Throw back, the defence plays the ball around the back in an arc, playing safe. It's so predictable and ponderous and meanwhile the opposition get organised and put pressure on our players and mark us out of any possibility to make incisive moves towards goal. With the level of players we've got it's a lazy and gutless way of playing.
One of the only passages of play you can't be offside from. Any throw-on inside the opposition half should be down the line to a winger or striker. It drags the opposition back towards their goal.
Schoolboy stuff.0 -
Karel Fraeye was losing to clubs that were bound for the Premier League. We've just lost to Burton Albion.20

"Hi can you help with a rotten apple that needs replacing?"
Mind you Tennai Watson was partially at fault for the first getting caught upfield as he does every game, exposing the centre halves (and yes Jones then invited the player inside to score).
Then for the 2nd Ness's clearance managed to go about 5 yards, when it should have gone 20 yards. The ball came back to Tennai Watson who kindly chested it down for Burton to score the 2nd, instead of volleying it anywhere out of the penalty area.
Our defenders were absolute rank (apart from Thomas who was good) and I can't work out why they make the same mistakes in and out of possession every game.
Is it mainly down to the players or is the coach equally at fault?
The defending was just as poor under Holden.
NB Scott brought in T Watson, Jones & Edun & none are good enough and Ness whilst starting deterioated.
The only chink was the new players looked ok, apart from Fiorini.

You are the worst manager that I have seen in 55 years supporting this club.
Just do the honorable thing and go!Neither manager was any good, in fact both of them are absolute shite.
But Appleton is pretending to manage in League 1, whereas Karel Fraeye was managing in the Championship. They are both useless. But Appleton, by virtue that he cannot manage in League One is the worst.3 -
MuttleyCAFC said:If I see T Watson and Ness starting on Tuesday and we don't win, I will join the Appleton out camp. I am teetering one way and then the other. What puts me off is the concern we will just get another manager from the same pond.1

I absolutely accept it's subjective but i think MA is the worst manager we have ever had. Yes worse than Fraye, Dowie or Slade.. just my opinion of course.2

golfaddick said:I suggest if you want to stop conceding you try playing with more defenders.
4 4 fucking 2.
All 352 does is trap your "wingbacks" further up field.7 -
Lost for words after that...
Deserved better based on first half, but overall CRAP AGAIN...
So, I thought I'd pop something up to remind us of better times...and much much better players and Management...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bS6vPHDjWQ
Roll on Tuesday, can't wait!!4 -
Defending starts with a good reliable GK, AMB is not much better than an average pub side keeper. Has zero comms with the back 3/4.Slow and indecisive distribution. Flat footed and poor positioning in normal play.. Doesn’t come take crosses.Sort that out first and foremost.Appleton looks way out of his depth. Can’t see a way forward for him.Lose Tuesday and I think he is going Wednesday. Also the atmosphere will be toxic if we concede early on or ship a late goal to lose.1

We had more shots, corners and possession than Burton and should have made a lot more out of those bare statistics, BUT as we all know (all together now) it' goals that count
3 5 2 does not suit us, I am sick n tired of saying this. Appleton wants us to play like a premier team with L1 players, he should either get with reality or face the sack .. equally as said, we have a lot of newcomers and it will take a while for the clichéd bedding in. The thing is though we don't have the time, so need the new boys up and at it a s a p, preferably from tomorrow
I am no more downcast than I was before this game, we are a badly managed side with decent players, Appleton seems to lack the ability to motivate and organise his players and his record down the years mostly supports my opinion
Two tough games coming up and IF we don't get points from both of those, then Appleton should be replaced. We don't know who 'selected' the new players, whoever it was has potentially done a good job. IF it was Appleton he deserves two those more games to get his choices sorted and to get results, else Michael get the fuck away elsewhere, a long way away.
I'll say again, forget wing backs, three at the back and all the fancy old bollocks. I don't care if every other team/manager in the universe (except Vincent Kompany) has ditched 4 4 2, we need to get real, play a 4 4 2 and start earning some points. I m o we now have a squad to do it, IF IF Appleton plays to its potential and ditches the fancy stuff, gets his players to get stuck in and not baffle them with fancy and unworkable tactics
I agree Appleton should be given more time as these are clearly the players he wants and needs a few weeks on the training pitch to get them to gel together. Thats why you need to do your squad building in the summer. Look at my posts last June about this.
Dont get me wrong, I want him gone yesterday. I didnt want him in the first place. But if you are going to bring in his players (2 of the signings he has coached before) then you have to give him time.
If he was to go my support would be for one of :
Duff
Jones
Rowett
Pearson
The main thing though, is DITCH 3 4 3 or it's fancy variations, play 4 at the back, defend like Spartans and graft out some results .. will the loanees and new signings be up for a right fight though ? .. as ever, we will soon find out

The optimism on page 1 of the match thread was off the scale.
What happened to Bakinson as the game wore on? Seemed to either fade badly, or Burton changed shape?1 -

But on today's evidence neither does 352.1 -
Appleton has been clueless from day 1.
We need a manager who will motivate - formations mean jack shite if players can't be arsed.6 -

My issue with Appleton is that he talks some sense in terms of identifying issues but then I don't see the talk manifest itself on the pitch. I understand he highlighted the passing backwards and sidewards being an issue today. Well the first three players that applies to are Watson, Ness and Jones. Thomas was making good offensive passes and he subbed him. Gillesphey looked like he can pass. On Tuesday he needs to act on what is plain to see. not just see it and say it. Asiimwe is young and can make errors but he plays without fear from what I have seen. I can't see how we would not be better with him playing instead of powder puff T Watson.5

Very sad to see us in a situation where we are now fighting relegation in league 1.0 -

Most telling thing was when the ref was being subbed, my son phoned (who was watching stream) and said MA was still standing still with hands in pocket and not taking the opportunity to get the team together. Bloke clearly has run out of ideas / lost the dressing room. Hope he’s gone by Tuesday and if he’s still there when I get to Bloomfield Road I might just stay in the pub15

Bumped into Phil Warman on Thursday in Gravesend town centre. Asked if he fancied doing a job till the end of the season. His reply was no thank you.5

It wasn't the formation's fault we let in 2 stupid goals.1 -

On the train on my way home. Was encouraged by the first half. We were tidy without showing a lot of quality. Poor goal to concede. I think it was Burtons first shot of the match! Second half was a different story and has left me feeling very depressed. I honestly don't see where the next win will come from. We lost every battle all over the pitch and didn't create a thing until Kanu came on. There was absolutely no movement and our wing backs are not wing backs. Not once did they get free and the crosses were always behind the strikers. Too many players looked very poor in that second half which is one of the worst I have seen. And I have seen some bad ones! Really hope we can grind out a result on Tuesday or else we are in big trouble.6

I don't want him in charge on Tuesday a win with him just keeps him in place.
We can go down but change now and there's a chance of getting our if it.
He's lost the dressing room, lost us and the Board need to show some balls and get rid.
Toxic will not be the word on Tuesday if he's still here....Northampton have won 7 out of the last 11 so it's hardly a walk over...1 -

Makes no difference who we sign with this clown in charge.
Get rid now and give the new bloke a chance to see what's needed in the summer
What you are asking for here, according to Einstein, is madness.
The second things go wrong in toxicvalleyworld is a cry to sack the manager. Appleton has proven he can bring success at this level. He isn't the problem.12 -
