  • A good chance we'll see Sam Field again (if the season resumes)
  • Is that legally possible if individuals dont want their contracts extended?

Seems that football is outside of all norms. But we have known that for years of course...
  • This is a sensible move.  And it paves the way for all footballers to be able to agree a pay holiday, ie they're paid less for the next three months (say) and have their salary increased proportionally after June.
  • I posted the below a couple of weeks ago in the “ending season early” thread.
Sounds like FIFA have indeed tried to go a similar route to that of the Portuguese league.

Re contracts, obviously an incredibly awkward situation but I was listening to Andy Brassell the other day talking about the Portuguese league.

They have, in the leagues rules something along the lines of, if a season is delayed from being completed all contracts can be unilaterally extended until such a time that the league is complete, then players become free agents.

Obviously it would take some flexibility from all parties but I wonder if the FA could change registration windows. For example if the league is to be completed in July/August, change the registration/transfer window to September/October for 1 season.
So any player out of contract in June can’t sign for a new club until September anyway, even if the wanted to. Then make it easy for players to extend current contracts for 3 months.
lots of legal issues and rule changes required but there is no perfect solution.
  • Bet any Footballers who don't agree would face the prospect of being released at the end of their current deals.

Because FIFA havent opened a transfer window the players cant sign for another club so wont receive a wage

It would take a brave player to play that sort of roulette when there may be no sign of this all ending

Exactly why any plans to extend players contracts will have to revolve around a delayed transfer/registration window. Without an open window no player can sign elsewhere even if they want to
  • I can see a few lawyers oiling the draw of their cash tills.

  • Works both ways. Players who want to leave or have something lined up will still want to go.

Players we want to leave will be getting paid a couple of months more.
  • Scrap that, it works against the clubs, players who want to leave will leave and we're stuck with the ones we don't want.

    Bit early apologies.
  • I don't see how you can enforce it though, unless it is in the terms and conditions of thier contacts. You can't force people to accept paid work can you?  You can only sanction them for not doing so.

But then if you put a 3rd transfer window in you totally invalidate the current season.

  • With this is being set up await the next announcement of the season for all 4 divisions to be extended accordingly.
  • It seems to me that the football authorities really want the season to come to a national conclusion & will do everything in their power to see that it does, even if it means extending contracts, playing behind closed doors or playing in mid July when the temperature could be in the 90's. No final decisions will he made for some weeks yet.
  • So we have tennis cancelling Wimbledon in July, the golf open in July, cricket talking about not starting until August, but football living in a different world. Once the lockdown starts to ease sport will be well down the list of things to be allowed to get back to action.

Just make it all behind closed doors, but with video footage.

    Job done.

the difference is the tennis, golf & cricket is not halfway through a season as football is. It easy to cancel something that hasn't started yet.

And tennis and golf (and indeed the Olympics) are a series of individual events rather than a 9 month league

It does seem very weird and rather premature to see the players in Germany resuming training yesterday. Even if Germany has suffered far less than its neighbours, it's surely far too early for players to be getting together again, even in small and controlled groups?

You still need people to run the operation, it’s not just two teams of fellas and a ball. Coaching and medical staff, then film crews etc all this has to be organised so you’re looking at admin staff they have to be coordinated by a COO who in our case would designate someone else in case it goes wrong. 😉 Then if you’re playing a team from up north there’s hotels etc, coaches to book and security because please don’t suggest no one would turn to try and get in somehow.

  • Can football league clubs afford to pay all their out of contract players wages until august? Their biggest cost is player wages, would it not make more financial sense to get them off the books as soon as possible? Especially if you are a club with nothing to play for, no threat of relegation etc

If the season is extended and games resume in July/August then surely you aren't going to get many players wanting to leave at the end of June when they can't sign for another club or be paid by them until September.

Whether those reluctant players put in any effort is another matter though. If a player already had a move planned for the summer, he won't exactly be busting a gut for his old club

If the owners have all agreed not to 'poach' other club's players then the only recourse would probably be for agents/players desperate to move, to claim that there was a 'cartel' in operation that hindered free movement of labour. That might take months to get to court then any decision would be too late to affect the present situation. That would probably not stop players refusing new contracts after June 30th, making them unemployed and getting no pay. A few more Universal Credit claimants perhaps. Extremely unlikely.
  • If the players went back tomorrow, they are going to need a month/six weeks to get up to playing speed. It’s my belief it won’t happen, the premier league are just trying find a nice way to tell the bin dippers. 😉

"New dates for the transfer window - which had been moved back to 1 September in England - will be sanctioned by Fifa providing they fall between the two seasons ...."

Then goes on to say:   "....... with the organisation pledging to try to harmonise the dates as much as possible so clubs and leagues are not unfairly disrupted."

Couldn't you say that anyway though. Someone like Ziyech who signed for Chelsea in February, why would he try any less in July/August for Ajax than he would have done in March/April?

It's probably easier to maintain effort if you've been playing with team mates for 6 months already and have that team spirit, whereas if you then have 3 months off and then get dragged back to finish the last 10 games, maybe it'll be harder to motivate yourself, especially if playing in empty stadiums?

Yeah fair point. You would hope they have the professionalism, but I think we all know that's not in everyone.

It's a tough call to make but the Leagues have difficult decisions all around. I'd certainly hope the majority of players understand the circumstances and offer flexibility. We will see I guess!
