    Broad 2 for 11 from 9 overs.
    Bowling superb.

    Now 10-5-11-2

Whatever you feel about the quota system, Bavuma is there on merit. Lovely player

Anderson gets the breakthrough, after a stand of 99

Rabada's just protecting de Kock. Sounds sensible to me.

Rabada has been banned from the second Test for swearing at Ben Stokes.

Blimey, I don't recall such a ban before, especially as I'm sure there has been plenty of "fruity" language in previous matches...

you would think that the whole Oz team would have been banned in the 90's.

It seems that it's a cumulative thing, rather than just this one incident

90's? How about the 70's when the likes of I Chappell, Thommo, Lillee and Marsh invented modern sledging?

Have to say that South African batting performance was just about as boring as it gets.....no flair or sense of purpose about it from start to,finish.

De Kock might change that when he gets in.

Except when Dawson was bowling - they had a successful plan to hit him out of the attack. Didn't see Moeen coming though :)

Very sensible batting from Bavuma and De Bruyn though given the situation.

Not sure if we will see Dawson or Gary "Graeme Hick" Ballance at Trent Bridge

I really do not understand Dawson getting picked. He is not a good enough batsman or bowler at Test Match level. I know Adil Rashid divides opinion, he bowls the odd four ball, but he is a wicket taker. Especially to the lower order. He can also bat a bit. I think the selectors picking Dawson and Ballance is too conservative.

Agree. Dawson is a bit too Ashley Giles for my liking

Dawson, peeved at the entire internet wishing he wasn't there, gets a wicket. Moeen, peeved that Dawson got a wicket*, gets a wicket next over :D

*just kidding - I'm sure he was genuinely thrilled for him #nicemoeen

Stokes is one point away from a ban as well, until October 2018. I can't see him lasting that long without doing something!

You mean, reliable lower order batsman and Ashes winning spinner?

De kock gets his 50 in 36 balls, but out soon afterwards. 314-8

Reckon Stokes could have easily made it as a pro goalie

All out for 361, an England lead of 97

Whether Dawson was the right choice or not, it certainly seems that England made the correct choice in picking 2 spinners

80-0 off 34 overs. With the snail at 3 there's going to be lots of boring times watching us bat. Oh for the days of Strauss and Trescothick.

    Ha Jennings out 80-1
  • This is so slow. We need to punish them only have 2 fast bowlers...yet we are plodding along. Send in Stoakes!

The way we're going you'd think we were batting to save the test. Should've been going for it to try and put them out of it and give us at least 4 sessions to bowl them out.

England are batting slowly and cautiously to
    a) make sure tomorrow (when I'm going) is the exciting day when Stokes, Moeen etc can smack the ball around
    b) ensure a 5th day on Monday, which I quite fancy going along to!

Think it's sensible to ensure you're 350 ish ahead and then go for it tomorrow afternoon. No huge rush to put South Africa back in before tea tomorrow IMO.
