DONE DEAL | Charlton sign Josh Cullen on loan from West Ham United

Charlton Athletic are delighted to welcome Josh Cullen to The Valley on a season-long loan deal from West Ham United.

Lee Bowyer has been chasing the highly-rated 22-year-old midfielder for much of the summer and he becomes the caretaker manager’s fifth signing signing of the summer.

Cullen played 12 games on loan in the Championship at Bolton Wanderers last season and also played two Premier League games for his parent club. The Republic of Ireland Under 21 international was also a key part of the successful 2016/17 Bradford City team.

Bowyer was in a particularly good mood when talking about the signing this morning. He said: “This is one that we thought was going to be out of our reach to be honest. He’s a very good player, good experience in this league and went to the Championship last season so we thought he was going to be out of our reach. We had to just hang in there and bide our time and thankfully he’s chosen to come to us. I think he’s a great addition to the squad. He’s a very good player in and out of possession so he’ll be a good addition for us. I’ve always said I only want players that improve us, and he improves us.”

Cullen himself said the size of the club attracted him and explained the manager was an important factor too. He said: “Lee Bowyer was a central midfielder like myself so I felt that coming here would help me learn and develop myself as a player under a manager with the experience that he had with the qualities he had as a player as well. I’m really happy to be here and can’t wait to get started.”

Cullen will see some familiar faces around the training ground in his first session this morning having played with Darren Pratley at Bolton, Billy Clarke and Mark Marshall at Bradford and Lewis Page at West Ham.

He said: “I spoke to a couple of them. I’m good mates with Lew (Page), we’ve been playing with each other since we were nine or ten years old so it’s funny how football works and you end up at another club together. It’s good to see a few familiar faces and I’m sure the rest of the lads are good lads as well.”

Head of Recruitment Steve Gallen, who has been influential in all five of the signings so far, was also in good spirits.

He said: “It’s good to get him. He’s a good football player Josh, we’ve known that for a while. I’ve been up to West Ham quite a lot over the summer, we’ve been chasing him down all the way through. It’s come late, we’d have much preferred it sooner, of course but you always have to respect the parent club and I have to say a big thank you to West Ham for letting us have him.

“He’s a good player and sometimes you have to wait for good players. We’ve had the options to have other players in the building earlier but you have to be a bit patient. At the end of it we’re really pleased to get a good footballer through the door.

“He’s a good football player, can handle the ball. He’ll come and get it off the back four and pop it around and I think probably that’s something we’ve just missed since Jake (Forster-Caskey) got injured.”

The full interviews with Bowyer, Cullen and Gallen will be available on Valley Pass later today.

So what is his deal? Attacking midfielder? Box to box a la JFC?

For Bradford i believe he played more attacking midfield, although he only got 1 goal for them.
  • Nice to see its a season long loan... Bloody relieved to see it getting over the line

Now we'll see what all the fuss was about if there was any

From what I can work out he is a player who will sit a little deeper in a midfield 3 spraying the ball about, not the number 10, not the "destroyer" but more like the JFC role last season. Lack of goals hints at this, but JFC had a knack of arriving in the box to score a goal or two whereas Cullen won't offer that. Hoping he has a productive season with us and what with Reeves and Clarke eventually coming back we'll have a strong contingent of players in midfield.

Still need a winger/striker and IMO a left back/wing back in case Page breaks down

Very good signing for this level, really pleased. So well done to all involved.

If we can get in another one, possibly two but that is hugely unlikely, would be great. Ward and O’Kane please, thanks.

But otherwise, welcome Josh, look forward to seeing him in midfield.

Got a family friend who is a scout at Brighton (previously Forest and Villa). Just asked him and he said:

“Small, but good technical player, was at Bradford I think on loan always liked him, not sure he's Premiership but do you a turn.

Not seen recently but over the years always liked him”
  • Seems a very good signing to me, hopefully he can show us what he's rumoured to be capable of on the pitch. Good luck to him.

Some positive news amongst all the other shit. On paper, a good signing. One more in and that would be satisfactory.

Yeah the little bit I've seen of him I like him. About as close to a JFC replacement as we're likely to get. Not as good or rounded, but still a good young ball playing midfield. Exactly what we need, should provide some assurance in possession and can hopefully pick a pass, the two things this squad needs more than anything (apart from players getting fit) right now.

Also, he strikes me as the type we might be able to sign permanently if he does well for us so I think it's both a good short term and potentially long term move.

I think Steve Gallen deserves a mention here (in addition to Bowyer). From what we've seen so far of Bielik he looks like a good signing, Steer is a very good signing at this level, as are Pratley and Taylor who are admittedly more known quantities. But Gallen seems to have a really good eye for a player and apart from Kaikai and Marshall*, both of whom had played and scored at this level before, I'd say all of our signings since he joined have been a success to varying degrees. And that despite having little to no budget.

*There was also Dodoo but I seem to recall that being a case of an agent ringing the club up and let's be honest it was an 11th hour signing out of desperation.

I think he is a decent signing and will offer more than JFC EDIT FOR THE PEDANTS does when fit.

Sounds like a good signing, just hope his tough tackling doesn't get him injured, otherwise he'll end up being a water carrier.

he looks a very mature and 'together' 22 year old .. let's hope that looks are not deceptive ..
Cullen says that he's good pals with Lew Page. Page has improved this season so far, so let's hope the two mates can cajole one another to give it a right good go
