  • I’ve got to the stage now where I wish the Aussie’s would just pull out, if it’s funding then they would be no good anyway. Another year of Roland losing money & the value of the club going down even more would serve the old fool right.

His fantasies get worse ... he invented the concept of YouTube first.

  • Yes we get it, you’re a f*cking visionary
  • Does anyone else, when reading RD's words, think of Catweazle?

  • Is he really claiming to have invented YouTube before it’s time?

I know the feeling, I invented the Apple Watch in 1973 but couldn’t get it to sell at all - now they shift millions, I’m totally ahead of the curve.

If Charlton get promoted to the premier league, a decade after he’s sold us, he’ll take credit for that too.
  • Sorry, my thoughts are with England today. Not letting the old fart distract me. Does seem he has actually admitted to football being a mistake.
  • I have invented teleportation and the elixir of youth in case a anybody claims the credit in the future.
It's just the start up funding I'm struggling with.

  • Oi oi Roland, I invented YouTube and teleportation before you. Don’t be an arsehole about it.

I’ll give you the minimum wage chat though, always thought that wa one of your better ones, genuinely slightly ahead of your time. You ain’t no Elon musk though.

Duchatelet: 'Use success of the Rode Duivels to reinvent Belgium.

Of all times it is during the World Cup Football, that he downsizes his fooballimperium. Because he rather invests in society problems. Breakfast with De Tijd.

What is a human being? Only an upgraded animal. So people make mistakes. I, like everybody. That is why you have to shield yourself emotionally when people write or say something to hurt you. How? I just wonder what their problem is.

    Breakfast with De Tijd

Sint-Truiden, 8 am, in Grand Café Stayen.

De question was how Roland Duchaetelet (71), a succesfull businessman, deals with reactions to the man. For instance of the supporters of football club Charlton Athletic, who came to Sint-Truiden to fund a political party. A name they already had: ROT: Roland Out Today. "I never had sleepless nights over it".

The past time has passed, even if we are sitting having breakfast at 8 am in the Grand Cafë under the stadium of STVV. Last week it was written in de paper that Duchaetelet would sell Charlton Athletic. The deal is not done yet, but over a roll with egg and a slice of pineapple, he says: "Football doesn't suit me very well. It is a different world that is not mine".

This sounds strange coming from somebody who has been in that world for over twenty years, as sponsor and later owneer of STVV, then of Standard, Charlton, Carl Zeiss Jena from Germany and the Spanish Alcorcon. "Today you see that more networks of clubs arise like at Manchester City, Watford and Red Bull. That lies more in the line of internationalization of businesses. But when I did it, I was told I was mad. Maybe I didn't make the point of it clear enough, that's possible.

The coffee didn't get a chance to get cold, this early in the conversation it already seems like a confession of a mistake. "Gosh, I have made many mistakes in my life. That's how it goes. Long time ago I started TV locally. That was too early and I did it in the wrong market. Years later YouTube came with an idential concept. But on time. And in a much bigger market. This country and our languagearea were too small for something as innovative as that.

    At the crib Melexis

A dribble, a throughballpass, an assist: once Duchatelet himself played football at White Star Woluwe, the quick acceleration has stuck in the body and mind of the man that thirty years ago - together with Froncoise Chombard and Rudi Dewinter - stood at the crib of Melexis and later became politically active in Vivant and Open VLD.

He doesn't need much to make a step over. From football to economy to politics. The Flemish government still doesn't realize that. It still obligates companies to draft documents in Dutch. We have a company that is on the stockmarket in Paris, of the big shareholders nobody speaks Dutch, but still everything has to be prepared in Dutch. That is just absurd.

This indicates little vision, he thinks. Examples come tumbling. "Flanders exists almost fifty years, but still taxes are taken that cost more than they bring. They then have created another level of board, without cancelling the provinces. Every citizen with common sense therefore has to vote for N-VA at the next provincial elections. Because they are the only party that wants to cancel the provinces.

