Social media for the most part is shit. Never done Twitter, Whats App or Instagram and although I still have an active Facebook page I haven’t been on it for nearly a year. Too many cranks and dickheads wanting to score points for my liking.

I guess it’s different because the watershed controls the content of all channels, I think. Whereas this is just BBC’s decision. I don’t think it’s gonna stop anyone having access to the original version with the word faggot in.

And why would we get to that stage with films, they already have age restrictions etc.

I honestly don’t think this is going anywhere mate, it’s not that deep.

It’s someone at the BBC stopping and thinking, maybe we should drop that line from the song as it might piss off a gay person, it was then more than likely discussed and then decided upon.

It's a complete non-story. One station has decided to play an edited version as is their right to do. That's it. That's literally it.
Other stations can play whatever version they want. People can buy/play whatever version they want. They can sing or not sing the word in question if they want to.

Kin joke in my opinion, protecting ‘people’ from these words, when my kids ask Alexa for Lil Nas and instead of Old Town Road they get some song with him singing about a Motherf*****r.

My kids are 11 and under. That shit that Amazon are promoting plus the stuff that my Son says the kids are listening to in his primary school, which is basically more sexual oriented lyrics, seems accepted by a large chunk of society.

Not lyrically, but you only have to see what Little Mix wear (for a young audience) to see parents either find these things acceptable or don’t even realise.

Meanwhile, an American rapper saying Pussy and flipping you over is fine but an Irish Folk Rock song with an offensive term isn’t?

I’ve gone through my life always trying not to offend people, so it’s not like I find offensiveness amusing. However, banning ‘art’ and wiping out history is not the way to go.

And yes, it is important that we don’t sanitise culture. It’s not an immediate concern as per Covid, but little things like this are the small granules of shutting views down, feeding cancel culture, causing bitterness and a more divided society.

It’s like Children, you’re on dodgy ground if you keep pandering to them.

Well it's my favourite Christmas song.

The fact that The Pogues were orignally called "Pogue Mahone" – the anglicisation of the Irish Gaelic póg mo thóin, meaning "kiss my arse" always makes me smile.

I sang this song as an arrangement in a choir in St Peter Mancroft Church in Norwich about 5 years ago. It's a fantastic anthem.

I was extolling it's virtue on social media last year and a bloke (gay) challenged me on the lyrics. He said he hates its use in the song. We had a reasonable adult conversation. He convinced me that the term "faggot" in the context of the song is offensive to many gay people.

I therefore agree with the radio edit.

Things change. We should respect that.

We don't sing all verses of the National Anthem such as the infamous 6th Verse which includes the following lines

"And like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush.
God save the Queen!"

I just asked Spotify and got the version with faggot in.

The version with faggot in is accepted by large chunks of society, it’s just BBC not playing that version just incase.

I don’t think many are offended by it, just people offended by the imaginary people offended.

Its not banned or wiped out like I said I just listened to it on Spotify. Literally just BBC playing a version without the word faggot in.

Bit different giving into your kid for having a tantrum than not saying the word faggot just in case you piss off a gay person.

Yes but yes if you don't sing that verse if the national anthem you're "rewriting history" a nonsensical phrase quickly replacing "Pc gone mad" as the meaningless cliche of choice.

I was gutted when Gary Glitter was banned by the BBC. Used to have his poster on my wall when I was growing up along with ones of Jimmy Saville and Jonathan King. At least they're still playing Michael Jackson.
