Enjoyed it a lot. As others have said, it was all just setting up the rest of the series but built the tension nicely and had some good lines in it.

The Ed Sheeran thing was a misstep for me. Quite apart from the fact I'm not his biggest fan and he is bloody everywhere anyway at the moment, GoT does not need to stoop to the level of celebrity cameos. The whole scene was a bit cheesy but I understand why it was in there, there are, however, plenty of jobbing actors out there who can hold a note who could have done what he did without having to jar the narrative by sticking someone so incongruous in there.

Sigur Ros were in the Joffrey/Marjorie wedding scene. And Coldplay (or at least Will and Guy I think it was) were in the Red Wedding scene. I think Of Monsters and Men were in an episode in last season. Ed Sheeran had a lot more time smilling right at the camera in the main shot, but they've done this sort of things before.
All substantially less recognisable as well. If you showed me a picture of Sigur Ros and OM&M I wouldn't know who they are, and I have seen OM&M live.

Without to much detail...score the episode out of 10?

    6/10

-2.5 for having ed Sheeran anywhere near it.

    7.5/10 for me

Good episode, not one of the GOT greats but episode 1 of a new season isn't going to be.

Sheeran took me out of the scene so for that reason I didn't like it one bit!

Someone called it filler earlier I think - there hasn't been any filler in Thrones for a long time. But there was an awful lot of setting up. They literally painted a map and told the audience where everybody was and who they hated!

Can't wait to see some of these characters colliding. Especially now Dany is fully involved.

Hate these celebrity cameos. Been doing it ever since Sean Bean was shoehorned into the first season.

Ed Sheeran left me wanting to punch the TV screen.

    WTF was that all about?

    Whoosh.

Although to be fair Sean Bean is one of the only actors who was really well known (to the point where nearly every other actor is known first for Game of Thrones at this point whereas his other roles are definitely more famous) to play a main character. At least other cameos have been fairly low-key. Ed Sheeran did definitely take you out of the scene, and made worse by the fact it was leaked months ago he was getting a cameo, and then on the Guardian's front page on their website today. Would have been better if he was just out of focus whilst he was singing then he went off for a piss before Arya got off her horse.

    The opening scene was brilliant.

    Euron was funny.

    Sansa was a cow.

The Brotherhood without Banners bit was the best bit though.

Thought it was a bit slow, but that is to be expected - it will get pretty exciting over the course of the season.

P.s I didn't think Sheeran's cameo was that bad, but I guess it's popular to hate on him at the moment.

Great episode, feels like it will kick off at any point and a main character will get bumped off!

Ed Sheeran is fine. Sound musician and the like. But it was literally just Ed Sheeran in a Lannister costume singing an Ed Sheeran-esque song. And he was very much in frame for most of the scene just looking like Ed Sheeran. Not his fault that's how the director decided to play out the scene but it very much breaks the fourth wall. At least Jim Broadbent had make-up and put on a slightly different accent (in stark contrast to his normal dithering tone, he was quite stoic).

    Sansa was a cow.

I thought Jon was being unnecessarily stupid. As though they need to strike up a conflict between him, Sansa and Littlefinger and the easiest way was to make him be a bit of a twat when Sansa offers advice.

The scene on the castle walls was a bit much in that regard. "Why is he still here?" - "Because the plot needs him to be."

The problem wasn't that it was Ed Sheeran per say, problem was that it was a very famous recognizable person, not known for acting, in a bit part roll, you stopped thinking about the story for a moment and were thinking - wtf is Ed Sheeran doing in this?

    It just jarred, is all.

He's an ugly annoying cunt who sings annoying as fuck songs about drinking in country lanes and singing about smoking hand rolled cigerettes as if he ever did any of those things.

He's cringe on legs. The fact he's a mega star makes me question the reality I live in as a simulated reality created by a futuristic sweaty ginger bloke called ed Sheeran from the year 3214 who thought "uh I wonder if I was a pop star in 2017 huh uh".

Anyway.. back to game of thrones.. probably one of my favourite exposition episodes, once again the hound steals the show. Hope he's in it til the end.

I think the last ever scene will be the hound sitting on the iron throne looking around the ground hall `C@@ts`

    My random thoughts:

Getting more and more convinced Jamie is going to kill cersei

The hound will die fighting the white walkers, alongside the wildlings

Jorah will help Sam get the dragonglass

    Strong first episode. Enjoyed it

Great seeing the white walkers again, and how Berric Dondarian's crew are gonna square up to them

So many strong characters and solid storylines now. Absolute respect to DB Weiss and David Benioff

They've taken what was it a fantasy literacy masterpiece and delivered a tv epic

I may be wrong, but I think that Ian Brown from 'The Stone Roses' was in the opening scene of one of the Harry Potter films, playing a punter in 'The Leaky Cauldron'.

100% just to shoehorn him in , totally pointless.

Brown was also one of the coppers in the fight scene in this is England 86.

He was indeed but he was doing what people should do in a cameo...saying little or nothing but still making sure you know who it is.

I don't think it was as Wun Wun died during the re-taking of winterfell.
