'Clare, in the sack' would have been a better headline. But welcome Sean, very happy with this one.

Good signing for me this. Young, hungry, physical, dynamic. Our rivals wanted him. What's not to like.

Charlton Athletic are delighted to confirm the permanent signing of Sean Clare from Oxford United for an undisclosed fee.

The 24-year-old midfielder, who can also play right back, played a crucial role in Burton Albion’s excellent second half of the 2020/21 season, making an immediate impact, with the team winning six of his first seven starts during an outstanding loan spell.

Clare impressed Charlton scouts with his quality on the ball, his speed, dynamism and his ability to break up play.

He played in the Addicks academy as a youngster and has signed a two-year contract with Charlton on his return to the club.

After putting pen to paper at The Valley he explained he was pleased to be back at the club where it all began: "It's really exciting. I'm really happy to get it done. It is a club that I've had close to my heart for a very long time. To come back and have the chance to do what I dreamt of as a kid, to play in the first team, to be successful with a massive club like Charlton is something I'm really excited to do."

Clare becomes the fifth signing of the summer window, following the arrivals Jayden Stockley, Craig MacGillivray, George Dobson and Akin Famewo at The Valley and Manager Nigel Adkins said: “I'm pleased to welcome Sean back to Charlton Athletic, I'm looking forward to start working with him.”

Owner Thomas Sandgaard commented: “Part of our strategy is identifying talented young players, who are improving, and bringing them to Charlton. We were impressed with what we saw from Sean, so I am looking forward to seeing him at The Valley this season.”

Clare began his professional career at Sheffield Wednesday, where he spent time on loan at Bury, Accrington Stanley and Gillingham. He then moved to Hearts, where he played two years in the Scottish Premiership, scoring 12 goals in 71 games, before joining Oxford United last summer.

Young, mobile, played a lot of games - basically what we were promised. I like it!

    Happy with this.

Now that our right back slot is sorted hopefully we can sign a midfielder.

I know I was joking because Gobbo didn't think he was.

Welcome Sean! My lad knows a lot more about Sean than I do and was pleasantly surprised when I just told him we’d signed him. That’ll do for me. Looking forward to seeing him play.
  • Wish him all the best. Both Dobson and Clare went on loan to relegation battlers and unfashionable clubs last season and ended up with moves to a big club in league 1. Hopefully, he brings that attitude with him.

The kind of player that KR doesn't know how to get the best out of so he plays him at right back. Think he's going to be getting up and down the pitch for us A LOT. Exactly the kind of energy we need in the middle.

    We've signed Pratley on steroids?

Had two good years with Hearts 2018-20 with over 50 appearances, featured in the Scottish Cup Final 2019 as well.

Looks like Oxford signed him last summer and then had no idea how to use him.

    The tsunami of signings begin!

Don’t know much about him myself, have to be honest, but if others are happy then I’ll go along with that.

    Welcome aboard/back Sean!

Whats on the side of his face? - Is that a bruise or a birth mark of some kind?

Two year deal worries me slightly. We go up and he does well in the Championship and we could lose him for nothing. Unless of course we don't think him good enough for the Championship? I was hoping for some three year deals to stop our squad churn every summer.

I've thought about that too ..... whether we are promoted or not, I guess if we are impressed with him, we'll extend his deal/offer a new improved contract.

Haven't even heard of him! So cant really comment.

Which means I wont rubbish him, nor declare him a Hollands equivalent signing for our midfield.

I assume he fits the bill of one of the best midfielders in league 1 going on some of the reactions here.

I am so out of touch with league 1 football - think I will have to get used to not knowing much about our players until I see them in our shirt.

Good to have another signing and a fee paid which goes against what some have been saying

I'd never heard of him until this morning but proven at this level, young and has pissed off Tarbuck so all good.

One down, eight to go (but not today)
