I would like to nominate Chris Patten for Brexit quote of the Day award. And to make sure I win, I've got a hat-trick of them...

And he's got a fourth! Chris Patten is on fire! Extraordinary, Jeff!

Did you hear him on Today earlier @PragueAddick . Did his best to explain the practicalities of trying to negotiate a trade deal with a much bigger partner alone and as part of a huge trading block like...er...the one we are in already. His closing comment was that if you get into bed with an elephant you'll more than likely end up squashed. (Edit - just managed to open one of those tweets now quoting the same)PragueAddick said:I would like to nominate Chris Patten for Brexit quote of the Day award. Not that he would know anything about doing deals with the Chinese government or anything.5 -
I spent a good deal of time around Chris Patten and the fragrant Lavendar, and I would imagine he would be the archetypal target of venom and hate from the left wedge on here.
They were an unfailingly lovely, considerate couple in the few months I knew them so it's great he is getting some positive comments.2 -
I'm left of centre, and obviously disagreed with his politics as a Conservative, but have always liked him and, more importantly have felt that he is a very able man. He has the ability to make the best of difficult situations and has a breadth of experience that is sadly lacking in UK politics at the moment.A-R-T-H-U-R said:I spent a good deal of time around Chris Patten and the fragrant Lavendar, and I would imagine he would be the archetypal target of venom and hate from the left wedge on here.

He made a significant contribution to improving matters in Northern Ireland and, it has to be said, anyone that I know over here that had dealings with him, have absolutely agreed with your interpretation of the man.9 -
Think supergob o'briens mouth certainly matched all of the above and apparently still at it.Bournemouth Addick said:
Have you priced up the value of all those front pages in the Mail, the Sun, the Telegraph, the Express, etc. now then? What about the endless opinion pieces by the likes of Littlejohn spouting nonsense about the EU for decades, how much was that promotion of Leave worth?Southbank said:

He’s probably not even been consulted for his experience. The gung ho brexit politicians simply believe that because we’re Britain that’s enough. Very naive level of arroganceBournemouth Addick said:

- never done a proper job in his life, unless you think editing a tiny right wing weekly mag is such.
- Insulted individuals, ethnic groups and countries on a regular basis since he arrived in Parliament
- wasted millions of pounds of YOUR money on the Garden Bridge, those buses, and the Olympic Stadium
- in the case of the Stadium pushed through and signed off on a deal which threatens the commercial health of YOUR football club
I think I'd choose a chocolate fire guard, if using it ensured that Boris Johnson retired from politics and focused on TV game shows.
Next up, Dr Liam Fox....

I'm unlikely to agree with a lot of the views held by politicians such as Chris Patten, Ken Clarke or Michael Hesseltine. Not all their views though, some I would probably share tbh, and certainly around the massive mistake that is leaving the EU. What they have in common though is they are serious politicians worthy of listening to even if I disagree. Even Dominic Lawson is worth considering the views of, if only to discount them!NornIrishAddick said:

Equally I'm unlikely to agree with every utterance of George Galloway, Dennis Skinner or Corbyn himself.
Apropos of not very much and well before he was anywhere near parliament but I once had a cuppa with Philip Hammond in my mum and dad's front room. Nice enough bloke, not much in common with me or my family and I've agreed with very little he's said since getting elected. But he's clearly aware of what a colossal feck up awaits us in the future.
The fact that I disagree with a lot of these politicians stance on some, probably most, things and agree on others, specifically Brexit in this case, is exactly as it should be in my book.3 -

Well, as that particular cosy little job was Governor of Hong Kong, overseeing the handover to China, I'm not really certain that staying there was up to him, nor, necessarily whether it was either a cosy or, indeed, a little job.Chippycafc said:

I would have thought that his views are as relevant as anyone else's, and possibly more relevant than most, which is why, perhaps, the news media asked him for his opinion.
He is familiar with the issues in Northern Ireland, has experience of working in Westminster and Brussels, and has at least a passing knowledge (from when he was the UK's EU Commissioner, responsible for External Affairs) of how international negotiations work, and frequently don't....6 -

If you love Chris Patten so much plus as he knows about Irish issues, perhaps you can ask him to trundle down to Dublin and ask why they haven't removed any Russian diplomats yet. I mean they are our "friends" arnt they. Considering countries the other side of the world have done so.Chizz said:
