Saw Arthur Smith recently at a comedy night in Covent Garden.
There were bits where it was almost embarrassing for me because the room was full of people who weren't native to Britain let alone South East London (Smith went to John Roan and I actually thought he was dead but I must have got him confused with someone else on Grumpy Old Men, John Peel maybe...), and I was sitting next to my wife, from Newport in Wales.
Put it this way, the jokes he was telling were landing massively with me and not so well with the rest of the crowd. I was in bits.

Nish Kumar is a odd one, I'd describe him as consistently inconsistent. He maybe suffers from over exposure early on when he was probably still learning his craft. He is a comedian no doubt about that but he, like a lot of comedians at the moment has gone into the trapdoor of using extreme hyperbole to rip Conservative politicians apart and make his whole schtick originally all fuck the tories knowing it will get a massive response from everyone else who hates the current government which is pretty much everyone. All politicians are there to be shot at and they give loads of easy material, they are socially inept a lot of the time, they dress weirdly and stand weirdly and the way they speak makes me laugh and I totally understand going after the bunch of shitehawks in government, some balance would be welcome. Kier Starmers voice and rosy red cheeks are a start, his total lack of anything resembling conviction or policy could be another, Angela Rayner and Jess Phillips are a goldmine to take the piss out of as well
Dunno, I think something with good comedians is being able to pull a rabbit or two out of a hat when they are up against it a bit and I dont think Nish has that0 -

Personally while I've not nothing against the current crop of stand ups, I do feel that stand ups have crowded out other forms of comedy on TV, like sketch and character comedy. I enjoy panel shows full of stand ups, but they are cheap TV.
Where are the modern equivalent of Monty Python, Not the Nine O'clock News, Smith and Jones, Fry and Laurie, Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse, Goodness Gracious Me, Armstrong and Miller, Mitchell and Webb etc on TV?2 -
Feeling smug as 3 of 5 comedians I rate have not been mentioned as worst, therefore they must be the best.
Not saying who they are.
One that was mentioned before was Sean Lock- I found him amusing, witty, and was capable of of surreal type of humour which I enjoyed. Usually very good on 8/10 cats. (RIP)
The other was Billy Connelly, and he was brilliant. Frankly undeniable
My only conclusion is supporting CAFC/CL is bad if you want to preserve your sense of humour.1 -

Sean Lock and my own GOAT Billy Connolly are great shouts. Sean Lock on the show he did with Jimmy Carr talking about winning rectum of the year still makes me laugh now. What I like most about Billy is the way he tells stories using perfect visual imagery and the noises and expressions2

I always liked to listen to the comedy on Radio 4 at 6.30, but all the modern stuff has been total rubbish for some time. There are loads, loads of really good stand ups on the comedy circuit and its a totally different experience to seeing comedy on the TV, it feels a lot more dynamic too and in these times where saying whats perceived by the rabid righteous gang to be the wrong thing, it feels a bit dangerous too1

Lee Mack is one of the better of todays comedians,his original series of not going out,were very good,but a bit stale of late.Blackheathen said:

Yeah, Not Going Out was funny when he was trying to get the girl. Feel it lost its sense of direction once they became an item.thickandthin63 said:

That would explain a lot! I remember when I was at uni she would appear on things like Mock the Week, so I assumed she was a bad comedian.Covered End said:

Most of my exposure to stand ups and things currently is through panel shows like Taskmaster and Fighting Talk. Couldn't stand Judi Love on Taskmaster.0 -

Don't understand the love-in for Billy Connolly. I don't know if he's funny or not because I could never understand a single word he said. Met him once. He and his motorbike were outside a pub on the Isle of Arran. I just kind of grunted as I went in and he nodded a greeting back, I couldn't face the embarrassment of being part of a conversation I had no hope of comprehending.0
