Tbf the negative feedback he gets on here is based on some heinous performances for Charlton, rather than his Welsh output.2

3 5 2 then when down to 10 men LCB in 4 4 1. Against Italy. And people on here think he can't play in L 1. I can't be sure but wasn't he described as "dog shite' , a scarf London technical term for inadequate.
Same with Fox and Sarr both now in higher division than Charlton.
I thought he was sound today. Against one of the best squads in the world, many of whom may actually play top level football.
After the sending off though, when he moved more into the middle, he marshalled that makeshift back line really well and grew in confidence, finishing the game as captain. A proud moment for him and for Charlton.5 -
Gunter isn't playing as a RB for Wales though, Indeed Wales like England seem to have an excess of RBs, seeing that Gunter was the left CB of the 3 and Nico Williams left wing back.
It shows how much Gunter is respected by the Welsh that he played CB ahead of an actual CB Tom Lockyer, who originally wasn't even in the squad.0 -

Gunter was interesting last year. In my opinion, he was outstanding for the first ten or so games when he played in that early run of consecutive victories, however as soon as he was moved to cover centre back, he never seemed to get the same form back. I do however have no issue with him being in our squad next year and think he is a reliable senior pro.3 -
Lockyer plays with a hot head, something that you can guarantee Gunter will not. Very important at Int level.

I’ll be honest and I’m a bit shocked and it scares me with how mad and crazy in love of everything and all things Charlton I usually am , I got a bit excited with him starting and nearly scoring but in all honesty felt fuck all compared to my usual buzz for a Charlton player and wanted him to lose badly .
I know I have a dislike of the Welsh in footballing terms but the real issue is that I didn’t feel that crazy mad pride I have done in the past , even as recent as Magennis or Iwelumo (I think he’d even left by the time he played for Scotland )
Probably because we are shit and in league one and at our worse footballing level ever , does that make me a glory boy .
Fcuk you Charlton 8 seasons of 13 in poxy league one with the scum and palace swanning around above and light years above us fffs

He was a good player in the Championship, an extremely experienced international and I think 99% of us were very happy when we signed him. And then he turned out to be a disappointment, cost us a number of goals and wasn't even trusted by his former manager to see out the season. I'm not sure what one more decent game for Wales means.
This is really classic CL stuff, isn't it... Does one decent game, or a goal, disprove everything bad ever said about a player? No, not really. And in this case it's actually the opposite, it just proves he should've done a lot better for us last season, as we all expected him to do.3 -
with Gunter, it doesn't feel like it's a Charlton player who's been called up to play for his country.
It's a Welsh international we've happened to sign (towards the end of his career)9 -

I thought he did well and of course, wouldn't it have been nice if his header crept in?0

He rose to the occasion v Italy and showed pride and dedication in his performance.
I suspect given he is playing at a lower level than previously, in empty stadiums for a team he has no affinity for he hasn't done that at Charlton very often and cost us loads of goals last season. I would happily save his wages and have him move on so we can bring in someone hungry and with a point to prove instead.1 -
He wasn’t very good for us last season.Matthews is a better player IMO.
His Wales career has been like a club career. He’s grown up with Ramsay Bale etc and puts his all in for the shirt.
Would I be bothered if he never played for us again? No. But good luck to him at the Euros.4 -
He is a better player than Matthews and his international record vouches for that as there is a direct comparison. I suspect he will be an asset for us next season. How many other League One clubs had players doing a decent job against one of the tournament favourites?1

He is and should be judged on what he does for us, not for Wales when he's surrounded by other good players. He should be our best defender and at times was our worst.
I'm far more proud to see our academy players make international squads with us or not, rather than random players we've signed.

Strange as Wales play in red as well and he managed to pass to his teammates.
The fact he looked bothered playing for Wales was a massive improvement.
I don't recall him doing a lot right in 20 or so games for us.
Yes, he was dog shite for us in games and tbh an international with over 100 caps would probably admit it and know he was.

Talk about desperate to reinforce a perceived perception.
It doesn't feel like....
It is not the same as Gomez etc...
To right . They weren't Charlton players at the time ! Talk about Bah Humbug .
Who would want to be a Charlton player given playing for and even captaining your team at the Euro Finals is not up to League one standard.
Gunter ok for International scene playing out of position but not L1!0 -

I honestly don't believe he was as bad for us as some people make out. I'm pleased he's doing well for his country and will be happy to see him back in a red shirt next season.8

Gunter wasn't playing RB yesterday. He's not in the Welsh team to bomb up and down the right hand side, or handle pacey wingers, as I don't think he's up to it any more - leaving aside defensive lapses, I was disappointed with his attacking play last season, with hardly any crosses or overlaps last season

He clearly means when playing for Charlton you odd man.4 -
A lot of Gunter's problems last season were down to the same reason a lot of our players struggled for 4 months. That's not to say he didn't have some games that were well below the level you, and probably he, would expect.
When he did get forward, Wimbledon at home springs to mind, he did look good but to often he was hamstrung by the ever changing formation and the total lack of any confidence in the center half pairing.
We have seen it at Liverpool last season, Man City the season before, Man United for years, we are seeing it with England now. If the players and/or manager doesn't trust the center halves everything else suffers.4 -

He wouldn’t have been helped by the constant changes by Bowyer, and League 1 football won’t be as possession based as international football, so you could say we weren’t set up to get the best out of him.
However Adkins dropped him for Matthews, it’s just unclear if that was based on ability, style, attitude or something else.1 -

Or it maybe another reason totally.2
