Mark Cavendish

In the Giro which means no TdF probably.

Pity as this might be his last year to win stages on the TdF.

Probably was last chance but he was never going to get the TdF place this year … great pity but could well do something at the Giro.
  • Shame that hesitation on the Champs-Elysees looks like it'll be a what if moment for him.
  • Shame as I think he could have won a couple of stages at the Tour de F.

As do I … but he was never going to be picked unfortunately
  • I thought this was going to be a thread about him taking pictures of people at an underground station.

I’m not so sure. He might just do the first week of the Giro. If they don’t put him in the TDF quickstep and other sponsors are losing the chance of having a pic of him crossing the line breaking Eddy Merckx record with their logo emblazoned across his chest. If I was a sponsor I would want that opportunity.
Manager seems to prefer Jakobsen and I can’t see them both going … hopefully I’m wrong.

So it seems, but he might find some pressure on his shoulders come July, I certainly hope so. If Cav does all three weeks of the Giro then no chance of TDF
  • What we need is for Jakobsen to have a minor niggle that keeps him out of the Tour (always assuming that the penalty of doing both is less for a sprinter than a GC hopeful).

    Nothing lasting, but just enough.
  • "I’ve prepared for this race and I hadn’t prepared for the Tour last year, so I feel quite relaxed," he said when asked to compare his return to the Giro to his hugely successful return to Grand Tour racing at last year’s Tour de France, where he won four stages and the green points jersey.

"I think I’m in pretty similar form to last year. I had good build-up and I’m pretty happy with where I’m at."

"We’ve got a good team, we’re on form," Cavendish said. "I love riding with Morky (Michael Mørkøv), but it’s not just Morky. We’ve got an incredibly strong team here, with Bert [Van Lerberghe], Ballero (Davide Ballerini), Mauro Schmid, Mauri Vansevenant and Knoxy (James Knox). They’re brilliant guys to ride around Italy with, both on the bike and at the dinner table. I’m very happy with this line-up.

"It’s nice to have people you trust. It’s not just Michael, it’s the guys ahead of him, too. It makes his job easier when he has guys he can follow. That’s the biggest factor for my confidence for the Giro. I know I have guys ahead of me that I can trust."

It’ll be interesting to see how they get on without him.

They’ll forgo all the publicity that his attempt on the record would have garnered. Potentially that could have been massive for their sponsors/owners. If I was the owner or sponsor I’d probably take a chance on him.
  • Great win today especially considering all he has been through since the tour. Thought he had gone too early, but looked strong all the way to the line
  • Brilliant win.
Wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up going to the Tour. Massive story if he does.
  • It’s certainly a way to build up form in the first week or two of the Giro then drop out. He looked really strong today, from the second he hit the wind seemed to know he would get the win
  •  I can still see Cav at Le Tour. Patrick Lefevere (Quick-step DS) can be very eccentric when it comes to team selection, he has form for changing his mind at the drop of a hat, I certainly wouldn't rule it out.

As for today, masterful, him and Michael Morkov are a joy to watch in sprint stages, one of the best combo's ever and Cav is arguably the greatest sprinter to have ever done it.
  • Being the last leadout (too fat and old to win a bunch sprint 🤣), I can tell you now that Morkov would have thought 'he's gone too early' when he came round him - but fuck me, to hold that from that distance out in a straight line sprint is immense. Slightly fortunate that Ewan was well out of position, as I think he's got the edge on him in a straight line finish, but the strength to hold that right to and through the line is huge.

He still won't go to the tour unless Jakobsen gets injured, mind
  • Still not convinced about that. There’s little between them in terms of speed, but I know which one will generate front pages for the sponsors. Patrick Lefevere would also be aware that it’s a chance to enhance his place in the history of the sport.
  • I honestly think Quick Step would be mad not to take Cav to the tour. He doesn’t need to compete for the green jersey he just needs one opportunity to make history and take a record that could stand for some time

Unsurprisingly sounds disappointing about not going to the Tour de France this year, after winning a second British Road Championship today.

Says the reason he's not going to the Tour is because of his bad form (pointed at the win today as an example) - Feels he's in even better condition this year, than when he went to the Tour last year.

Its certainly unfortunate for him if he doesnt go... I only want one more win from him
  • Going to be one last hurrah @ the Tour for Mark it seems, looks like he'll be retiring at the end of the season.

Wonder if he'll change his mind if he doesnt win a Stage.

He is not pulling up trees in the Giro so I reckon he will stick to his plan

Saving his energy- he's going to do it!
  • He’s improved during the Gíro. Just needs a bit of luck in the Tour. Cross wind stage might be his best bet.

We just need to see this in France now, one last time - What a man Geraint Thomas is to help as well

What a ride by Geraint Thomas to get Cav in position.  Absolutely brilliant.  What we'd all do to see Cav get one more damn win in the TdF.
There is another clip I've seen of Thomas as he takes the front of the peleton and gives a nod to Sanchez behind to get on to his back wheel - I wont be surprised to see similar at the Tour
  • Brilliant to see Cavendish win, but please explain to a cycling novice- will Geraint be under a cloud/sanctioned by Ineos for helping a rider from another team?  (perhaps he could done more for his Ineos team mates?)
Also did that lose Geraint the pink jersey?

Nope... "deals" being done in the Peleton is a normal thing

Some teams will focus on the GC (Pink Jersey), and wont bother taking a specialist Sprinter like Cavendish to a Tour in the first place, so its possible Ineos didnt stand a chance in the Sprint anyway.

Might even see Astana scratching their back as a result in the Tour de France now.

Geraint lost the Pink Jersey the day before in the Time Trial - Its all but impossible to win time back on a Flat Stage, as you see, the majority of them end in the whole field being bunched up.
  • Brilliant win.
Can now see him picking up a win at the Tour, although the opposition will be stronger. Jackobsen is probably the number one sprinter right now isn't he?

    Probably, but eminently beatable
