On paper 2 years ago was stronger. I think the opposite, that second XI looks weak. Ness and Claydon out of position, Leaburn young and Gilbey, Morgan, Davison and DJ not particularly good.BR7_addick said:

Not sure about that. How many of those players in the second XI would you be happy with playing 25+ games. Aneke is the only proven decent playerBR7_addick said:
You’re not gonna like this if you’re one of the negative Norris’ but the fact that the latter is our second XI shows we are stronger than we have been for a good few years, could we even fill a second XI in the last five years or so.Scoham said:Looks like 4-3-3. As has been said before the biggest question is how the three CMs set up. I’d be surprised if the others line up differently.
Wollacott
Clare Inniss O’Connell Sessegnon
Dobson
JFC Fraser
CBT Kirk
Stockley
Second half if we sub on entire team
CM
Ness Lavelle Elerewe Clayden
Gilbey Morgan
Davison Aneke DJ
Leaburn
When did we last have a stronger second XI, in league one?1 -
How many goals did Stockley get last season, refresh my memory please, and the three months he was out doesn't count.golfaddick said:

He wont. Stockley needs the ball in the air. You don't see Liverpool & Man City playing with 6ft 4 strikers.ozaddick said:I know it's only 10 minutes in, but I've seen a bit of our pre season games and I just can't see how Stockley will suit garner ball.
Bringing Garner in should have meant Stockley leaving. Sad but necessary.

Sessegnon has looked good8

It’s our second XI, as I said we’ve barely been able to make one in recent times. And Gilbey, Morgan and DJ whatever you think of them are decent for a reserve XI.cafcfan1990 said:

I don’t know but whatever it was he’d have been required to hold up the ball despite not being a technical player.CL_Phantom said:
What style of football did they play/ want to play?Scoham said:
I think it’s too early to be so certain. We play in a league in which Hull were promoted with Magennis as a lone striker. You don’t need every player to be a perfect fit for every role.FAVADDICK said:
Listen I aint writing anyone off but can you honestly say we have the players to play this formation, stockly looks like a lost puppy running around so does dobsonScoham said:
Or we could give them time to adapt for the style and grow into the game before writing them off?FAVADDICK said:For the 4th game of preseason were looking very poor, generally can't see this formation/ style of play lasting long as we just haven't got the players to play it properly0 -

Interesting that JFC has been told he can listen to offers, but Garner clearly sees him as ahead of Morgan and Gilbey even with McGrandles injured.ForeverAddickted said:

Depends on injuries really. All well and good saying it’s a reserve XI but it’s a long old season. Need a core group of about 14/15 at least, and I’m not sure we’ve got that yet.BR7_addick said:

Shocking piece of play between Stockley and Kirk that resulted in a lovely save from the Goalkeeper
Terrible play from Stockley with his feet2 -
He’s about the only one, nothing to get excited about so far, I know it’s all about “minutes” but overall a disappointing first half from a pattern of play and creating chances point of view.JoshAddick said:Sessegnon has looked good1 -
We’ve done the Stockley minutes per goal ratios and records ten times on the rumours thread, at this level he’s a goalscorer, you might not like his style of play and that’s perfectly fine, but I repeat he’s a goalscorer at this level, get over it.5

From 33 games in league one, is that nearly but not quite a goal every other game ?golfaddick said:

Great chip from Kirk from an equally good pass from Stockley, tipped over for a corner2
-
Good move, Stockley drops deep, turns and picks out Kirk who has a decent effort saved.
Not giving up on him becoming Jann Stocklogant just yet.6 -

I completely understand this XI were announced to start this game because they didn’t start the last one. And that’s not my point at all. My point is that this XI is clearly, if you look at the players, Garners preferred starting line up.In pre-season when you want you players to gain understanding of playing with each other, especially when introducing a new system, if JFC was going to be gone, surely you would prefer to have another player who will be there gaining that understanding with the players who will play the most.0 -

I'm not sure what you're referencing when you mentioned cherry picking. I compare strikers against their peers in the League. Not against non League clubs in the cup oflr U23's in the Pizza trophy.ForeverAddickted said:

Forster-Caskey looks very out of place, and unsure of what he needs to be doing.
lots of space in the middle, Dobson not seemingly continuing with his CDM role as much as he used to with Fraser covering there at times.
kirk looks good but not getting much service, home and sessegnon could work well together.
id be keep to see Leaburn up top with stockley second half, replacing JFC1 -

Positionally he's wandered into the centre too much, leaving us really vulnerable down his side. Much prefers his right foot too3 -
So HT 0-0, now for the half time "chat" from BG, and on comes the second half "team" and the win we all know is on the cards...

This style of football is not exactly making me look forward to the season. Their first instinct seems to be to pass back, even when we get a free kick. The build up is so slow and then a lump forward. Feels like a lot like last season to me.3
-
Yes. Despite our best CL protestations, he ISN'T a left back but a right back or centre back who can play on the left.killerandflash said:

CAFC appear to hate left backs who naturally play left back.1 -
Too hot.
We look ordinary and no one is busting a gut in this heat.3 -
Few players seemingly wandering around postions, we´ve had Dobson, JFC, Fraser, Sessegnon and even Stockley end up in the CDM spot, few balls up to Stockley to hold up or flick on, hasnt really been anyone around him (when hes been up there to receive it)
Sutton seem to be treating it more serious, have sussed out that CB´s splitting either side the gk at goal kicks means its likely to be a short ball out.
SOme nice passing but none too many incisive or threatening, havent really got going much tbh.0 -
The centre backs have been solid, but not great how busy they've had to be. Very weak defensively down both flanks.
And whisper, it without Morgan and Gilbey our midfield has looked a bit static1
