143-6 from 50-0. Should have opened with Jas!

Nor bad for a 2nd XI

I’ll be well chuffed if Sussex reach 160 here

I see Essex have bowled Derby’s out for 146

Derby’s last six championship innings have seen them bowled out for less than 150.

This is great to see from Jas and the rest! Go on the mighty Kent.
  • Of course, Kent are lucky they are not playing at Hove today; they would have a much tougher game…….against England’s Women.

The concern is that Singh, Houillon, Gordon and O'Riordon flag once it goes past their usual 50 overs in the innings. Mind you, it doesn't look like it will go much passed that...

Indeed. But at least some of the new guys will have played against Bickley Park and Ollie Robinson before...

Looks like I’ll be watching a 2nd XI game tomorrow. This is the new tactic from Sussex. You field the 1st team in the 2nds and the 2nds in the 1sts. Anyone there to see this bottom of the table clash?
Have a ticket but will take a rain check in the morning before deciding whether to go down. Forecast pretty poor

An incredible aspect of Jas's journey is that he didn't make his Kent age group debut 'til he was 16. To that point he lacked a bit of accuracy and also wasn't blessed with real pace. Then Kent went from picking line and length bowlers to taking on any player who had the raw materials - as Jas did given that he was 6' 2'' at that time. It wasn't long before he was playing Kent 2s.

One other thing about Jas. In 2017, when Jas was 14, he was pushed over at school and broke his wrist. Jas had to have two operations, one to put a plate in and another to correct something that wasn't right as a result of the first op. He missed the whole of that season but would turn up every week to score for the U14s. He did incredibly well to come back the following season and take 50 wickets.

Serendipity can be a great thing.

A COVID outbreak could be the springboard to his career.

I know another youngster who took a wicket with his 5th ball on his debut. The wicket of Darren Stevens (doubt he is still around these days, was quite an old fella back then )
He hasn’t done too badly for himself. Pity he plays for Essex though.

    Good luck going forward Jas.

Glass half full: we've avoided the follow-on and there's plenty of time left in the game to turn this around.

Glass half empty: bloody hell, our batting is poor regardless of who's playing.

Golfie: we're all going to die.

I was reminiscing yesterday with the Dad's of some of Seb's former age group team at Bexley  and we recalled the U13 County Cup Final against Broadstairs in 2016.

It was a T20 and we batted first. Seb opened - and was back in the pavilion almost immediately. His partner hung about. And hung about. And hung about not able to lay a bat on the ball 'til he was eventually run out (only way he was going to get out) in the 10th over - for 4!

Despite the fact that we lost relatively comfortably and only had 89 to defend,  we still managed to utilise 8 bowlers. Seb, as keeper, was one of the three that didnt bowl and his opening batting partner was another.

Us Dads still don't know what happened to that non bowling, opening batsman by the name of Jaskaran Singh!

Love that not only extras was the top scorer, but wides on their own!

When did Jas realise he could bowl then?

Jas could always bowl but I think we were trying to give everyone who hadn't done something in the game an opportunity to do so. He wasn't at that time so good that he was a "must" to come on to bowl and having soaked up 10 overs batting and with 9 bowlers in the side I think the feeling was that others deserved their opportunity. That final was in June and only really start to play adult cricket following that. And Jas was used as a bowler, as youngsters are in adult cricket, hence his progression that season in that discipline. He missed the following season with that broken wrist and only started to fulfil that potential in 2018.

Wonderful debut bowling performance by Jas Singh. Let's hope his skills as an opening batsman come into play too later given our position at the close of 69-5. We need every run we can scrape together.

He's a better bat now and has the ability (and levers) to make a hard hitting all rounder. His Dad was an all rounder too and played a few State games in India before coming to this country.

No play before lunch. Inspection at 1.00pm and looks like more rain may be on its way today. Will be at Polo Farm, Canterbury for the next 3 days so hoping for things to improve down there which the forecast suggest it will.

Nathan Gilchrisy has been pinged by Track and Trace and will be withdrawn from this match

Bradley Whiteman from TWells to replace him.
