Charlton Athletic are delighted to announce the loan signing of forward Chem Campbell from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The 20-year-old playmaker, who can operate in any position across the forward line, joins for the remainder of the 2023/24 campaign.

Campbell has six Premier League appearances to his name - five of which came during the 2022/23 season - and impressed on loan at fellow League One side Wycombe Wanderers in the latter half of the campaign.

After completing his move to Charlton, he said: “I would say the style of play is my style of football - attacking and getting at players. I just want to impress and help the team.

“I look to attack one-v-one and try and score goals and get assists, which I see as my job. As long as I can bring that I think the fans will be happy. It’s a new challenge and I want to take it and push on.”

Manager Dean Holden commented: “Chem is an exciting young attacker, who can play across the forward line. He has plenty of pace and the ability to beat a player and made good progress last season playing games in the Premier League for Wolves, along with a positive loan at Wycombe Wanderers. He is a good finisher who can create and score goals. He will add a lot of quality to our front line.”

Campbell becomes the Addicks’ seventh signing of the summer. Technical Director Andy Scott added: “He is a player I have seen a lot of recently and going back a number of years. I remember seeing him for Wolves in a game against PSG (Paris Saint-Germain) and was really impressed with him, so I’ve kept an eye on him. He is direct, he has got good physicality and good ball carrying skills. He is an attacking threat that can assist, create and score goals.

“He is another young, ambitious player, who has had a number of clubs after him but after speaking to Dean and understanding where he was going to be playing, how we play, the chances we create and the opportunities he will get, he was very keen to come.”

The Midlands-born forward had spells with West Bromwich Albion and Birmingham City, where he played alongside Jude Bellingham, as a youth player before joining Wolves at the age of 13.

In October 2019, the then-16-year-old made his professional debut in a last-16 Carabao Cup tie at Aston Villa, becoming Wolves’ second-youngest competitive starter.

Campbell continued to star for Wolves’ academy sides thereafter and, in April 2022, earned his Premier League bow against Newcastle United at St. James’ Park.

After impressing during pre-season, he earned a permanent place in Wolves’ first-team squad for the 2022/23 season and was subsequently rewarded with a new four-year contract in October 2022.

The former Wales youth international joined Wycombe on loan in January 2023 and made 17 league appearances for the Chairboys, scoring three goals.

Remember thinking he was quite a handful in the home game against Wycombe last season so should add some quality to the striker options.

When opposition players stand out, it’s a decent sign.

If he’s to back up Tyreece and CBT, fair enough
if he’s instead of Nombe, not so good

“When we’re looking to place our players, we want them to go somewhere they can challenge for a place. Chem can play across the front, both wide positions and as a ten, so his versatility will help them. He likes to come off the left, but he’s done well on the right and made his debut there, and he’s a good ten, picking up good positions.

“We had a bit of interest, some clubs who have had better starts than Charlton, but we know it’s a big club, and we want Chem to be a big part of the challenge we’re expecting them to mount.”

Bold claim but he has the potential to be better than all three of them.

Hopefully this is more of a JRS signing rather than another Nile John/Matt Smith

Sounds promising and can cover a few positions so a good addition on paper.

Will wait to see how he does on the pitch but welcome and good luck.

His flexibility means there is still space for others to come in as well as those coming back from injury.
  • Let’s give him a decent chance.
I hadn’t heard of JRS or Cullen or Gallagher or Bielik.
I had heard of Watson, Arter, Kilkenny…

Gandhi, really, who’d have thought it!
  • Well - let’s wait and see - not (in my view) the ‘brave new world’ as yet ……

Anyway - welcome - show us what you can do
