    6.45PM           -          5SPIKE           -            U-571
    Elf is on again!
Being on free-to-air, it's the National Elf Service.
  • Didn't get to comment on yesterday's but True Grit is quite a good film.  However, it's one of those remakes where you have to ask, what was the point other than to make money.  What stood out in both versions, though, were the performances of the young women.
  • So, on to today's selections.

Toy Story 3 - top, top film.

Elf - haven't seen it but caught a bit on Kermode's programme last night to will make an effort to watch or record it.

Home Alone - haven't seen it, don't want to see it.

    Unforgiven - excellent performances.

Made in Dagenham - like the lesbians and gays support the miners film, Pride, it's a real feel-good film.

U-571 - how the septics won the war.  Again.

I have a feeling ‘The Tiger That Came To Tea’ on Channel 4 at 7.30pm could be a bit of a dark horse.

The Alamo I recall watching as a kid. That’s on today. I liked Richard Widmark in that. Looking forward to watching that again.

I would also like to add that I think it’s a disgrace that there hasn’t been a single airing of Chas and Dave’s Christmas Knees Up this year.

Should be on repeat every day in December.

I think you’ll find it’s more of a large, striped cat.

Elf, it's a game of two halves.
I love the first hour and a bit, but then it turns to mush.

I am biased as one of the producers is a mate of mine (and one of the artists too). But I thought it was great.

Binge watched "A Christmas Carol" last night too - also brilliant.

Erm sorry to disappoint you, but. I think it’s about a tiger.

I was really late to the party with Slumdog but it's a brilliant film. Danny Boyle is a really really good director don't think I've disliked any of his films

Just out of interest, who else found the questions in Slumdog Millionaire easy?  I wondered if they just happened to be things I knew or if most people got them all.

It’s good to see you aren’t recommending anything around 3pm.

Skyfall is the best Craig Bond for me.

Will make an effort to settle down for Paddington 2.

Watched The Longest Day last night for the first time in about 40 years. Surprisingly gripping given the ham acting, 60 year old SFX and the fact that the ending wasn’t much of a surprise!  It’s a loooong film.

Skyfall... not a big Bond fan but this is excellent

I get why people like Skyfall, I really do. I enjoy watching it even though I have major problems with it. It’s pretty (Deakins’ films always are) and plays to the Bond crowd.

But it also undid the good work that Casino Royale achieved. It reverted Bond back to silliness after Royale had rebooted him into a ‘realistic’, post-Bourne world. Quantum of Solace was poorly executed, but at least it continued what Royale had started. When it got a kicking the Broccolis decided to go back to pre-reboot Bond. And worse than that, the plot doesn’t make a lick of sense. Plot holes and contrivances (he dies in the opening scene but that’s inexplicably ignored, the timing of the escape and that ludicrous train moment) and - crucially - Bond fails miserably in his only two tasks - get the hard drive back and don’t let M die.

But nobody minds. They forget about the list and M was old. It’s ridiculous! But it looks good so...

  • I liked Cowboys and Aliens as well! Beginning to understand a little bit more about myself reading this thread....