Except in Limburg, everybody there seems to want to keep the province. "But Limburg is a catastrophe", says the man that lives partly in Antwerp and partly in Limburg."This complex (Stayen, the footballstadium, with hotel and congressrooms, red.) has to compete with hotels that are sponsored by the province of Limburg: Alden Biesen, Maasmechelen Village, C-Mine, etc. Once I asked the governor why he competed against the company-owners like that. "Because there aren't enough of them in Limburg like you" his answer was. Ah well."

But he wants to get rid of the provinces. Of course I will vote N-VA for the provincial elections. Today you have to vote tactically. Nationally of course I vote Open VLD. Then you would be mad to vote the N-VA, bacause then you choose for the F-35-fighterplanes, which would be the biggest stupidty: spending so much money on something that is totally passed it. That is the same as buying a videorecorder now. Engineers who now develop new fighterplanes, would never put a human being in it. I don't understand that somebody as intelligent as Bart De Wever doesn't understand that.

    Basic income

He was councillor himself in Sint-Truiden and a senator for seven years. Did the politic become a disappointment? No, I try to see the postivity of the experience. You learn a lot, you can talk about a lot. The richness is more important than all other forms of wealth.

Is frustration a better word? The taxshift, according to Duchatelet, comes straight from the Vivant-program. Just like the tax on financial actions. Only the basic income is still missing. In Silicon Valley a lot of people now are in favour of that. Richard Branson is in favour. But the politic is afraid.

The explanation is long. He starts at migrationproblematic. The difference with fifty years ago is that migrants here found work then and that way contributed to the social security. Today 45 percent of the people are put to work by the government directly or indirectly. Their taxes are means of the government itself, they do not contribute to anything. There are no jobs left for migrants that can carry taxes so they do not have an added value economically. That sounds hard, but in the present thinkingworld of politicians and economists it is no different. Because there are no jobs for these people, we will have to close the borders.

This is how we arrive at the basic income, his favourite subject. If there is not enough work, you will have to make certain that there still is an income. Politicians shouldn't say anymore\: jobs, jobs. They have to say: income, income. Reduce your social security further, like the N-VA wants, then people cannot shop, go to football or to a restaurant. The economy will collapse. At 200 euro a onth till the age of 17, 550 euro for people people between 18 and 25, 750 euro till 65 and 1,300 euro per months afterwards, you will get there. That basic income is a part of the present wages or social benefits. So it won't come on top of the present wages, like some imagine. The social security is a house that exists for seventy years, but has no insulation has no double glazing. At the most a larger kitchen was added. You should have to break it down totally and build a new house: based on the basic income.

Clearly with a slice of pineapple what we've all been missing out on for breakfast making do with a full English instead.

No idea, but it costs upwards of £30 in some restaurants...

He also was the first person ever to slice bread.

Wikipedia suggests that a pistolet is a small crusty roll, a Brussels delicacy.

Pinterest has a picture that makes it seem as if a pistolet of egg is a fancy hot egg roll, with the egg being poached in the roll (a cut having been made in the top) with cherry tomatoes and basil.

  • This deal has always been about the price, Roland never understood the Ex Directors loans needed clearing if he was going to find a real buyer.
Until he pays them off no buyer with a Business brain will buy the Club.
Aussies as has been mentioned before do not have funds.
    Over to you Roland.

So it's all about the price?

    Or it's the director's loans?

Or it that the Aussies don't have the funds?

    Which one @Davidsmith ?
All three, price has never included Directors Loans from Roland's perspective, but buyers want the charges removed and so that is a reduction in price to Roland, thus stalemate.
Aussies apparently from multiple sources are cash short .

So not "all about the price" then.
  • Just seems like there are too many obstacles to overcome for this takeover to go through . Looks like we're stuck with RD for a while yet sadly .
  • In this game of poker the Aussies have by far the best hand. Their only concern might be if another player joins the table. We wait for RD to fold. Being a stubborn old git he will probably hang on for a while yet, which in effect means the team/club will not be properly looked after.

Keohane is all over this Pistolet of Egg business. If he can crack it, it's PhD level for him.
  • In this game of poker the Aussies have by far the best hand.

The fans have the worst hand. We keep being dealt 7-2 off-suit.
  • There is nothing simple about this football club that's for sure.

Got a sneaky feeling RD will be with us for some time yet.
