Belle and Sebastian are a treasure trove of great lyrics. "My wondering days are over" has several

    Springsteen, Thunder Road:

You can hide neath the covers and study your pain,

Make crosses from your lovers, throw roses in the rain

Waste your summers praying in vain, for a saviour to rise from these streets

Agree on that choice - you could make a list with just Dylan lyrics alone - and Cohen.

Beatles had a few - In my Life, Blackbird ......

    Rush - Freewill

    Springsteen - No Surrender

Lots of Floyd as Golfie says.

Impossible to list as others just stream into your mind - there are tracks you like for melody, instrumental arrangement, the big drums of Bonzo, the slow hand of God, riffs, baseline and so on. On the other hand, a track could be shit but the lyrics the highest form of prose.

    Another Rush fan here.

Closer to the heart and Trees show what a fantastic lyricist Neal Peart is.

But my favourite is from Queen. "Told my girlfriend I had to forget her. Rather buy me a new carburettor".

    Priorities.

We watched him drink his pain away a little at a time
But he never could get drunk enough to get her off his mind,
    Until the night,
He put that bottle to his head and pulled the trigger
And finally drank away her memory

John Otway: "Beware of the flowers because I'm sure they're gonna get you, yeah." Voted 7th greatest lyric of all time in 1999 . I'm sure the voting wasn't rigged by Otway fans.

For reasons unknown I was always drawn to those slightly nonsensical words that may have some deep, hidden meaning.

I loved the album Close to the Edge, also Leonard Cohen’s stuff, especially ‘Take this Waltz and Jimi Hendrix’s Wind Cries Mary. Lets face it, if the traffic lights turn a blue tomorrow, we’re all gonna have their emptiness shine on our beds.

I no longer look for hidden meaning, mystery or intrigue. Age has bought acceptance - or maybe that’s just fatigue … Hey that sounds like a song, where’s my guitar?

America For Beginners Latin Quarter - Regan era I think

What's keeping the White House white
Is it chalk, is it fog, is it fear?
Are they staying up most of the night
And sending somebody out for a beer?
    Is it bed-time for Bonzo?
Is it time for a change?
    Is it flavour-free TV dinners?
It's a hard thing to take, when they make a mistake
