Named in the team of the tournament at the U17 Euro's 2 years ago, and played every game when we won the U17 World cup.
Let's not forget that for him to even be near the Chelsea first team squad when he only just turned 18 is a pretty good achievement given their record with young players. I do think the senior England call up is a bit too soon though.0 -

Disappointing to lose him but it makes Southgate's team selection easier. Kane up front, Sterling one side, Sancho the other. Hudson-Odoi as an impact sub late on.1

No Grealish is odd - presume as a few like Jordan Henderson, Maddison etc are missing we're trying a few new players out so it's the idea time to give Grealish a go too.

To be fair they are very different players. Phillips deserves his call-up basically because there isn't any other players in his role other than Dier and Henderson.Chris_from_Sidcup said:

It may just be me but i don't think the squad needs 3 defensive midfielders in it, especially when one of those positions could at least have been given to a left back.0 -

Ward-Prowse is just a dead-ball specialist anyway. Nothing special.3
