The most boring football to watch other than friendly matches in hot weather must be the African Nations. The tempo of the games are so slow and after my 3rd 0-0 I gave up. Some class players but it's such a shocking spectacle.
My first football I ever watched live was in Africa and I genuinely want Joe Aribo and Ademola Lookman who has started getting picked for their parent's country to do well.

I thought that was pretty disappointing actually.
The passing from the back degenerated into a lot of hoofing forward, our football was much more like last season's.
We looked vulnerable down the flanks. Sessegnon constantly wandered infield, leaving masses of space down our left, while in attack having two right footed players on the left, both wanting to cut inside onto their right foot doesn't work. It's a repeat of the Kirk and Gunter combo at the start of last season, Kirk needs a left footer on the outside of him. Clayden isn't good enough, but at least provided a left footer option.
I thought our midfield 3 looked really pedestrian as a combination. I'm no Gilbey fan, but he had an impressive cameo, with a couple of decent breaks from midfield.
The centre backs were very good. Keep Innis fit and we look very solid there.4 -

What worries me is the lack of attacking options. We need more of a threat up top, mind you it was boiling watching it can’t imagine what it must have been to play in.

Not read all the comments, but that’s the first game I’ve been to since Ipswich. New manager, new players, new playing style ? It didn’t look any better to me … playing out from the back with these players is madness and ultimately ends up with a hoof anyway after it’s gone across the back a couple of times. Keeper not confident with the ball at his feet. We are promised attacking football ? I must have missed that !7

The first 5 minutes of the Albie experiment as backup defensive mid - a “risky pass in the defensive third” followed by him not tracking back and his man slipping behind him to get a shot off that wollacot saved. Please Gallen - don’t sell jfc. We have no cover if Dobson is injured2

We're obviously nowhere near yet, but there are very occasional little passages of play or movement that hint at something better. I think today was the first time I've ever seen a Charlton side creatively bypass a high press. It only happened once, but I'm hoping to see more of that. It'll be interesting to see which players really suit this style.5

Can Steven Sessegnon overlap on the left in an attacking position ? If the answer is No then no point in playing Charlie Kirk as he will just turn in on his favoured right foot which any coach can inform his players to stop.
CBT has to get the gig on the left unless we are getting the attacking LB with some pace to get up and down and cross the ball from an advanced player with his Left foot.
No comment on today as didn't watch and just read this thread but the number 3 position has been an ongoing issue for a year and needs to be addressed.4 -

Let’s see how things pan out over the first 6 games of the season. We’re not done with recruitment.
There were some brighter moments through the second half where we upped the tempo and cut through their press.
We’ll be able to do it with more regularity the more they play together and the cooler the temperatures. It was clear watching the stream that we could play more quickly when we wanted to do so.5 -
I am not a fan of the owner declaring how he wants us to play before a manager is brought in. Then the manager has to work with last seasons players to a large extent. It was the mistake under Adkins that we had a set way of playing and not the players to play it and because he had signed up to it he couldn't change it. I feel at our level and with our budget, you look at who you have got, who you can bring in and what system would best suit them.
Yesterday was indeed a good friendly to have, playing against a decent well organised team from the division below. It was hot and a friendly which mitigates, but it felt we hadn't got to grips with the system and it neither created lots of opportunities for us or made us safer from a counter attack. Very similar to last season. A lot of work is needed, and I think a competitive team could be fashioned from what we have, but I fear we are going down a narrow path which won't allow us to find it. And if we do start in a similar way to last season, will Garner be able to change formation out of pragmatism? These are questions brewing in my head.
But hey ho, maybe I'm wrong. I have been before. I don't believe TS is dodgy and he could be a good owner for us. I just have this feeling that I have had for a while and I can't shake off that he knows F all about football but doesn't realise it.16 -
Muttley you are spot on, also there were one or two times yesterday when the BG system almost worked, let's hope that in the next few weeks we get some more players who can play this system, ship out the ones that can't and that some of our current ones can adapt.1

My optimism has been tempered a bit now because I wanted to see a proven striker brought in and integrated ready to start against Accrington, which seems unlikely to happen in time, if at all, now.
Not having 2 of the 5 new signings ready to start isn't great either, but it seems our injury curse endures above all else. Still, the sun's out and the birds are singing. Hey Ho!2
