Fave Charlton Away Game (Excluding Sunderland @ Wembley)

Halifax away in the cup (was it the year we won league 1?). Midday kick off. Most of us still drink from night before as had to set off about 4am to get there. Remember half time they had cans of beer set up on a picnic table. Felt like we were at someone’s garden bbq instead of a game. Won 4-0 to put icing on the cake. 

So many games, not easy to remember.

Boro away in about 86. For various reasons. Mainly we ended up stranded in Redcar for 2 days with no money and a car we crashed into a sand dune.

Absolutely. We went there after the game for the night. Went to a club called Leo’s , had a row in there, my mate then drove the motor into the beach thinking he could drive through a sand dune. Blew 2 tyres up. Slept in the car whilst one of our lot went to the local nick and slept in the reception, then spent 2 days getting money wired to us and spending it on drink and then having to ring for more.  Bunked the train back and left my mates car up there. Got the car back after Hull away a few weeks later.

Port Vale on Easter Monday was good as well.  Free travel up I think 

we beat Norwich away in the night that season (at the start), and then again the season we won the Championship 99/00.  Mendonca hat trick in the 97 game, Hunt hat trick in the 99 game 

in the 99/00 we beat Wolves away 3-2 in Jan or Feb, part of the 12 wins a row.  A classic for me as it was yet another day off sixth form.  My dad drove up, with my uncle @The31YearMan.  We went over Putney bridge and out via m40.  About an hour or so away from Wolverhampton, we had to stop for petrol.  For some reason my dad put unleaded in the tank and it was a diesel car.   The panic set in and as we left the service station, the car got about 10 yards up the slip road before conking out.  RAC had to be called, of course they said there’s about a 2 hour wait.  @The31YearMan made the executive decision to call a cab company so that he and I could get to the game, it cost about £100 (my uncle also made a point of keeping this on the down low, as he didn’t want his wife to find out about the added expense), whilst we left my dad to wait for the RAC, in the hope he could make at least the second half. 

Beating Spurs 3-2 at White Hart Lane back in 2004 is the stand out one for me.

2-0 up at half time thanks to a Shaun Bartlett brace. He got himself sent off for handball in the second half after we went 3-0 up through Jerome Thomas, they fought back to 3-2 but we held on.

Remember the atmosphere being so good in the away end, we were right next to the spurs fans.

Just tried looking for the highlights but couldn't find them. Pretty sure it was this game when Bartlett scored that diving header, I was only a kid at the time so may be wrong.

Random game that sticks in my memory was a midweek 4-2 win at Walsall 99-2000 season? Its the only time I can recall going to a game knowing we were going to win, it was such a good season, we went 2-0 up fairly easily, they pulled one back and we literally went up the other end and scored again, this happened again in the second half, we owned them. It was quite brilliant to watch. 

There was a social club os the ground, very welcoming and the locals held a demo against their board, we all joined in, an excellent evening all round.

Residing, as this correspondent did back then, in NW Kent I had a clutch of Hammers drinking buddies, in sincere expectation of a facile home win they'd dared me and my Addick chum to join them for post match boozing/pisstaking in their usual haunt The Central.
I got a txt message at fulltime from Hammers mate suggesting that The Central would not be a sensible venue for we Charlton fans.
Unbeknownst to said Boleynites my expected compadré for the fixture had bailed on me late on the Friday afternoon.
I was having a rant to nobody in particular when my most shapely and appealing colleague pipes up "I've always fancied going to a proper football match, have you got a spare ticket now?"
"Indeed I have but you do realise I'm going to West Ham?  The visiting supporters' bit is crummy, the neighbourhood ain't special and the home supporters are mostly awful thugs on day release from Wormwood Scrubs.  With the best will in the world, even the Charlton supporters we'll be surrounded by have little to recommend them to a football (ahem) 'virgin'"
She reminded me she'd grown up in Eltham surrounded by Millwall's acolytes, so a few Hammers and Addicks presented few qualms.
The prospects for the afternoon just got better and better
Couple of liveners in the Hamilton Hall pre match, reminded me of the proximity of Brick Lane.  "Do you like Indian food?" "Certainly do, why?"  "Couple of streets that way are loads of curry restaurants, we can come back this way after the game, there's a terrific little boozer tucked away in Bangla Town and we can then go get some properly spicy food, whaddaya reckon?"

Vainglorious as it is to mention it here, twasn't just Jensen and Fortune who scored that day.  Me colleague's curiosity for football was satiated, happily her interest in me remained enthusiastic for a good couple of years.

Why was losing 5-0 at Blackpool and Charlton getting relegated one of your favourite Charlton away games?

Random game away to Southampton around 2007/08. I was sitting in the home fans with my dad , we had Semedo sent off after about 10 minutes i think and then spent the rest of the game pinned back. Somehow got to 90+ minutes at 0-0, then broke through Varney on the wing. With no support i though he was going to the corner to try to waste time when i see Chris Iwelumo charging through the middle trying to catch up. Varney suddenly pings it in, big chris buries the header! I jumped from my seat arms aloft, realise where I am and shout "useless bastards!" and walk out leaving my dad open mouthed on his own! Had to explain later to him I had no choice but to pretend I was annoyed!!

Also Portsmouth away in premier league when Di Canio came on and helped turn game around. Bartlett's header to win it - boom!

Lots of mentions for the Yeovil 1-1 in the rain, but spare a thought for the 3-2 on Boxing day 2011. Went 1-0 down to a Jonathan Obika bicycle kick, equalised twice including a Yann free kick, and then Danny Green finally scored his first Charlton goal in injury time for the win. Watford away on new years day whenever that was, also one of my favourite games ever.

Closely followed by Sheff W away midweek in the FA cup about 8 years ago, right before we got knocked out by the other Sheffield who at the time were the league below us. 

2 trips to Sheffield in a couple of weeks for me. Depressing.

We got moved to sit behind press seats, but that was ok, because we were able to get in players lounge somehow afterwards - we lasted about 15 mins in the players lounge before getting chucked out because of ‘unacceptable behaviour’ - in essence one of my Charlton mates throwing up all over the floor of the toilets, and me tipping half a pint of lager over my Norwich mates head

The 2nd of these for me... remember the other goal being an absolute screamer on the turn from 20 yards by Mark Kinsella.

So many great memories on this thread. 

Chelsea 88 was one of those weird games where I knew how important it was that we didn’t lose, but I had this inner confidence that we would be fine - well that’s how felt walking to Stamford Bridge - when I got there and saw the amount of people milling around and then walked onto the terrace and saw how many people were in the ground, I will admit feeling a tad nauseous !!!

That game is one of the most frightened I have been leaving a football ground, a lot of Chelsea fans were looking for trouble, and I wasn’t looking forward to the tube journey - luckily a Charlton mate of mine saw me in the crowd on the way out, we ducked out of the scrum of people and legged it to his car - on the way back, he made the mistake of going down the Old Kent Road, and there were Millwall everywhere as they had got promoted that day - luckily they didn’t notice the Charlton sticker on the rear window
