According to @Airman Brown there was something in the pipeline but for/if we reach the Championship. He said on here last week - can't remember everything he posted but basically nothing to wet your knickers over and not the "multi-million" pound deal that everyone thought it might be.Vfrf said:
I could be wrong but didn't they say a multi-million pound deal at the end of last year?Cafc43v3r said:

Clearly likes the easy life, and didn't fancy his own chances of shinning in L1, let alone anyone else having a serious gamble on him, big(ish) fish small pond mentality.Braziliance said:Not that I am fussed because obviously we weren't in for him but I think it says a lot about him that he didn't stay with Cambridge for their league 1 fight and dropped 1/2 leagues you could say for the money.0 -
He is 26. We were not interested in him. If we had been I am fairly sure we would have got him.Oggy Red said:
Possibly at 28 years old the most lucrative contract he's ever likely to be offered ?LargeAddick said:

He’s dropped down 2 leagues though , as Cambridge were promoted to L1. They certainly wanted him to stayScoham said:Quite funny reading some of the views from our fans on Mullin on #cafc Twitter and replies to Cawley. He’s being criticised for lacking ambition despite probably having no serious interest in him from L1 clubs.
It’s also amazing how highly some appear to rate him when they likely never saw him play. Some are shocked by the move, they were either going to be excited had he signed for us or devastated if he signed for a rival. Instead he’s dropped down a league and completely confused them.0 -
Maatsen is off to Coventry. Back to the drawing board for Gallen and Roody.

Not a massive fan of Maatsen, definitely more suited to the championship. Good luck to him.WhenIwasLittleBoy said:Maatsen is off to Coventry. Back to the drawing board for Gallen and Roody.

He'd said a while ago that he wanted to go back North, nearer home, friends and family.
And at 28 years old, he's no doubt been offered the longest most lucrative contract of his career.
At his age, his Prem club ambitions have long been forgotten. If he's going to get kicked and battered as a striker, he may as well get handsomely paid for doing so.
To a lot of people, including older footballers, naked ambition comes second to security for their family.

Didn’t improve. Worse if anything by the time he left us. Big disappointment.Oggy Red said:

Maatsen had a higher ceiling. Purrington had a slightly higher floor.nelsonsleftfoot said:

In League one, you want a good floor.

Oh, alright ..... you win: young teenaged inexperienced footballer learning his trade as he plays was a big disappointment.nelsonsleftfoot said:

Purrington has different attributes and limitations.
But .... you know, if I had to guess who was going to eventually play at a higher level and achieve more in the game ..... well, it probably wouldn't be dear old Ben.

I love people talking about lack of ambition in someone they have never met.
This time last year the only deal he could get was a one year deal at Cambridge, in league 2. Despite his record breaking season at Morecambe that took 3 years. He probably wasn't even on a grand a week.
Now he has signed a 3 year deal, in a part of the country he wants to live. On more money than he could have dreamed about this time last year. He can probably now buy a house, something I doubt he could do before and provide some sort of security to his family, if he has one.
It's not like he has given up a crack at the world cup and champions league is. He will know how good he is, or isn't. Unless he was going to get a first team gig at one of the bigger league 1 clubs, which he wasn't, it's probably the best move he could have got, for him.
Good luck to him. To those questioning his ambition how financially secure were you at 26?18 -
It's a deal that doesn't start until 2022 and because of that can't be announced until then or thereabouts. The value mooted will be attached to higher status than L1 over the life of the deal and therefore is dependent on what divisions we are in during it. It's the kind of deal the club has done many times before, although it may be structured differently.golfaddick said:

No disrespect intended to @swisdom but the club tried hard to get a bigger company as sponsor and was unable to do so because the value in media exposure isn't there in L1. The previous sponsors have stepped in to the breach again, so well done to them.
To give it some context, the gate receipts for the Sheffield Wednesday game (excluding season tickets) will be way more than the value of this deal. That isn't a slight on anyone, it's just where we are.21 -
You mean the club want to announce it themselves? Blimmin' cheek!Covered_End_Lad said:I have asked for more info but only been told another is done, no idea if perm or loan.

Agreed, often in bottom end of league 1 through to Conference players are on less than a grand a week. For a career that lasts only 10-15 years you have to make your money when you can.Cafc43v3r said:I love people talking about lack of ambition in someone they have never met.

Come back the Mercury all is forgiven...
Easy back then, pickup your local newspaper and there's John Bumstead and Steve Gatting plastered all over the back page sporting section.
Times were much simpler.
