentally the PS4 game Battlefield 1 has opened the avenues for young people to look into the history of WW1, which is a good thing.

Just hope Nolan isn't stupid enough to have Styles killed in the film

Hoards of female fans went mental at Gabby Agbonlahor after he injured Tomlinson in a charity match a few years ago.

Watched Gold last night on the Kodi . Quite enjoyed it.
  • Lego Batman movie, erm a great film for kids.....
  • No reviews on Fifty Shades Darker?
  • Watched Battle For Sevastopol, wow, what an amazing story set in world war 2 about a female Ukrainian sniper who kills over over 300 soldiers, based on a true story, it does have subtitles for most of the film , but if you can get your head past that, it's very good.

Watched manchester by the sea last night. Very harrowing and depressing, but brilliantly done. Never rated either of the afflecks but casey affleck's performance is absolutely brilliant and well deserving of an oscar. Writing and direction is fantastic, but i agree with kermode's only criticism is that michelle williams needed to be in it more. All the performances were brilliantly real. Definitely recommend if you're looking for something really depressing and moving.

We took our boys (6&3) to see this on Sunday and I enjoyed it more than them.

My first visit to the cinema since Four Weddings and Funeral.

Okay, I admit it. As part of a terrible bit of negotiating on my part, and my wife's stroppy insistence that it wasn't worth getting a divorce over, I went to see

    FIFTY SHADES DULLER

last night. To add insult to injury, we went early, so I was prevented from following the Oldham updates on the mobile, which would have been better. Baically, everything you may have heard to the detriment of this film is true. The plot line is wispy to the point of invisibility, there was no spark, no excitement, no sudden twists and no real reason to watch it. Even the couple of edgy moments including a helicopter crash, a loopy ex girlfriend weilding a gun, and another dodgy ex weilding bad manners and implausibilty were dulled down to keep the pulse sedate and the imagination comatose. It takes a real genius to make sex so dull. I'm guessing there is a type of middle aged ladies who might get some sort of kinky thrill out of the sex scenes. For me it was tiresome and repetetive, and Mrs Shabby's idea that it might act as a stimulant was wide of the mark - I needed a Magennis hattrick last night, not some teen sex drivel written by morons. At least Trainspotting 2 hasn't arrived in Spain yet, which would have been infuriating to miss in favor of this. There was little memorable, but I'll offer the following dialogue as being amusingly daft.

Him:- I never knew my biological mother. She was a crack addict, and she died when I was four years old.

Her:- That's terrible. Why didn't you tell me about it?

Him:- I did. You were asleep.

  • that dialogue is brilliant ken.

saw Nocturnal Animals yesterday. Really enjoyed it. a smart way to approach the subject of revenge.

I pretty much agree. The inner story (the desert bit) was absorbing, but I didn't like any of the characters, so I didn't really care what happened to them, especially in the outer story.
Seen so many better film lately id almost forgotten that one.

Really looking forward to Toni Erdmann.

Not new by any means but I watched Upstream Color, from circa 2013......Critically acclaimed and shot for just $50.000...I had to read the plot in Wiki to understand it otherwise it would have been a 3/10 just for the photography. 4/10 with the aid of Wiki.

Also watched Blue Jay from 2016. Strange little love story really but worth watching for the atmospheric photography all in black and white 5/10

Scrolling back through here, I can't see any comments on Passengers. (Sorry if I missed your comments.)
    Any thoughts on this?

Ladyromford and I quite liked it. Yes, Jennifer Lawrence looks spectacularly and ridiculously good for someone living in virtual isolation in space, but I can live with that.
I felt like it was a pretty good story and there are more questions and possibilities that they could have covered, but all in all it wasn't bad. Not the best film I've ever seen, but pretty good.
